Family car suggestions

People, I'm looking for ideas, suggestions, pros and con's of family size cars. We have a two year old and a 6 month old, so our existing saloon is under pressure with double buggies, shopping, etc. I'm looking for a hatchback or suitable estate rather than a people carrier.
    2010-2012, diesel, ball park 15k
    All comments appreciated.

Double buggy and shopping will need a lot of space. Mondeo hatchback?

An octavia would also fit the bill but they're old had for the most part these days. Tinny, floaty and not that big in the back.

so, you have a zero 10 and a 131, and your pub is next to a creche and a shopping mall?

    Zero 10= 2 year old
    131= 6 month old
    Pub = saloon
Shopping mall= pressure from buggies, shopping
Pretty funny when you get it.

    Wouldn't a zero 10 be a three year old?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,845 ✭✭✭Noccy_Mondy

That is a quality joke....... ya ... anyway.. getting back to business, a nice spec insignia wouldn't be too shabby or, as always a nice mondy, as previously mentioned. Tbh a hatch is really the best for your needs, rather than a saloon.

For the size of them they are tight in the back. Very bad packaging but they can look nice.

What car have you now OP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 320 ✭✭dedaw

Thanks for all the comments. Didn't realise the insignia would be tight in the back, and would consider the avensis except it's not available as a hatchback.
Currently in a 06 4 door Megane 1.5 diesel. We are amongst the lucky ones in that it has served us well, and goes on the sniff of diesel. We were probably going to change it in the new year anyway but it has become a bit more important now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

In that case I reckon you should be looking at small or mid size mpvs as the megane is big for its class and the next saloon/hatch class up won't be much bigger.

Any reliability issues with the c5?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Haven't heard of any horror stories with that generation of C5, they are pretty well screwed together and the 2.0 litre HDi is a trusted unit fitted to Peugeots, Fords and Volvos, more reliable than the smaller 1.6 HDi too.

    All fine, except that engine.

    105bhp and almost 1600kg :(

Better power to weight in a 1.2 Fiesta.

For 15k I would be looking at an Accord, Lexus IS220D, Mercedes C220

1.9 is fine in the Superb and no worse than the 1.6 that replaced it. OP needs space so that rules out the IS200.

    Are the IS small?

I thought they were Avensis size cars.

They are similar in size to an A4 and 3 Series both of which have less room than an Avensis size car.

They're more corolla size, only with a hump in the rear floor.

What about a Laguna III then, a lot more reliable than the model before it:

The boot space and size of the car while still nice enough styling and not estate or mpv is pretty much why we went for a Laguna II despite the rep from the early ones in particular. Hauled two very large suitcases, buggy, laptop bags, baby bag, car detailing bucket and bits n pieces for Christmas recently, all in the boot rather than loose in the back seats. Good legroom in back seats too and space in the front.

presume Laguna III is at least as big?

Guys, any opinions on the Peugeot 3008? What's the boot like in it?

Boot is alright but not that long. It's actually not that bad a car, but I still think the electrics are poor enough. Had use of one for a whole and there was a lot of random warnings that didn't make sense.

I like Toyota's of old but I don't care for any of their newer stuff. They are pretty average in every department imo and have gone down hill a lot in terms of quality since their heyday of the late 80's to the late 90's.

While toyota's back then were just as bland as they are nowadays, they had a trump car of being better built, better engineered and better quality over the competition which made for a very justifiable reason to purchase one.

Imo Nowadays they don't have this trump card over the completion due to their cost cutting programmes over the past decade which has left them with only average build quality.

IMO they are living of their past reputation. Imo they are vastly overrated in this country.

I'm of the same opinion... Pity really.. They made some bullet proof stuff that suited paddys!

Would the 5008 be the same with the electrics? It would offer the boot room with the seats at the back down.

Lads, any comments on these. By coincidence they are in the same garage. Anyone know anything about the garage? Cheers.

The only comment I could make there is that they re both french.
I wouldnt touch a French car with a barge pole.

Also the pug has one of those stupid automated manual boxes and my least-favourite small Diesel engine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 320 ✭✭dedaw

If it's recommended to stay away from the French, how about a mondeo hatchback or estate or maybe the insignia hatchback or estate?

TX is a basic ceed too. The Mondeo is a much, much nicer car. Better spec, more powerful and comfortable. My father swapped a Mondeo like that for a newer ceed and if he didn't need a smaller car he'd never have sold the Mondeo.

It's a more comfortable place to be. I used to have a MK III, I've driven the Cee'd quite a bit and even the newer model doesn't come close in support from seats. It may be worthwhile looking for one with some more toys.

They're completely different cars to be fair.
Given the choice of a big car vs a small car, or a 2.0 vs a 1.6, nobody on the internetz is gonna choose the lesser car on paper.

Ok, fair point. 1.6 mondeo versus the ceed then? I know that mondeo doesn't compare in power to the 2.0 but that's not a high priority for me. Efficiency, comfort, room in the boot, room in the car itself, few toys and value for money are what I'm looking for.
Ceed estate versus the 1.6 hatchback?

Still completely different cars. I wouldn't buy a 1.6 Mondeo personally, but lots of people do and are perfectly happy.

For that money and your requirements you could even get a Kuga

Not fair on the Ceed comparing it to a car in the next category up.

It'd be Ceed vs Focus and Optima vs Mondeo

From a family point of view hatchback or estate?

    Pick a segment.

An estate in the C segment will give you more flexible load space, but a D segment hatch will carry you and your family in more comfort.

If you've narrowed it down to those 2 by test driving all the competition, then just get a Mondeo, but if you're happy to go as old as 08 then you might get an A4 Avant, 3 Series Touring or C Class Estate which fits in the best of both category.
