Thinking of letting my employees leave early...

Have about 40 staff who are booked to work today and tomorrow (i let them leave at lunch on xmas eve) and have been thinking about just letting them leave at lunch today instead and have a longer Christmas break.

Sounds like a good idea, until my wife pointed out that those employees who had actually booked today as annual leave may get slightly/incredibly annoyed by this, as they would have in effect wasted two days of annual leave, and those who have used their 25 days already would be getting a perk that the others aren't.

One way out of it would be to give the other staff an additional day's holiday next year, but to be frank not all of them deserve it.

So, AH, you have 2 hours to decide for me whether to let them all go home or not.

EDIT: Couldn't be bothered wating til 11.30, feel like taking my kids to the cinema to watch The Hobbit at lunchtime. Contacted the managers at the three offices, told them to tell their teams that they had asked me if everyone could leave early due to the weather/travel issues and I said yes, they can leave at 1pm as long as all critical tasks are completed. Makes the managers look good to their team, makes the company look good to the employees.

Also not concerned now about the employees who had booked annual leave. We regularly let offices finish early throughout the year, and if you're off you don't get extra time off as a result.

Could a Mod please close the poll and thread?

Let the employees who booked the time off get an extra two days leave next year.

    1) It isn't fair on the staff who booked a/l for today & tomorrow.

    2) things must be going well for you if you can discard 2 trading days on a whim!

There is no unnecessary work, but granted there is work that can wait til new year, it would just mean the other staff having to pick up the slack left by the ones currently in work though, so is that fair?

Do a Scrooge on it, and make them work until 17:30 on Christmas eve, with the heating off, then get visited by 3 ghosts and go nuts buying turkeys on Christmas morning.

She's a director of the company. Only fair that she has input. Or would that not be "manly" enough for you?

If you let them go, I'm sure they will be grateful enough to go the extra mile for ya next year.

You do know that next year they will expect the same again and if it dosent happen you will be the worlds worst!

If it's going to cause annual leave hassl, just let them off early today and early tomorrow. Anyone who booked the time off can't seriously expect that a full, hard days work was going to be done today or tomorrow anyway.

I can't imagine they'd think to ask their colleagues, let alone care by January (if that's when everyone is back).

Did you ask your wife was it ok to say that ?

And expect the same gesture next year once the precedence has been set.

All planned. We have just over 60 staff, and 40 are working.

Nah, I've done similar before. last year I gave everyone 2 days extra holiday to get over the Xmas party we threw. as a gift. We treat our teams well.

Presumably at some point in your life before you became an employer, you were an employee? And if so, I bet you once thought something along the lines of "When I'm the boss, I'll be much better than this guy. I'm going to treat my staff well and they will love me for it!"

Well now's your chance. A surprise day off right before Christmas is one of the best gifts you could give them, just do it and spend Christmas feeling wonderfully self-satisfied.

Plus, you can go home yourself.

Hehe I can't say "grow a pair" anymore....

At the end of lunch today, stand up and say that an unexpected order has come in and you will need them all to work till at least 3pm tomorrow. Then after the groans have died down, say "Only joking, ye can go home now and don't come back until after Christmas" then sit back and enjoy the free pints, high fiving and face licking that may come your way.

Op have you let them go early before at Xmas?

This happens every year where I work so I don't waste a holiday on it. But others choose to do so.

Today we will start leaving after lunch even though it is meant to be a full day. Leaving depends on just finishing your work etc

Bah humbug, OP....don't unclasp the handcuffs until 17:59 on the 24th!

Sure aren't they lucky they have a job to go to, rabble rabble rabble.

    Don't be jelly CJ

C'mon just send the mail now telling them to go.

People have **** to do for crimbo. I'm sure there's some there that need to use their holidays all year because of kids and all and never get to go away, and end up having none for the Christmas.

If people are already there let them off on a half day and let them off tomorrow. You could use the pretty damn unpleasant and somewhat dangerous weather as a reason if ye like to avoid folk taking liberties next year.

OR he could just be straight to the point and say "Don't expect this next year, I'm doing it because you have shag all to do and I'm in a good mood".

The weather is supposed to be terrible tonight, is let them go at lunch but state that it is exceptional circumstances due to bad weather forecast. Particularly if you have staff that need to travel etc

Are you going to tell us what line of business you are in?

60 staff would be a pretty big business, turnover in the several millions per annum.

Seems odd there is no work or trade to to at month/year end

The 60 are spread across 3 countries. And no, not going to divulge as it's quite a niche business and would be easy to find my identity.

Perhaps forget about today or maybe even have a permanent/extended lunch break, stating theirs no rush back (wink wink), that you just ask that anything needed finishing off gets done... or apply the same to the tea break in the morning.

ah just let them go, the same happens in my work, we always get an unofficial half day today but if we take annual leave its a full day that we have to take. its just the way it goes.

I wouldn't begrudge my colleagues a nice Christmas half day just cause i took an annual leave day!

I am just sitting here waiting for the mail myself, come on email, refresh, refresh, refresh.............
