    Hi all

Just looking to get a Log splitter, preferably Vertical but Horizontal would do too. Something good but nothing crazy in price. My budget would be €500 Max really. I would be cutting mostly Softwoods with lots of knots.

Any advice, good offers out there??

Im in Tralee. I saw 4 splitters so far. 2 Hortizontal splitters in Shanahan's Honda for €289, O'Neills for €325, and 2 Vertical splitters in O'Neills for €590 and a 5.5 Tonne Vertical for €399 in Heiton Buckleys. Not sure out of them what to look for....

    Thanks

I bought a 9 tonne off this crowd:
    http://www.hartnett-products.ie/h-splitters/product/7-heavy-duty-max-axe-9-ton-vertical-electric-hydraulic-log-splitter.html
Great machine although you need all the 9 tonnes as the softwoods are riddled with knots.
Another tip is to split after cutting as soon as you can as softwoods turn to granite as they dry out...

Are their particular things I should look out for other than the points below??
    • Motor wattage --- Higher the wattage the more electricity but better able to do heavy work?
    • Vertical or Horizontal --- Any major advantage of one over the other?
    • What Tonne is force --- The higher the Tonne the stronger for splitting??
    • What Length of Log it can take
    • What Diameter of Log it can take
    • Ram Diameter

Their all the things I seem to see listed when splitters are being advertised

No, there a new European law banning elbow grease

The softwood logs I seem to have are nasty to split. Extremely difficult to split, and thats coming from someone who likes splitting them the hands on way! :):)

If you cut your own timber, after a while you get the knack of cutting logs so as to keep them easy to split. Keep the knots near the cut and keep the logs short. The sooner you split them after cutting the better too.

    Why electric?

Have not heard great things about the running costs for them.
That said we have a handy little electric like this http://atkins.ie/gardenmachinery/product_info.php?cPath=246_326&products_id=1240

I hired a contractor with a tractor splitter only last week and we split got through a hell of an amount. It was a mate rate though but guess €250/day? would not be far wrong. Well worth it IMO!

Vertical seems to be the way to go to me.

Vertical seems to be the way to go to me.

Vertical seems to be the most recommended. Approx 300 euro seems to be the typical price for a 5--6 tonne Horizontal. Nearly double that for a good Vertical. Is the tonne and motor wattage the most important aspects for being able to split?

Tonnage is a measure of the force the ram generates. Its basically the hydraulic pressure acting over the area of the ram of the cylinder. A 3 tonne splitter for example would generate a force equivalent to 3,000 kgs.

Wattage is a measure of the power requirements in Kw.

Tonnage and Wattage are different but are linked by the speed at which the splitter operates. For example if two splitters were both rated at 3 tonne but one had a Wattage of 1.5 Kw and the other was 3.0 Kw, you would expect the 3kw one to work at approx twice the speed.

On Safety - make sure the splitter is CE Marked. It should be safe to use then. It should also have 'Two Hand operation', so both hands are required to operate. You wont take the fingers off yerself then.

    Vertical, 3kW, 9 tonner.
Electric is a great job in that you can set it up in a shed and tip away whenever you get a chance
Spruce and other softwoods are impossible to split with an axe, you've to put a value on your back, wrists, shoulders etc...
I challenged a few mates who were sceptical and all were surpirsed at how difficult it is.
I've split 50m3 over the past year with mine and no issues at all.
Not really feasible to get some one in on hire, it takes the savings out of the wood.
Another great job is the x head on the log splitter, it splits it into 4...

I know someone who says electric logsplitters are a waste of time and also "you get what you pay for" meaning that unless you are willing/able to spend €1500+ you won't be getting much in the terms of time saving or back saving.

Surely you must have a local farmer neighbour with a tractor splitter?

    Whereabouts in Kerry are you?

oul lad got one off a crowd called gwaza - horizontal e350. was skeptical using it but breezed through rings that i'd given up on years ago with the hatchet!

Have one of these too have set up in shed so can split away any weather.Father is nearly 70 and keeps 3 houses going with timber using this and splits softwood and hardwood knots and all.Only problem is keeping timber in front of him.

Anyone ever make one that uses a hydraulic Toplink to split? Could slot the Toplink in and take out when finished. Have table adjustable. Would there be enough stroke in it?

In Tralee, but the most of the wood would be in Waterville. Would like to have the piece of equipment myself, rather than hiring a splitter €600 euro tops I would pay for one.

Is it even worth your time and effort travelling from Tralee to Waterville, messing around harvesting and splitting then transporting back, for that expense you would be better off buying kiln dried almost.

Motor power v tonnage seems to be the way of understanding how strong the motor is for splitting

    Think this is it :)

    Thats the Max Axe one?

    Hi

Bought a Vertical Lawnflite in O'Neills in Milltown in the end, ccost close to €500 euro but is absolutely a dream machine. Very user friendly, no real bending ovver and extremely quick :)

I am looking at getting one of these also. (Did a search for Hartnett and found this post)

How did you decide on the 9 Ton
The 8 ton looks quite capable as well.
then there is the 10 ton...is that overkill
    The videos look well

I am all for electric the tractor always seems to be on something else pushing a button seems a lot easier than robbing the tractor off of another job
    http://www.hartnett-products.ie/collections/log-splitters
Hartnett give the impression of giving good backup .
