I had to be reminded it was my birthday this year.

I don't even care about it but most I know people care about their birthdays and I'm so bad at remembering them. My Dad's birthday is on New Year and I still forget sometimes.

I make out that I am not interested so she will make a bigger fuss and get me a better present, even throw a bit of guilt tripping in to boot.

The secret is to never be too happy with the present, even if you are absolutely fcuking delighted... but there is a fine balance to being ungrateful.

January is a crap time to have a birthday. I'm 41 this month and I hate that people feel they have to buy me a gift when money's so tight after Christmas. Frankly I couldn't care less about my own birthday but I do like organising other people's birthdays, go figure. Have already stated that I don't want a birthday cake this year.

Nope, don't give a toss when it's my birthday.

I think it's meaningless really, especially as I get older I get even more disillusioned with birthdays/christmas/new years/patricks day/etc..

Don't care about my birthday. Haven't since I was 16. Don't like when there's a fuss made about it.

Yeah yeah I'm another year older. Just give me money and move on.

Just woke up from a two hour nap, that's how much interest I have in it!

I love my birthday I must say. Going 21 this year but won't have a massive party. I'll have a separate night for college friends, school friends and family. Three great night I hope to have :D If it's your birthday and you don't get the shift in a club there has to be something seriously wrong with you. Great craic.

I'm not one to make a fuss over my birthday and I'm turning 21 this year I'm going on holiday to Rome instead rather than having a massive party which I'd prefer as I love going away . I might go out one night with a few friends when back not too bothered .

What I don't understand is, why is there such a big deal made out of 21st and 30th birthdays in particular?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,428 ✭✭✭.jacksparrow.

People's birthday was the day they were born, simple as that, it's never your birthday after that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

I don't care about my own birthday, never have but I like to remember the birthdays of people who matter to me

I love birthdays! Mine was yesterday and I got a cake in work and then came home and there were cards and flowers and presents and more cake and laughing.

Why not celebrate a day for cake and laughing?

I like my birthday. I don't love it as much as when I was a kid obviously, but it's nice to get well wishes and gifts on a day of your own once a year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,646 ✭✭✭✭qo2cj1dsne8y4k

I love making other people's (that I love) birthdays special, especially when they don't like their birthday or might be sad on their birthday.

Not overly pushed on my own, a cuddle and a movie and cook me dinner and I'm grand, but there would be murder if he forgot mine

I'll be 23 at the end of the month and I really don't care, for a girl that is really strange apparently. I'd rather go out and celebrate other peoples birthdays than my own. I don't like the fuss being on me tbh, I prefer being the one that fusses over others.

I have a two year old and have just realised I really sound like a mammy :o

Had a 21st party in the local pub, it was a good night, that was the only time I celebrated a birthday.

If you say " the shift " there has to be something seriously wrong with you, and you probably wont get it.

My birthday wasn't celebrated as a kid, so when I became an adult I loved celebrating it and being made a fuss of. I just think it's the one day I can get spoilt that's all about me. And I have only really had about 12 of them as I only started celebrating at about 18.

Aw how come you didn't celebrate as a kid ElleEm?

It was a religious thing. It didn't make a difference as a kid but as I grew up I realised there was a day I could get pressies just for me so totally bought into it!!

I'm 50 next month and I have been told by many I must have a party. People don't think about what you want just what they want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,681 ✭✭✭✭P_1

Pretty much just another day for me, albeit one made slightly nicer by some folk giving me some gifts

Maybe they care about you and want you to be happy and to have a nice day, to mark what's perceived to be a special birthday making sure you're not on your own and that you have a good time. God!

Some people might prefer to spend the day alone though. Sometimes there's nothing worse than being forced to be the center of attention in a room full of people you hardly know and are unlikely to talk to again for some time because somebody in your family wants to partake in a keeping up with the Jones' like dick measuring contest.

I'd be mortified to have a birthday party! Never had one. My idea of a nightmare. Someone carried out a cake and everyone sang Happy Birthday to me in work last year. It was so awkward and uncomfortable. I appreciate the thought but anyone who really knows me knows I would never want that!

I can see where he is coming from, I'm going to be 40 at the end of the year and I've already had people saying "oh you have to have a party" even though I have no interest in having one.

Sure people mean well but some of us just don't want to go down the party route and I think that should be respected instead of having it pushed on us.

I've never understood the importance of birthdays. They weren't made a big deal in my house when I was growing up and now as an adult I just think it's cringeworthy having to be the centre of attention just because I happen to be X years old.
