Yep. They turned off the geoblocking a few hours before it was due to launch and then blocked it again about 30-45mins before the launch time.

Yeah so those of us who have it will just have to do the same this time.

If the WWE really want to stop it they can do it very easily by blocking all payments made from non US credit cards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,198 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

I doubt it'll be as simple as turning off the geo blocking ? Surely they have that angle covered

I think it will be as that's the only thing stopping us from accessing it. It comes up wwe blackout when I've tried to access it with the us unblock and that will have to be changed before the 19th so.

Just as simple US paypal accounts only.

Even if you set up a US Paypal account you will only be able to top it up with a US card.

So basiclly if i sign up now ....and then use us unblock , I'll be able to use it without UsUnblock from the 19th just seems too easy lol

Is the presumption that we will or won't get PPVs?

I've no problem sticking with the US account and Unblock, given the two still work out cheaper than actually getting a PPV each month. But it would strike me as odd that Sky are switching everything to PPV right before the Network comes out, so wouldn't be at all shocked if we get a PPV-less version.

Vince himself said in the video everything starting with the royal rumble

When WWE did the "knee jerk" launch, I was able to access the network with my US sub in Ireland with no VPN.

I also emailed WWE about it and asked when the Network launched in the UK, could I use my US sub when "travelling to the UK" and they said I could.

    Huh.

I wonder then if the price increase might be that Sky will be getting a little something extra as well then, to compensate the fact they basically are about to get **** on, but WWE want that exposure still....

So the general consensus here is that most of us are sticking with our US subs and turning the VPN off? Seems too good to be true, WWE are no fools when it comes to taking money from people.

I genuinely think WWE is focused on pumping up the number of subscribers as much as possible for Wall Street rather than revenue from the service in the near term. Just look at the free month deal they did in December.

Stick with what you have. My sub doesn't renew until Feb 5th anyway so plenty time to test it out

They're also obviously not worried about blocking usage.

Heck I've been sharing my login with 3 friends the last 6 months. And we've all watched PPVS simultaneously. Not saying it'll last forever but I'll take what I can get.

Not sure sure about that as they have botched the Network launch (they pissed off US the cable companies and got dropped from some of them).

I do think however that Rovert's point about duking the stats is on point. They need subscriber numbers and the discount vs. Sky Box Office monopoloy will send people to the network.

    http://www.ewrestlingnews.com/news/the-official-press-release-on-the-wwe-network-launching-in-the-uk-stephanie-comments

UPDATE: Stephanie McMahon spoke with The Sun about the launch, saying, “I think the beauty of the WWE Network is that there really is something for everyone…We have the most passionate fans in the world. The Network, as well as all of our programming is designed to give them a creative experience worthy of that passion.”

She added: “There are no differences with the exception of the price point – it is £9.99 in the UK and €12.99 in Ireland. We’re ready to press that button on January 19, just in time for the Royal Rumble.”

As to the company’s relationship with Sky, she said, “It is important to note we continue our very strong relationship with BSkyB and we are proud to be their partner. But the WWE Network is exclusively owned by WWE so it is important for subscribers to know they can only sign up via WWE.com.”

I'll be picking and choosing the months I get it depending on the PPV's so will the Wrestlemania month cost extra?

The price point announced in the UK would suit sky. Alt of people like us would only pay to watch a big show like mania and had other ways of seeing the remaining shows anyway.

People will still buy the major shows from Sky if they are not that interested in a regular sub to the network. A lot of parents for example would but a PPV as a treat but wouldn't want a regular subscription and if they are not into wrestling wouldn't be aware of the Network.

I am sure we all have limited budgets some way or another. Also you have things like UPC going up €7 or whatever, Water charges etc. Don't feel like you are obligated to subscribe to WWE as it is some religion or something. Ultimately it is up to WWE to keep you interested. You more than give them to benefit of the doubt watching Raw every week given how uneven the product can be 52 weeks out of the year. It is a business not a charity. Subscription services rely on people "forgetting" to cancel.

    ^^^

This. They shot themselves in the foot so much at the launch with the 6-month commitment. It just made people look for loopholes and think of how they'd want to get out of that commitment, whereas if they'd have gone cancel anytime from the get-go more people would've just kept the sub without thinking about it until each PPV comes around and they think, "Oh yeah, I can just watch that now. Handy!"

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 42,954 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lord TSC

Yeah, my Netflix account has ticked over for a few months now, barely used, but I can't be bothered to cancel it in case something comes on I want to see :/
