Not so much of a bargain alert, but a warning so this seemed the appropriate forum to post it in as most of the Boardies on here are by definition, bargain hunters

TK Max's etc. Always up to 60% off.

It's all a big con as I have often suspected as this Dispatches show which aired on Channel 4 on 9 Dec 2013 shows.

I don't necessarily go to TK Maxx for big names...I just find it fun to have a search through and find some nice clothes, and for a decent price. Tesco is more expensive...

    Totally agree!

What is funny about this is all the designer names nobody has ever heard of..... Rep 3456 euros tho 19.99 to you lol.... And it turns out tkmaxx make all these clothes themselves, with no rrp ever.... I find it ok for woman's clothes... Himself reckons everything in there for men is shoddy, misshaped and crap.
I reckon he is right for once......

The problem with TK Maxx isn't the over inflated RRP but the fact that practically everything in there is rancid looking.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,180 ✭✭✭hfallada

I have found some bargains in it like Puma shoes that sell for €55 in schuh for €32 in TK Maxx. Some of their homeware is about a third cheap than amazon. School bags are often €20 in Tk Maxx, that are €30 elsewhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,083 ✭✭✭juneg

    Really good programme.

So basically TK Maxx has a big factory where they "make up" all these "luxury" "designer" brands on the cheap and pass them off as discounted designer stock in store.

    Very crooked

If you're going into TK Maxx with the sole purpose of finding designer brands, you're only kidding yourself. I just see it as a slightly posher Penneys to be honest. Still though, I've found some really, really nice stuff and at decent prices. Some great men's shirts in there in particular I find if you do the hunting.

That dispatches program was a revelation. A recap for me would be: You see a Palph Soren jacket in Black Tommies for 300 euros that you really like but can't justify. See the same jacket in TK Maxx and snap it up for 150 euros. After a while you think its not really wearing that well and a couple of buttons on it are threatening to come off.
According to dispatches it turns out you bought a lookalike version of the product you saw in black tommies - Palph Soren made it allright, but with different materials - it's cotton Vs Wool and the buttons are Bakelite vs Tigers teeth etc. etc. and TK Maxx have had Palphie manufacture the lookalike product to it's price. Dodgy moral of the story - you're going to get fed up of the feckin yoke after a couple of years anyway so "TK all the way"!

A wee tip for you all, stuff sold in that shop and TJ Hughes are items that have not sold elsewhere and are rejects/used items.

The majority of the stuff TK Maxx sell is past season, e.g. the same stuff that would be on deep discount (possibly more of a discount) in the original retailers if they'd ever actually taken it. To add to that there's discontinued stock - e.g. they sell a huge amount of Bench underwear, which Bench have completely dropped as a product line. Seconds wouldn't make up much of it at all.

The atrocious physical condition of the shops (Letterkenny being an honourable exception), stock thrown all over the place mainly, would be the main reason I don't often darken their doors anymore.

Only mugs is it? Get off your high horse. They have nice clothes at reasonable prices. Regardless of where they come from. Who are you to call people mugs.

I don't think he means you'd have to be a mug to shop there just that most of the stuff isn't a bargain. The stuff is generally decent value but there are nowhere near the savings they claim. The RRPs are inflated and a lot of stuff is made for them with the end price they charge in mind.

In reality it's layout resembles a really expensive charity shop...aside from the charity that is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,355 ✭✭✭cruhoortwunk

Handy for cheapo kitchenware. I woldn't even consider buyin clothes there, it's all gawdy, 4 years old, oversized **** that can't be sold in a proper shop. Bit like the outlets in the US

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭BionicRasher

I have bought shoes and cloths in there that are perfect and are at least 30% less expensive than the other shops in town. The TX Maxx that I shop in is always clean and well stocked. I have found a lot of good bargains in kitchen and household departments and as for toys its a great place to shop for gifts and toys for kids etc. I have gotten things that are cheaper than online and with the added comfort of being able to return them to a bricks and mortar shop if needed.
People should wise up and realise that not everything is a massive bargain in there but its a damn sight cheaper than other shops for some crap T-Shirt made in a dive in some poor country.
In this day and age we should be embracing the choice we have and not begrudging everything. TK Maxx aint the worst place and it enables me to save a good few bob compared to some of the massive high street prices around

I get scented candles and nice notebooks in there and they're brilliant for those. And their home-wares department is pretty good as well. I'd also buy the occasional a pair of shoes in there too, if they're worth it.

I think the main thing with shopping there is that you need to ignore the "RRP" on the ticket and just decide whether the price they're selling it for is actually worth it or not. And even though it sells itself on being a "designer" discount store, if you're just buy into something for the perceived "discount" you'll lose every time. Its decent for what it is and as long as you're realistic about what it is you're getting for the price you're paying you'll be fine.

A lot of the practises outlined in dispatches programme weren't unique to TK MAXX but were also common in shops in outlet villages, as stated in the latter half about the programme.

My dad, even though he actually loves rooting through things in there, calls the place a "big carboot sale", as lot of the stuff is odds or broken. I don't really understand the snobbery about shopping there. Sure, its a discount store but is it really any different to shopping in Penneys or an Outlet Village? My (future) in-laws are awful snobs about the place, won't go into one and laugh at me for shopping in there. :(

They are mugs. Century 21 in the states have been up to this for years and it's a known fact this store operates the same policy. Yeah you may get the odd bargain here and there but the idiots picking up some designer shirt or whatever with an original price tag of 300 quid on it and they think they are getting it for 50  yeah like I said mugs.

    Dispatches show

Oh that'lll be accurate then, just like they were when they ran the program about ryanair being unsafe.... against the FACTS that it is on par with the safest airlines in Europe. Dispatches = "The Sun" of tv programs.

I won't hear anything bad said against TK Maxx. They had Doctor Who figures for €5.99!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭nightrave

Half of my clothes are bought in TKMaxx. I don't care if it is past season or current one. Or if it is season of 2009. If I like it, I am going to wear it regardless of the season. I've bought tons of my favourite Diesel jeans/pants for 25-45Euros. I know the original price was not, what RRP says (199-250Euros). I know they were about 120, but that is still a bargain. I am happy, shop is happy and the economy is happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,083 ✭✭✭juneg

My teen loves the shoes in there. I like to root around and find something unexpected. I have never in my life been into"labels" as I just thought they were all made in the same sweat shops in SE Asia.

But I dont like sharp practise and selling knock off clothes while pretending they are something of higher value is very crooked.

Never seen anything remotely considered a bargain in it, even any clearance stuff

TK Maxx is Penney's for people who haven't quite gotten around to wearing pyjamas outside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,226 ✭✭✭Stallingrad

Exposé recently pointing out that many of the brands in TKmax are made by the company, they stick on some fancy label and a RRP of €200 marked down to €70, when it was never sold by anyone other than TKmax and never at the full RRP. Some occasional bargains but I think the place is a bit of a joke.

You can get some great nail polish bargains in there and I love their kitchenware section, but most of their clothes are mank.

They sell dresses for little girls that look like something out of toddlers and tiaras! Ruffles and sparkles everywhere!

My sister got a gorgeous baby blanket in there the other day for 12 quid, it allegedly had an original RRP of 60 quid! yeah right! It was a bargain at 12 though, really soft and nice quality.

I love TK Max, although yesterday I was there and noticed those fake brands like something Copenhagen etc. Before I might buy it, I wouldn't now as I think it is overpriced.

However other stuff is quiet cheap, although it might be lower quality.

Went to Dunnes after TK Max and when I saw their prices I thought it's a joke. 15 euro for Dunnes T-Shirt .. you can get nice Nike T-shirt in TK Max for 9 euro.

I am the same. I never look at the RRP when buying stuff there. I find it good for good for basic knit wear, the odd dress for a wedding, work wear, scarves and leather handbags. I buy because I like the items rather than the brand etc.

My nearest TK Maxx is well laid out and clothes are divided into type and size so browsing is quite easy. One of the things I like about it is at a wedding etc you are unlikely to see a person wearing the same thing.

Also the kitchen section is good.
