Amalgam filling removal

So I'm thinking about getting my amalgam fillings removed and replaced with modern composites. I've had two in me for 15 years, probably from the bloody health board.

I was surprised to hear that my local dentist provides this service as I would have thought that only a specialist dentist would be prepared to do such a complex procedure. Several precautions have to be taking into account during such a procedure: such as ventilating the room, keeping the tooth under a constant spray of water to reduce the temperature so that less mercury will vaporise. It is up to a licensed dentist to make his/her own mind up on whether they want to put these measures in place. As my dentist doesn't do this on a regular basis, I can't picture her doing these to my level of satisfaction.

So basically I am searching for a highly skilled dentist who can take these fillings out for me. Also: has anybody got this done?

All old fillings contain mercury. So any dentist I imagine will remove them. Just avoid Eastern European dentists unless you want Hepatitis.

Has anyone ever done a study on the health risks of dental surgery ?

In the USA lots of people get CAT scans as part of checkups and tests, when the reality is that it's a rather expensive way to get a large dose of X-rays.

    www.columbia.edu/~djb3/papers/nejm1.pdf
0.4% of all cancers in the United States may be
attributable to the radiation from CT studies.
    2,34
By adjusting this estimate for current CT use
(Fig. 2), this estimate might now be in the range
    of 1.5 to 2.0%.

Sometimes the most harmful effect of somethings is the FUD, fear uncertainty doubt, that scaremongers have whipped up. Mercury in organic compounds is just evil and you don't want to be in the same room as them. Botox is the most toxic organic substance known and people pay big money to have it injected into themselves.

    Research the real risks.

My take on it is that it might be worth paying extra for non-mercury fillings for cosmetic reasons. I wouldn't go through the pain and expense to have them removed. And you have to take into account that amalgam fillings last longer than the resin ones so less visits to the dentist so less risks from dental surgery.

If they have to put you out under a general anaesthetic then there are stats on the health risks of that. It's routine but like CAT scans something to be avoided unless it's necessary.

Fillings also have a finite life, so maybe get them changed when they are due to be changed ?

What is needed is a vaccine against things like streptococcus mucans or whatever germs cause plaque. Or some sort of gene therapy / biotech magic that allows us to grow new teeth in the same way that all non-mammalian organisms with teeth can.

the most basic dental surgery has all those measures in place. complex procedure it is not. as you say, amalgam fillings will vapourise under high temperatures, so the only time they'll affect you is when you're cremated. i doubt you'll be too bothered then.
