Who is responsible for the inclusion of these dirty mini cabbages as part of typical Xmas dinner?

Personally, I think they are disgusting and should be shunned.

    Does ANYBODY actually like them?

delicious, especially when cooked with garlic and pancetta. a mini bacon and cabbage thing really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,850 ✭✭✭FouxDaFaFa

I used to hate them when Mum would cook them, they were pretty much the worst thing I'd ever tasted.

Turns out she was just boiling them to death.

They're lovely with a bit of mustard or caramelised onions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 505 ✭✭✭annieoburns

I love them but the problem is that are usually overcooked and then they turn nasty. I also like cabbage again properly cooked as in finely sliced and barely steamed.

    Like Cabbage - Hate Sprouts.

I'm doing Christmas dinner this year and there will be no sprouts cooked - I don't even want them in my kitchen. Some attendees have raised the 'sprout-ban' as an issue, but I'm holding firm.
Carrots and Orange, Buttered Spinach and Creamed Leeks will be the veg options.

    Down with Sprouts!

Sprouts contain a chemical that you are genetically programmed to either hate or not taste at all.

if you have the hatey sprouty gene than you will hate sprouts

if you DON'T have the gene then you might like them, or might not

its a BIT like the marmite thing......

I love them. Never frozen ones though, the frozen ones are dreadful. Sprouts need a bit of crunch to them. I think people who hate them have never had ones that've been cooked properly. Once they're cooked you have to drown them in butter and pour lashings of gravy on them.

    Love them, my favourite veg

They are amazing with cranberry sauce.

Plus they are yummy fried if there is any left over from dinner.

Could never understand the hatred for Brussel Sprouts. If cooked properly they are lovely. Especially nice this year as the weather was mild.

It's that sinister fůcker - the cauliflower, that we need to discuss in further detail.

Horrible horrible things. I also have the gene that makes them taste like bitter socks. I think they're utterly foul.

    Yup, they're lovely!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,039 ✭✭✭✭Geuze

    Yes, I eat them.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they are lovely, but they are grand.

This is my problem, I like sprouts, but how do I know I don't just like this chemical malarky that's supposed to be horrible?! I MUST KNOW!

Tasty as fook. They taste like they're good for you....and they are! They need to be eaten with something else though and not just on their own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 455 ✭✭Leogirl

Love them. My mum destroys them though so she's banned from cooking them for Xmas dinner!

Brussel sprouts taste best when, shortly before serving, you fcuk them in the bin

    Hideous things.

The very fact that most people who like them state they're magnificent when drowned in gravy, mashed with butter, bacon-obliterated etc etc, tell you all you need to know IMO.

Pfft lightweight. As soon as I can walk into a chipper and order a bag o' sprouts, I'll start buying larger trousers too.

The best way to have sprouts ,is to steam them, then dip them in a bit of whipped egg season with pepper and a bit of garlic roll in bread crumbs and fry in the pan yummy;)

i love overcooking them so they turn into mush. I also love stir frying fresh ones so that they're all crunchy. I could eat them every day, sometimes I eat them for weeks on end with dinner. And a superfood too!

No, absolutely nobody. Not one person. At all.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭rovoagho

Sorry, but if you love them covered in mustard (jesus) or cranberry, then you love mustard or cranberry. Sprouts should be sprout-flavour, the only acceptable additions are a light coating of butter or gravy. The only acceptable complement is mash (which puts colcannon to shame).

LOL at the genetic claims. I'd love to see evidence for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,202 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

All in my house love them the way I cook them, which is a closely-guarded secret.

Toss them in olive oil and honey and roast until cooked through.

What do they call a Brussel Sprout in Brussels?

What do they call a Brussel Sprout in Brussels?

Choux de Bruxelles (in the French-speaking parts of Belgium)

Spruitjes (in the Dutch-speaking parts of Belgium)

Rosenkohl (in the German-speaking parts of Belgium)

Horrible things. The only useful purpose they could possibly serve is as a biochemical weapon. Or the gas they eventually produce perhaps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,285 ✭✭✭bonzodog2

I like if not boiled to death. If you have the hate-sprout-gene, hate away

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 761 ✭✭✭youreadthat

I loooove them. One of the few vegetables that I actively like the taste of.

Serious ?. Brussels sprouts are lovely. A christmas dinner would not be the same without them imo.

    Do you like Beans ?

Strange how on the one date when everybody gets together you get served a food that explodes your stinker.

Maybe its a way of ending the Christmas fight and getting everyone back in separate rooms.

Love 'em. I think it almost looks cool to let everyone know how 'smelly' they are.

Sprouts, gravy and stuffing, come to daddy !!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,957 ✭✭✭miss no stars

love them. Have three nets of them blanched and sitting in ziploc bags in the freezer atm. They're great, just take a few out when you need them and cook as you like.
    nom nom nom
