    Oh right.

    New to scopes.

Was advised to get these "target turrets" for longer ranges?

What would you set it on for rabbits?

target turrets not needed on a 22lr for hunting and even more so if your only learning! there are some very good cheap scopes out there that would be perfect for you. i had a €60 nikko sterling 3-12x50 on a hmr for years and found it great, always on x9 power

Few lads in my area reckon these target turrets are a must????????

I was going to get a S&B 6x42 but same lads told me I'd need more magnification???????

    Getting rally confused now :(

6x is plenty magnification to shoot accurately out to past 100 yards, which is about as far as you're going to shoot with a .22 on rabbits. Personally I'd rather something in the 1.5-6x or 2-8x range. Target turrets are totally unnecessary. Some might like them, but zero it at fifty to seventy five yards, depending on how far your likely shots are and hold over or under as necessary out to a hundred yards and you'll be fine. I'd not worry about fiddling with turrets. You'll find situations where you want low magnification more often than when you want high mag. If you want a good test, put something the size of a rabbit on the ground and take seventeen good strides away. Now, ask yourself, could you comfortably pick your shots on that target. If the answer is yes, that's the size of a rabbit seen at 102 yards at 6x magnification. I suspect you'll find that's a pretty handy aiming mark.

few lads in your area are full of crap and dont know what they are talkin about so!

the s&b 6x42 would be great on the 22lr

is that accurate?? never heard it before but it makes sense and could be handy in the field!

Yes it's the perfect scope for your 22lr.
Plenty of zoom for when you need it, and great target turrets to dial in the drop.

That's what magnification is! Whatever it looks like at ten yards with the naked eye is what it'll look like at a hundred yards on 10x magnification.

yes it should be. 102/6= 17

It works for both yards and metres.

This subject comes up so often it makes me sick.

So yes a x6 scope is enough, but not for me.

All my scopes have a higher zoom so that I have it when I need it, best to looking at it than looking for it.
With your x6 scope try turning it up to take a better look at your target YOU CAN'T.
And I buy scopes of a good quality for the job in hand. So a 5-15x40 on the 22lr, and 6-24x50 on both my .223 and .308.

3-9 x 40 is ample for rabbits. I have shot hundreds + of rabbits with that set up. As I posted before I prefer close head shots rather than anything above 75 yards. Any thing from 15 to 75 yards requires no hold over / under.

If it was me today I would go with something in the 3-9 mag, mil dot recital and 50mm objective. With some trial and error you will know your exact points of aim over various realistic hunting ranges and still have plenty of dots left over to allow for those shots at further ranges.

don't buy one there you will get hit with duty and vat etc

    try here http://www.scopesdirect.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=Bushnell_Elite_Tactical_5-15x40_Rifle_Scope

if you have a ROI vat number it's even better value

You will be hit for tax on this and it will also be on the postage charge. The home grown offer on the for sale section is good value when all is considered.

I do use a Target Turret scope with high mag and SFP on another .22 I have, but never play with the turrets when hunting.

This is what the local experts were telling me too.

I reckon it wasn't me has it right above & I'm gonna stick with lower mag & better quality :)

Tried to order from there and the only country it will ship to is UK :(

How much extra is VAT & duty from US likely to be?

Apparently scope on ebay would cost approx. €412 including taxes etc new and a S&B 6x42 s/h I've been offered would be approx. €450.

From advice here I reckon I'll go with S&B but I like the look of the Bushnell

target turrets are good for longer ranges, but on a 22 not needed, any scope set on 9 mag is plenty for rabbits on a 22,so why spend big on a 22 scope? look at deben hawke web site, some perfect 22 scopes there, they deliver here,i would suggest a 4-12x50.thats all the mag youll ever need on a 22,;)

    X1 on all that info...
Plus i'd pick better quality glass over mag any day...

Op what is it gonna be mainly used for ?

Just looking there is it a fixed mag scope at 15 power. Hardly is what does the mag start at.

    Is it 5-15 if so.

The scope is fine for both rabbits and targets. But if I was to advise you and you were just starting to hunt rabbits I'd say don't get a scope that's 2 complicated with parallax and target turrets. It can get complicated and frustrating if your finding it hard to get to grips and if your getting to caught up in it.

When I changed up in scopes it fryed my brain and I found it hard to set it up and kept adjusting it because I thought it all had to be perfect for every shot. Now on my 22 I don't adjust parallax at all and on the turrets I never use them. Having said that I'm not on a range much.

If its for targets it is most certainly nice to be able to turn the zoom right up and get a closer look at your target as sometimes they can be hard to see pending what target your using and your skill level. Parallax and target turrets would be a big plus to make sure everything is bang on but only if you understand them and are able to use them.

Now you could say your better of to learn now but if you're a new shooter you will have more than enough to be thinking about.

Correct and agree 100%, it is way too much scope for a .22 and too expensive:eek:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭Snakezilla

Buy a decent little hawke scope and spend the rest of the money on a good bipod, silencer or something. I have a Hawke nite eye 3-9x50 Illuminated Mil dot on my .22 and I never wanted anything over 9x mag. The .22lr is a short range calibre. My advice would be to spend €150 on a scope here and spend the rest on some other gear you need.

Go with the Schmidt you can always trade the rifle & keep the scope,it will grace any caliber you decide on in the future.Personally I am in the camp of buying the best glass you can stretch too.If you cannot see it you can't shoot it.Best of luck.

I had the 4-12 on my hmr and it was great. I sold it with the gun over 2 years ago and it is still doing a great job for the new owner. Very good in in day light and lower light ajd great under the lamp. Very good value scopes

Thanks they seem to be great value for money so.

Don't no much about the model but I really think parallax free scopes suit 22 better, saying that with a little fiddling you can set it to be parallax free out to 100 yards.
And the 50mm can really be annoying regarding check weld but I putt a hawk 12x4 50 on my nephews .22 last week bought from a lad on boards and is was a grand job.
