The ever growing trend of people taken "selfies" why???

Whats with this new growing trend of people taking selfies of themselves & posting them up on Twitter & Facebook? Its ridiculous when you think about it. I dont understand why people feel the need to do it, if they are humerous then fair enough but when you have people posing for selfies & then adding filters & effects to enhance their looks & then posting them up on social media craving likes & retweets, its really bangs of desperation for attention & in my book is really shallow

Im not being a fuddy duddy but even the idea of Snapchat is stupid, i signed up for it after hearing everyone singing its praises and now im being bombarded with photos of my mates posing with a fork & the message "just about to have dinner" or a picture of a pint & the message "out on the beer". Call me a Negative Nelly but i couldnt give a sh!te what your doing. As i said if its something funny send away but all these selfies & posing is pointless..even Barack Obama is at it..cop yourself on lad! I know i sound like a moaning Michael but im far from it

Is this something you do & why do you feel the need to do it??

Just say no to 'selfie' culture, and especially the word 'selfie'.

Really good comic strip here that sums it up pretty much.

I didnt ask how i solve the problem of receiving them, my question was why people feel the need to take selfies in the first place

What I find funnier is people who buy phones with high quality cameras on them, then cheapen and reduce the quality to shìt by running them through rank processing apps like Instagram.

Even worse when you have a DSLR camera, you might as well rub piss-coloured vaseline on your lens.

    'Taking'.

    That is all.

...why people feel the need to take selfies in the first place

    Because it's fun.

The ever growing trend of people taken "selfies" why???

Self absorbed, "Me, Me, Me" culture combined with a herd mentality.

    Because it's fun.

Its about as much fun as being slapped in the face with a wet fish..sky diving is fun, taking a picture of yourself posing is cringy

Some people just don't give that much of a sh*t if someone else takes a picture of themselves.

I got 99 problems but selfies ain't one.

To show everyone how much fun they're having on a night out obviously! Instead of enjoying their night and having conversation they take 457 pictures to show everyone on Facebook instead.

Selfies have been around since Polaroid cameras, get over it.

If people on your FB feed or Twitter timeline are hogging it up with selfies then either unfriend them or unfollow them.

    News feed settings.

Making sure even stupid people see only what you want to see so I don't have read you moaning about Your friends on Your social media.

people who are constantly taking pictures of themselves and uploading them onto social media sites are just simply looking for attention. No doubt, there's more than a hint of narcissism involved too.

    Look at me, aren't I gorgeous/crazy/interesting/mad/popular.

Agreed, we are all different & have different interests but what is exactly fun about taking loads of pictures of yourself with various posses & then posting them on facebook? Im all for taking photos on holidays or when out with mates, can look back on memories but selfies are pointless & sad in my opinion

    Okay.

I normally dislike posting images but in this case it's perfectly suited.

I'm not into it myself but I don't see the problem. Especially if you are a nice place (for example while travelling) and don't have anyone else to take a picture of yourself or yourselves. Really don't see why anyone would get their knickers in a twist over it. Seems like moaning for the sake of moaning.

"Look at everyone else, they're one big herd, but I'm different, I don't follow the crowd, I'm awesome" is what I gather from most posters on this thread, which is funny because if most people are opposing something, then maybe they are the herd, not the other way around.

When I was a teenager, a "selfie" meant something totally different than it does today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 750 ✭✭✭Ashbx

I deleted my facebook because I am sick of the crap people put up. The whole thing is just a competition with people who had a better night out, who has more friends, who has the most photos up! Its a bloody joke! I would be mortified to put a picture I took of myself up! People have no shame these days! Go out, and get some real friends to take your picture instead of desperately taking one of yourself!!!!

I'm pretty sure it's got a lot to do with the 'sleb' culture.

I reckon a lot of these people, especially the ladies, are in some way transposed to a mini celebrity kingdom, where they are princes and princesses.

I've seen some of these on FB, they're not selfies but they look professionally done.

Like they go to a pro snapper and get the full makeup and hair etc to put on their 'profiler'.

It's 'Hello' magazine for the masses.

    Stunning hun.

Oh totally agree! I was at my christmas party on Friday and one of the girls was updating her status WHILE at the party!! Why not enjoy the night and post whatever you want the next day.

I'm with ya OP. It pi$$e$ me right off...

I was out Sat night for the first time in ages and the amount of silly girls taking selfies in restaurants. Posing, preening... It drives me nuts.

I can't stand the vanity. Taking photos of yourself in bathroom mirrors - yuck.

    The duckfaces are even worse.

I worked with a girl who is in her mid 30s and by God did she pose. She was doing blue steel to try and make her yes bigger and cheeks plumper but in the end she looked like a stoned chip munk. Thing was - she was a pretty girl but everyone laughed at her. Sad

I have been known to take the very occasional selfie

If I'm on a night out, looking my best, why not preserve the moment for posterity?!

Taking a picture of yourself isn't a new thing. People take more of them now because they don't have to worry about wasting film and paying to get their pictures developed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,657 ✭✭✭✭road_high

I think it's very vain. Can understand the odd one or two for your facebook profile (bit like a passport one in fairness) but some people have pages and pages of pics just of themselves in different poses/clothes. It's a bit sad.

It's basically what people do when they wanna fish for a few likes. I'm only 23 years old but I can imagine society nowadays is awful compared to previous generations - all this attention seeking, selfie taking and people with their heads buried in their smartphones most of their lives. It's a bit sad really. It was amazing when I was travelling in Cambodia, the locals would be very lucky to afford a smartphone but they are so much happier and actually socialize. Most people's best friend is their iphone.

    I blame Narcissus!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭looking_around

I'm not sure if it's all narcissism. I would say there' s'more than enough people desperate to feel attractive/liked/worthy. And getting 'likes' is the latest 'feel good'.

I've taken a few selfies. All my friends are abroad and I don't get to see them often. So if I'm wearing new clothes or what not, i like to get an opinion on them.
I've also sold a few shots, leading me take more.

I do hate photos of myself and will avoid looking at them. It's not like i see the photo and go 'look how hot i am!'. More so it's 'i wonder if such and such likes this/do they like the new make up style' etc etc.

Tbh, more than selfies, i hate pictures of 'look at what I'm eating' and they're not from fancy restaurants or anything, simple stuff like roast and spuds. >.>

Maybe the OP needs the ranting and raving forum? :p

People have been taking selfies since cameras were invented, although they needed a mirror or a timer.

They've been painting or drawing selfies - if they had the ability - long before that.

...back then they were called self-portraits which was kind of quaint. It's this stupid selfie word that gets peoples backs up. It's on a par with twerking and totes amazeballs for annoying words.

I disagree on the word, I like the word. It encapsulates perfectly what it's describing. Oxford English Dictionary Word of the Year 2013 too. ;)

    A very good point.

People have always taken photo's of themselves somewhere or other, it's a perfectly normal thing to do if you want to retain a memory of a place or share it with someone.

It seemed to become 'annoying' and 'ridiculous' when people gave it a word - 'selfie', and then people got annoyed at it.

No it hasn't. I bet the English we speak is far different to what was spoken a century ago. Words fall out of use all the time, new words come in to being. Language is ever-changing. And 'meh' is a fúcking great word. :pac:
