For that sort of money you might be mainly looking at mobile broadband, you might scrape fixed wireless for that price.
There's no rule over what's good or bad with these, it depends purely on your location.

You may live in a fibre area where you can get Vodafone Simply Broadband for €30 (or €27 if you have a Vodafone bill mobile too) for a 20GB limit, or 150GB for €6 more or unlimited for €35.

If you reckon you need unlimited usage and you're in a UPC cable area, there is the fibre chat package for €37

If you can get this its probably your best bang for buck.

And what is on offer from vodafone for the €30

Up to 70mb speed, 20 GB usage, no phone. €30 a month.
Depends on location though, might get up to 8mb or up to 24mb on the same deal if you're in a non upgraded area. Basically whatever your line will take.

You'd want to have a fair idea how much allowance you need though.

    check out www.bonkers.ie ,
It's a really good comparison website for utilities, broadband, home & mobile phone, electricity and gas.
Input some basic information and it will provide you with with whatever is available in your area.

In the past 6 weeks I've changed my electricity supplier and changed plans on my broadband because of the info I was able to get from that site.
It's difficult to compare like for like packages, each supplier has small differences in what they are offering but you can get a pretty good idea of the best offers when it's laid out in front of you.

Just with that; I put in my mothers phone number (lives in an area where 1mb is the max she can get) and it comes up with vodafone up to 70Mb.
Now I know 1 is "up to 70" so don't get too excited - it's whatever your line will take.

Vodafone have a 3 month free offer on 18 month contract. I found them great.

You'll find there will be a decimal point in front of that 7 when its installed. My data speeds on my phone is twice as fast as my vodafone home BB.

    I'll be cancelling it tomorrow.

I'm with Vodafone for €32 a month (150gb add-on and mobile account discount) and it's perfect. Speeds are great, no line trouble at all and the cheapest option by far for me.

I think it was sold to me as 24mb and well, that's pretty much what I'm getting :)

I'm paying 42 a month, for a 300 mb allowance and getting download speeds averaging about 2mbs.

Midlands does your mum have a landline you can test the speed? If not use a neighbours for an approximation

What package are you on? Follow the link colm mcm provided, that's the one I'm on: http://www.vodafone.ie/home-phone-broadband/simply-broadband/?ts=1388270918652

Vodafone simply max pref (discount as I'm a long term customer) I get the same discount as Vodafone mobile bill pay customers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35,514 ✭✭✭✭efb

I pay €32 for 400GB allowance and ave speed of 7-10MB

    EFIBRE coming in Jan

Is €32 your TOTAL bill each month? Are you eligible for the full 70mb but it's just restricted based on your location? Do you have phone calls etc with that or is it broadband only? Are you a mobile customer too?

Yes. Yes. No calls. Legacy not mobile customer

Hmm, how did you get the 400GB limit? Did you haggle that over a phone call?

I can't find anything on vodafone legacy other than what looks like a discontinued mobile bill pay tariff (and an expensive one at that considering all the rolling monthly plans such as 48months.ie's "the don").

They do unlimited for €35 anyway.

It's only 150gb for €35 I think? Which I'd never need but would be nice to have an extra 250gb for the same price :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35,514 ✭✭✭✭efb

Maybe it's not 400GB but it claims it's unlimited with a right to throttle after 250GB or something I never get near

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35,514 ✭✭✭✭efb

I'm a legacy customer so I'm on the preference rate. 8 years with BT/Vodafone

    It says €35 here
    http://www.vodafone.ie/home-phone-broadband/simply-broadband-max/?ts=1388340267002

The 150gb only works out cheaper (€33) if you're a mobile customer, otherwise unlimited seems to be €1 cheaper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

I knew something wasn't right, I knew my bills were only €32, not €33, so just double checked there. I definitely signed up to simply broadband with the 150gb addon, I think it was working out at €32 before, but the sums on the above link would indeed make it €33, I just checked my bill and it says I'm on simply broadband max (€35) with a €3 discount (for being a mobile vf user), so I'm getting simply broadband max for €32 :) Guess I'm on unlimited anyway, my line musn't be 70mb compatible but I'm getting the most of my 24mb anyway so all good :)

Looking for internet for same budget and came across this...
    http://www.imagine.ie/offer/
But I hear nothing but bad things about them?
We are both payg Vodafone customers so we might get a good deal off them you reckon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

I'd stick with fixed wireless if I were you. If you can get the Simply broadband max from Vodafone for €32, it's a great deal! I'd say you'll need to ring them up to see if you can get it for that price..

    Just got it there.

32 a month and guaranteed 24mbs on my line.

There is a 70 euro installation and modem charge.

7 day cooling off period if your not getting the speeds promised.

Interesting to see what speed you get :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Hmmm, I don't remember ever having to pay the installation charge? Maybe worth a phone call to see if they can do it for free :)

I had this conversation for 20 mins with the guy on the phone. He guaranteed minimum of 24mbs. But wouldn't put it in the contract when I asked him.

The engineer is fitting it between 9.30 and 12.30 on Friday. If it doesn't do what it says on the tin, it'll be cancelled first thing sat morning.

40 installation and 30 for the modem.

Hmm, almost sure I didn't have to pay anything for either. My speedtest result is above in one of the earlier posts. It's a good speed, but not quite 24mb :)

Are you getting them speeds in Kerry?

My package is also unlimited, which my young fellow and you tube wil be happy with!

Don't think you should be paying for it unless your on a shorter contract?

The extra 6 months will cost you an extra 122 though, so it'll cost you more!

It won't really be though because even if you only get 12mb you won't get anything faster for less money :)

I'm getting almost 5 mbs hotspotting from my old android which I'm using as a modem. Been trying it with a month or two. its faster than the current home broadband Im on with VF.

Its perfect for netflix and any streaming on my kids tablet. And there is no contract. Just top: up when needed.

So unless they can provide proper fibre, I'll be cancelling.

The unlimited download is whats swaying me, towards the home BB.

Will you not be using any broadband after the 12month contracts up then?

I imagine I will, but if its not up to standard I'm only tied into 12 months as opposed to 18. They don't cut you off the day after your contract finishes, it just keeps rolling. So I dont see any advantage!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,294 ✭✭✭homingbird

My sister is in limerick & is using 3mobile broadband 20 gigs for 20 euro it the phone broadband & its perfect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

    €32 x 12 months + 6 out of contract + €70 will cost you €646
    €32 x 18 month contract will be €576

A difference of €70 at the end of the day, if you feel it's worth the 6 month quicker release from contract that's ok, I know competition is always going to decrease prices, to make the €70 back, you'd need to sign up to a new plan/provider after 12 months with a cost of at most €20.50 (€70 divided by 6 months taken from €32).

I'd probably just go for the 18 months now myself :)

Got a phone call today from Vodafone. They offered the simply broadband max for 35euro, free router and installation. I asked about discount he said no otherwise I would have to payfor modem.
I said I will ring him back and let him know. We are with Vodafone more than 10yrs so thought we would get it for 32, but we are payg.
He said we will have fibre optic broadband from 21st January, I presume that's faster download speeds etc?

I got it for 32 a month as PAYG. But I had to pay for installation and modem.

So it seem it depends on what phone operator you get, as to what deals you get!
