It's weird how people go on about beards being sexy and you always hear of women(on the internet) saying they're sexy yet..any girl I know despises them. Just very strange.

Hmm. Maybe that is just Irish women, I think they prefer men to be a bit effeminate.

The answer to your conundrum is contained within your post. Women dig beards, girls don't. Which opinion is relevant, will depend on whether you are a man or a boy.

Beards are like spaniels, better to stroke than to kiss.

Much like willies too I'd imagine.

Even if women don't dig your beard you'll always get respect from your bros.

I wouldn't agree there at all. I'm an Irish woman and myself and my female friends would be fairly in favour of men with beards in general. Just not like Ronnie Drew (no idea why he's the first name in my head!) kinda beards, more fairly short beards. Probably my favourite is a good bit of stubble but I like a short beard too.

And I definitely wouldn't say Irish women like their men more effeminate- some maybe, but overall Irish women don't like when men wax their chests, use fake tan, wear jewellery, dye and/or straighten their hair etc.

There's two types of people in this world, men with beards and women !!

I like some beards but mostly bears do nothing for me

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

My girlfriend always said she hated beards, so I waited till she was away with work for a few weeks and grew one on the sly, sounds a bit crazy I know. Now she loves it, and doesn't want me to shave it off. Has to be well maintained tho, otherwise ya look like a Hobo Hipster.

Very few men "can't grow" a beard. Maybe children at 18 or 20 can't, but the only men I know who can't grow a beard have actual genetic causes for it.

I've always toyed with it, and now that beards are somewhat in fashion I gave it a go back in November. Grew a pretty neat little thing in two weeks. OK, it gets itchy as hell, but remove the neckbeard and most of the itchiness goes away. Plus it looks a lot neater when you do that, you don't look like a hobo. The main thing that got to me? Maintenance. So shaving is a pain in the ass, but I'm really lazy about it, I'll have about 5mm of stubble before I bother. But with the beard, unless you wash your face every time you have something to eat, your face smells. Plus while you're eating and drinking, there's always hair in your food. So in lieu of not shaving, you instead are washing your face 5 or 6 times a day. That's not easier.

Whether a beard looks good is dependent on the individual's face I think. It's also a lot subtler than beard/no beard. For example, when my hair is really short or too long, any kind of stubble or beard just makes me look messy, like I haven't been showering. Then, a nice clean face looks best on me.
When my hair is at the perfect in-betweeny length, stubble looks awesome on me, like I sculpt it every morning. Same goes for beards; too long or too short a beard and some people can look unkempt. And for some it just doesn't work at all.

For me, the beard looked OK. Even the missus who prefers the clean-shaven baby face above all else thought it was tolerable. However, her Dad has had a beard for longer than I've been alive and one of her remarks was that it's "like being kissed by my Dad". There are few sentences that can make a man nauseous faster, so it had to go.

I've a fantastic beard. It's about 3 inches in length. Will be having it off soon though. Interviews coming up.

I grow my beard for two reasons.

    1. I think the shape of my face looks strange and the beard seems to mask it
    2. Since my mid 20's any hair above my earlobe has decided it doesn't want to grow anymore while all facial hair doesn't know how to stop. It feels foolish to waste facial hair growth now by shaving daily.

Currently sporting half of one at the moment.

Pro-tip, make sure your trimmer is fully charged before you decide to shave your beard on a whim :o

Just for fun you should talk to yourself in the mirror with a conversation between beardy you and non-beardy you. Face the mirror side-on. One could be your evil alter-ego perhaps. I advise using different voices for maximum effect.

I have long hair so to prevent being mistaken for a woman I need a beard. Although I look like im homeless or I should be turning water into wine.

Or maybe cut your hair? Far less hassle.

Ha, I had shaved it into a handlestache for the craic first, was shaving one side of it when the battery died. Half handlebarstaches could be next year's fashion craze y'now :P

Ladies and some guys love the hair. Plus Halloween is sorted. I get a haircut once a year. It is far easier to grow a beard.

Hmmm, I would be a fan of beardage, but there is a point where it's just wrong-critical beardage!
Good beard for me is jus stubble, bit longer, but once the skin disappears that's a no no. However sharp/ scrub the skin off ya
    stubble is not fun either.
Any shaping/goateeing is a big turn off for me, let it grow free!

I admire the full on captain birdseyes, they can suit some people, but i wouldn't want one up close an personal ;)

(i have also always secretly wanted a beard. I think it's unfair we can't grow them. I would like a long under chin thinking beard i can stroke and ponder on! )

Plenty of stubble makes a man!

I love beards. It's when men start doing lamb chops and all that craic that it stops being a turn on.

I've had a beard for the past year or so and don't think I'll go back.

I'm 25 and makes me look low to mid 30's though but I don't care

Beard trimmers are great, set a length and run it over your face once a week, I like a short beard, doesn't itch, looks good, is warm, doesn't get food in it

Oh dear God no... *vomit*. Hate long hair on men. I shudder even thinking about it. Don't mind a bit of scruffiness or a bit shaggy but any longer and it's not for me.

I cant grow a full beard, I just get mustaches, soul patch and a goatee. I make it work.

3 pages in and no-one's mentioned The Beards yet? For shame! :D
I myself am fond of a nice bit of beard on a man but nothing too crazy- don't want to be picking hair out of my teeth for a week after kissing!
Nice and neat is the way to go.

I've been sporting a beard since last august. About the same time I decided to shave my hair off, so now I trim the beard once every three or four days with a scissors and shave my head about the same time - weird sort of role reversal thing ! Girlfriend loves it, and its low maintenance which I really like.

    Some beardy inspiration http://100beards.tumblr.com/

Beards. Ah yes. 3 extra armpits on my face. No thanks

Beards should also be illegal for the under 40s. They look ridiculousness

Beards = hotness. You're almost guaranteed the ride if you have one. But only if it's full face, none of this goatee business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,465 ✭✭✭✭GreeBo

I've had a trimmed beard for a about 3 years now...varying between trimmed down to stubble to let grow wild and random for a week or two.
Also will closely trim the neck area, prefer that gone.

For Christmas day I shaved it all off and have shaved every morning since...my poor face doesnt know whats happened to it..and my neck...my poor neck!
Heres hoping my skin toughens the hell up quickly!

I used to think I looked 12 with a clean face (Im 36) but apparently thats no longer the case...I guess age does that to you!
Still think I prefer me with a beard though, but apparently stubble rash was becoming a problem for someone...
