Is 12 and a half stone healthy for a 5"8 23 year old male?

I was originally 15 stone and I lost 2 and a half stone lately and wanted to know is 12 and a half stone healthy for a 5"8 23 year old male? I am not looking to build up muscle or to get 'ripped' or anything I couldn't care less about that but I wanted to know is this weight healthy?

    Thanks for your help.

Probably could lose another stone imo, mirrors a good way to judge! If youre going purely off numbers the bmi scale would be your best bet

I wasn't trying to insult the guy I just wanted to give him the honest help and analysis he was looking for, after losing so much weight he will have very little muscle mostly just fat which is heavier than muscle so his weight will be deceptive I used to be overweight and am now 5"7 10 stone yet still have a few flabby bits I'm not happy with.
but I wanted to know is this weight healthy
Congratulations on your massive weight loss, you arent going to get a heart attack anytime soon but according to the BMI scale at 5"8 175 pounds you are still overweight, if you want my suggestion it would be to lose another stone also maybe start introducing weights into your workouts not necessarily to get "ripped" just to build a bit of under muscle which will help keep the fat off.

Anyway good luck whatever you decide to do and congrats again on losing 2.5 stone

How do you feel? Healthy can mean different things to different people.

It’s impossible for anyone here to tell you if it’s a healthy weight.

Your 23 don't be stressing now about a few pounds, eat well, get a bit of exercise and enjoy life. Sometimes stressing the small stuff can do more damage that the small stuff :)

Everyone's right, because it all depends on how you define healthy. If you define healthy as "living a normal life without experiencing any weight-related complications", then at 23 you could realistically be carrying 10 stone too much and be "healthy", because you'll be fat and get out of breath climbing the stairs, but you probably won't experience any health complications from your weight.

At 33 or 43, that ten stone will start to destroy you. So if you define healthy as, "A weight which will not have any significant long-term implications", then you're about OK. Outside of your current weight, if you like the way you look, then great. If not, then lose more. That simple.

Basing advice on BMI? You've discredited yourself straight away. Will Genia, for example, has a BMI of 28. The fat bloater.

Unless the OP is an elite athlete or a bodybuilder (I'm willing to bet he's not), BMI is probably fairly relevant. There is no one scale that holds true for everyone, only scales that work for most people.

BMI is not accurate for 100% of people so that means it's not accurate for ANYONE???

I can't wear the colour yellow. Doesn't suit me. Does that mean the whole world shouldn't wear it?

I dont want an argument man just going by what hes told me which is that he recently lost 2.5 stone and has no interest in muscles etc. can we just leave this here? I was never a debater!

My Brother is the same height and weight as you. He's perfectly healthy, active too, and the weight suits him.

Have you had anyone given you a rough estimate of your body fat percentage?

totally agree,my advice would be don't post such a Q on the internet,i'm training for a marathon and I'm 5'8 and just under 13 stone,to look at me you'd say I'm no way over 12,it's your build, bone density etc.
My one bit of advice is don't weigh yourself often just try to stay away from things like the pastry I just had :D

Do you know if yellow suits the OP?

    No?

    Ok then.

The BMI test is more than likely going to tell the OP that they're obese, and they're not. I did mine recently and I was considered obese. It told me my ideal weight was 11stone or so which is bollocks because I look skinny now at amost 14stone. I'm 5'10.

Morale being OP, judge it yourself. The main goal for most people who lose weight is to look good naked. So do you think that you do?

OP, are you happy with how you feel and look? If so, grand.

You should consider some resistance training though. It's not just about getting big or ripped.

Are you not just in the overweight category? You have work to do yet to hit obese :)

Actually, the problem with BMI is that it often classes people as overweight, when a more accurate test would class them obese.

OP has a BMI that just about puts them in the overweight category.

Nope, the thing I was on in boots says obese. Granted I know these things are grossly inaccurate but what else is a fella to do in boots while herself is playing with make up and you've already wasted 30e on a new razor and sh!te you don't need?:pac:

You are at like 28 bmi, 30 is obese I thought. Guess it depends on what site you use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭smemon

you've a BMI of 26.5 which puts you firmly in the 'overweight' category.

i'm going to go against all the advice given and say that if you're questioning and concerned about your weight now, don't just put it to the back of your mind, do something about it *now* while you're still young... attack it.

10 years down the line you could be 3 stone heavier and leading a much more hectic lifestyle with less time to yourself so it will become much more difficult to shift the weight and change your lifestyle...

if you can hit your ideal weight now when you're young and get used to eating the same stuff / same amount of stuff, then not only will you become less concerned about your weight / health, but it'll serve you well for the future...

30 is obese I thought. Guess it depends on what site you use.

30 is usually the number used. I think that once you hit 30, there is about a 95% chance that you would be classed obese using a body fat composition test, though I need to check that up.

That's still a one in twenty chance that the BMI test is wrong, so you'll see a lot of exceptions to the rule, but ignoring it completely wouldn't be sensible.
