Are a disgrace. I don't work in either but wouldn't dare contribute to this greed.

Why wouldn't they? It's not a holiday, it's the eve of a holiday. What next? Take off Christmas Eve Eve?

My entire family will be in the pub tomorrow night for a few drinks, partially to actually get to see each other over christmas, and partially to celebrate the life of a family member that passed away very recently. I see nothing greedy about that.

Using a dead relalive as an excuse to spend Xmas eve in a pub :o

I used to work in a pub on Christmas Eve and it was easily one of the most enjoyable nights to work. Everyone would be in great spirits, having fun and would be buying the staff drinks. I don't really understand how you find it "greedy"?

    How is spending money "greed"?

    ... the hell?

What difference does it make whether people go to shops or pubs on Christmas eve? It's not like there's anything peculiar out the day other than being the day before Christmas day. I worked Christmas eve for a good few years and there was loads of people out and about buying stuff.

What in name of Christ are you talking about OP?

It's traditional in my family to run around like a blue arse fly on Christmas Eve and I fully intend to keep it up.

If I haven't, out of sheer desperation, bought some member of my family a wholly unsuitable present, then a small part of me will feel a little disappointed that I couldn't follow in my Dad's footsteps successfully.

As you see, I was once given Patsy Cline's greatest hits for Christmas and I don't intend to let it lie. I intend to ruin at least one person's Christmas each and every year for what happened to me and last minute Christmas Eve shopping is the best way I know of making sure of it and God help any store that doesn't stick to it's advertised closing times as I also intend to put them fully to the test.

    Jingle all the way motherfcukers!

My hubby works in a pub and would agree to a certain extent. Yes, there's a great atmosphere but not so great waiting for people to leave at the end of the night so you can get home before Santa.

Plenty of people shop on Christmas Eve for the atmosphere, personally I don't see the problem with it

    Greed?...

Not really, we'd be there anyway, there'll just be more of us. Those who would normally go to my nan's house will now be coming to the pub instead because....well.... there is no more nan.

Are contributing to the economy. So what if people go to the shops, they're open aren't they?

Grrr people can be so judgmental and negative. Be happy and festive. Enjoy the holidays!

I will go to the shop tomorrow for some small stuff. Just for you OP I'll call in for a couple pints in a pub too, thanks for the idea :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,147 ✭✭✭PizzamanIRL

Tugboats, if that's your way of thinking then shouldn't you be calling the shopkeepers and bar owners greedy since they're the ones opening up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

I might head to the pub for a few tomorrow afternoon, have worked christmas eve, day, new years eve day (doing it this year) easter sundays, paddys day you name it. that's the joys of working with the public.

Some people will only finish work today, I don't see the big deal...

If they want to shop or go for a drink, what's so greedy about it exactly?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,720 ✭✭✭Sir Arthur Daley

A few pints christmas eve cant beat it with a stick.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 723 ✭✭✭Daqster

I blame that boss guy who was on yesterday sending all his staff home and heading off to the flicks. He's now given AH's folk unreal expectations of humanity.

Course, if everyone did that, he wouldn't be able to go to the cinema, as they'd be closed!

Exactly, complain all day about the eijits doing their shopping (gifts, not the vitals ;)) at this late stage and then go for some pints. You won't see some of these people again and it's a great way to let loose for the staff and say goodbye.

As someone who has worked all the awkward days for five years I have no problem with people who go shopping on them, although I won't go shopping on the 26th, and I think the shops that open for those sales are fairly cruel to staff who have worked what is generally a really hectic week before!

    I'm an awkward person. :P

I always walk down the town with my parents, brother and sister. My sister and I don't live in the country anymore and my brother is away in college most of the time. It's basically the only time of the year the 5 of us get to do anything together, we have a quick look around the shops and then go for one Irish coffee together.

I love doing it and don't feel guilty about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 386 ✭✭scouttio

I think its fine going to the shops or pub on christmas eve but what I dont get is the amount of people to go shopping on Stephens Day. that should be a day for sitting at home eating leftover turkey sandwiches!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,097 ✭✭✭Herb Powell

Feck off OP, I'm going for pints tonight in my local village pub, meeting friends and talking **** with good people I haven't seen in months, and I'm looking forward to it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,743 ✭✭✭Wanderer2010

Why the hell would you go shopping on Christmas Eve- jostling through thousands of people, packed into shops like sardines, not to mention the traffic, parking and the fact that most items have been picked clean. Anyone who leaves it until the last minute to shop is an idiot. Christmas has been well advertised since September so if you are last minute you only have yourself to blame.
