Rome. Racy, visceral, violent, excellent. Unlike a lot of shows that take a while to get used to, this really hooks you in from the opening scene. You will not regret it.

l also enjoy Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones.

The Wire isn't just "up to" Breaking Bad, it's better.

Rome is also on Netflix. A crying shame that they cancelled it.

Some of these suggestions are not on Netflix, including Boardwalk Empire.

The first season of Rome is great, though I felt the second season was just a lot of tits for the sake of tits. Boardwalk never really grabbed me, don't know why.

The wire is definitely on par with bb, as is sopranos (they're both arguably better depending on who you ask). Those 3 generally pop up in any favourite TV show threads. The west wing usually gets a shout as well.

It's probably on Netflix somewhere in Africa, but people here assume that everyone can work around that.

And Rome wasn't a HBO exclusive either. When I said there's no HBO stuff, I meant HBO original series.

    Deadwood.

    Boardwalk Empire.

    The Sopranos.

    The Wire.

    Luck.

They're the (other) best written tv shows of the last decade.

Yes, I think Rome is there as part of the BBC's content deal rather than HBO's. Same with stuff like Extras.

Rome it is, I see Ciaran hinds is playing Caesar.

The Americans. Season 2 starts in February after a really promising first season. I don't think it will reach Breaking Bad levels but it's been quietly brilliant.

Think they put season 7 & 8 up a couple of weeks ago on netflix. First few seasons of dexter are magic. Last season not so much

Can't believe battlestar galactica hasn't been mentioned yet, epic show, trumps all else

Totally forgot about the Americans very good show, Keri is the bomb.

Can't get bb outta our heads here, binged watched from Sept till Nov watched nothing elce, cost me €300 on broadband bill for the first month over shot the allowance, had just signed up to Netflix.

Was it worth it...could have bought boxset for seventy but sure fook it it was.

If you take anything from this thread it should be definitely watch Deadwood. ;)

Have to say I also rate 24 highly, especially the first 4 or 5 seasons.

Amazes me how people spend the likes of €50ish quid on box sets and monthly subscriptions to the likes of Netflix for these shows.

Fair City is available for free given you have the basic tv channels and is on most nights.

All these shows are the same really when it boils down to basic themes, things like the characters and locations might be different, but at the end of the day it's all very similar.

Similar story, just watched it right through from end of September until Christmas Eve. I'm suffering awful withdrawal symptoms! It's just an astonishing show.

Great show, only one season but they're in the process of making the next one.

same as Orange is the New Black. not funny enough as a comedy, not dramatic enough as a drama, but its interesting at the same time

Lillehammer and Orange Black are piss poor...and the original House of Cards is far sharper

Boardwalk Empire shoulda been all that but wasn't...

Start the Sopranos again, it's old enough now to rewatch and be surprised all over again. If not, Dexter:)

Is Battlestar on Netflix? One of the finest things ever to grace the medium of film. Big budget Sci-Fi action. Other than that, my recommendations would be Boardwalk Empire, The Wire, Sopranos, Rome, Banshee, and if you can stomach mediocre first season, Spartacus turned out to be a real diamond in the rough in season 3.

Just finished Orange is the new Black and really enjoyed it.

In the middle of House of Cards now and while it is enjoyable, unlike Orange, I don't have that sense that no matter what I'll make time for more of it this evening.

I haven't seen Orange is the New Black, and I've never heard of it before, tbh. That said, House of Cards is not a comedy, by any stretch of the imagination. It's not funny at all. It doesn't try to be. But as a political drama, it really is excellent.

Has anyone mentioned Sons Of Anarchy?

Other top shows are The Wire,Oz,The Shield.

Something I'm really into now is Person Of Interest.

    Yup, two good shows.
House of Cards is a slow boiler but very good imo. Spacey does a good job as always.

Anything connected to Sherlock Holmes is my new fav genre (The Mentalist, Sherlock, Elementary).

Sherlock is top show, its starting up again on BBC anyone know at start start.
Funny though wotson has said nobody realize he was in 'the hobbit' "im only famous for Sherlock"
