    My usual rules:

Don't buy it if you don't want to play it right now, buying for some future date means you will most likely never play it.
Don't buy it just because its €40 off of €60, you are still potentially wasting €20, not saving €40.

    Bah humbug :pac:

I'm not moving this to the Steam forum. The steam sales are too big of an emotional event for gamers that it should be in the main forum :)

It's gotten to a point where i own most of the games on steam i'd be interested in (and then some) that said ive thought that before the last couple of sales and still ended up buying a few things anyway.

And as if they're getting ahead of Steam, I'm being tempted by Tales of Monkey Island on gog for $5.24 and Gone Home on Humble Store for $4.99.

    Hmmm....

I think the most important piece of sale advice I've learned from the past is to appreciate that it's 2 weeks long, a lot of the deals will be repeated and it's better to sit on your wallet until the 2nd week so you have a better perspective of what you want.
With that approach though the first few days of it will be difficult. :p

    Hmmm....

Gone Home is a great wee "Game". Worth 5 dolla anyway.

There is no point lying to myself and saying I am only going to buy things I need or I have enough games to get through. Every sale I last no more than 4 days before I go oh look a deal !

I have had my eye on some games I want anyway so if they come up I'll get them. Like the Day Z stand alone & Batman origins.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,769 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manach

A plea. If you value spending time with family at Christmas, resist the urge to get X-Com. :)

Might be on the lookout as well for a decent co-op, as just finishing up Borderlands 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,893 ✭✭✭Canis Lupus

The last one, whilst only a minor sale had nothing that interested me, this one, bar Dayz standalone I can't think of anything I need or want. Naive but I think I'm going to get away from this one unscathed.

I got a very limited list of things I want to buy; XCom being the one I'm pretty much guaranteed to buy as it drops to 5 EUR (due to watching play videos on Youtube which clearly means I should not buy it or something); I'll probably pick up some expansions with that.

There are also a couple of other games I expect to go down to 5 EUR (they are "okish" reviewed so not paying more) and my big hope would be some type of Borderlines 2 package with DLCs (with out DLCs I'm not interested) at big discount (GoTY style ideally).

Having said that seeing how I bought nothing in the last steam sale (Halloween) I doubt I'll be going beyond 50 EUR total spend.

I don't have much on my wishlist. Final Fantasy VIII is a maybe if it goes below a fiver, which is unlikely as it's quite new. If there's a good deal with Bioshock Infinite and the season pass, I may go for that, but nothing else I'm really looking at.

You could get the square enix christmas bundle for 6.49 in the hope final fantasy is included in it but youll need to get it today i think.

honestly... no but that's not the point. There was a steam sale under a month ago. how are you all not sated yet

The best thing about having a laptop with a relatively crappy processor is that it means I do save some money on the Steam sale. If I had a beast of a machine, there'd be no stopping me.

Some people knew there'd be another sale coming up soon, so they didn't buy things they might have back at the previous one. To space out the purchases. Me? I'm just going to take the sale as it comes. See if there is something I'll want. This'll be my third steam sale, and while I've bought a lot of stuff, there's still plenty out there that I don't own that I'll be getting at some point if not at this one.

This was me. There were a few things on my wishlist that I figured "that might come down more at Christmas", or even "I won't get through what I have before the summer so I'll wait".

This is also me. Every time I consider going console there's a Steam sale which makes me go "I'll never get games this cheap on a playstation!" I feel like I'm caught in limbo.

Moved... Did Retro lie to us? :pac:

I bought Tomb Raider, 400 Days and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons already. All 3 came to about €12. Tomb Raider in particular is a ridiculously good deal. €5.84

Did I mention my brand new Alienware X-51 arrived yesterday and I hooked it up to the living room TV? Happy Christmas to one and all!!

Brothers is a game that looks interesting and I may get as well.

For the Steam sale a €15 or less Wolf Among Us or Walking Dead Season 2 pass will see me purchase. Maybe

The Steam xmas sale is a big event that might be more worthy of a place in the main forum.

That added to the fact Retrogamer said it would be left in the main forum for that reason is good reason to question why its been shunted off into smaller sub-forum.

I suppose a smart arse reply is a better explanation in your view though.

The Steam forum is here to cater to Steam related discussion:

Steam Sales, Steam OS, Steam Box, Steam Accounts, Gamertags, Steamgifts. Steam Sale discussion belongs in the Steam forum, that should be all the clarification anyone needs.

Firstly, this isn't a 'smaller subforum', it's a new forum established recently to cater to any & all Steam discussion. The Games forum is there to talk about just that, Games...not Steam Sales. This forum is still very new, & will come into its own next year when the Steam box hits retail shelves. Until then, we're going to do all in our power to ensure that it gets its fair share of the discussion that it was set up for.

Further to that, if you've any problems take it to the Feedback forum.

I didn't get much last time round, have a little more cash this time. Still, on my second playthrough of Van Helsing and I still have stuff from the summer sale I've not finished, so it's not like I've exhausted everything either.

Ok, firstly, apologies if I rubbed anyone up the wrong way with my post. The reason for the thread being moved is largely that, the reason for this very forum is to cover all things Steam related. Obviously Steam Sales are a big part of this, & such discussion doesn't focus on one particular game/s, making it no longer an ideal fit in the Games forum.

I appreciate that the Games forum is a busy node in the category, and up until the birth of this forum, catered to Steam in an ok-ish way. But Steam is getting bigger, & bigger...just this week we have a whole new operating system, Steam OS. Next year we'll have the Steam Box...which starts to move Steam from a mere way of buying games, to a psuedo-hardware platform. This means that before long, the Games forum was going to be filled with threads along the lines of Steam hardware setup & config, account issues, & all manner of non-games related chat.

So, logically, we needed to find a proper home, to be both fair to the Games forum, AND to Steam & its users. Hence, we have this forum. It is hoped next year, it'll provide a dedicated place to discuss all manner of Steam topics, whilst keeping the Games forum free of non-gaming chat. We're in the changover phase now, where Games is relinquishing the likes of Steam threads, so that they can be housed here.

For those of you who 'follow' forums, just subscribe to this forum as well as Games. Moving the Steam Sales chat here won't affect you in any way shape or form, it won't affect the Games forum which is busier than ever, but it will have a positive affect here in this new forum...where the userbase will grow & this forum will establish itself over the coming months & year.

So again, I apologise for rubbing anyone up the wrong way earlier :o

Also by having the Steam Sales thread here, it'll help get this forum more exposure as there are people who still aren't aware this forum exists. :)

You could do both, but it's probably sensible to try to stick to one. The Steam app lets you see what is available and buy accordingly. Being drunk and what falls in to accordingly might get a bit skewed.

So does this start tonight ?, im about to pick up Dayz. Dont know if i should wait... then again, unlikely dayz will go on sale since rocket is advising people not to buy it. and it would cause sever overload.

They nearly always start at 6pm Irish time. So I would guess if it doesn't start in an hour, it won't be starting today.

Due to my backlog, PS+ and buying a game for 10+ euro only to watch it drop in price each steam sale until I play it, I have had a rule for steam sales. Only buy games for less than 5 euro. The issues with this is I think "oh I only bought 1 game for 3 euro, might as well guy this one too" and my backlog grows faster :(
