Not sure if this has been posted before. I saw a flyer in the local VRT office today, basically, Revenue is simplifying the registration system. There will be no more

    LK
    TS
    TN
    WD

from 2014 on it will simply be

    L
    T
    W

Sorry, couldn't find a better link

    http://www.nenagh.ie/news/article/single-t-registration-plate-for-tipperary-vehicles-next-year

    Makes sense.

    If anything there should be:

    DN
    DS

    As well.

In fact, that'd also help with parking, as shops could simply bar all cars with DN tags.

    :P

They should just get rid of counties altogether!

Co Waterford as opposed to Waterford.

as Lk is Co Limerick and L is Limerick.

Should be TY rather than T as its not a city. Otherwise they're just introducing a pointless difference to the system.

Limerick City & County Councils are amalgamating,
as are Waterford city and county councils and north & south Tipp.
    hence the changes.

I dont think I ever copped that Waterford and Limerick had two different reg plates :pac:

Imports registered before 2014 will still be able to use the old regs. They can chose what they prefer W or WD/ L or LK/TS or TN(no matter where in the county they Live) from next month.

Why is it that Tipperary had two councils and two reg plates? I always wondered that.

It stems from the days when the likes of retail/commercial rates and motor tax money was collected and allocated to the council that collected it. These days it all goes into the same pot and distributed, so no need for more than one council in any one country with the exception of Dublin.

Why Tipperary though specifically? I would have thought that if any county was going to be split north and south for reg plates it would have been more likely to be someone like Dublin, Cork or maybe Kerry?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

The county was divided once again in 1838.[15] The county town of Clonmel, where the grand jury held its twice-yearly assizes, is at the southern limit of the county, and roads leading north were poor, making the journey inconvenient for jurors resident there.[15] A petition to move the county town to a more central location was opposed by the MP for Clonmel, so instead the county was split into two "ridings"; the grand jury of the South Riding continued to meet in Clonmel, while that of the North Riding met in Nenagh.[15] When the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 established county councils to replace the grand jury for civil functions, the ridings became separate "administrative counties" with separate county councils.[15] Their names were changed from "Tipperary North/South Riding" to "North/South Tipperary" by the Local Government Act 2001, which redesignated all "administrative counties" as simply "counties".[16] The Local Government Bill 2013 proposes to amalgamate the two counties and restore a single county of Tipperary.[17]

    From wiki :p

    From wiki :p

There is still no easy way to get between north and south tipp.

I could get to Dublin quicker than I could get to clonmel.

By the way, a 'riding' is a third, as in Yorkshire is divided intoi three ridings. It comes, I think, from the Norse. So Tipp was divided into two thirds.

Cork had the option to use C and CK when the new reg system was launched in 87 but decided to just use C for both city and county, for once common sense prevailed

No they hadn't. City and county councils were amalgamated in 1985 while still on the old series.
It was always going to be C.

They don't seem to be amalgamated at the moment

There is only one Motor Tax office for the City and County though I guess.

Can they not get rid of this year, county, import crap and just stick to a simple base16 series?

By the time they exhaust base16, they would have issued 4294967295 vehicle number plates, then they can restart, or add a prefix etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

I'm glad you chose the simple series!

    Why base 16 ?

Why not use base 36 using 0-9 and A-Z ?

Can anyone explain why T is going to be used?

I was under the impression single letters were used for cities only.

Now maybe I missed it in the news or something and the Chinese are building a Tipperary city or is this simply another fcuk up?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

No I don't live in a city and my vehicle has a single letter reg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,455 ✭✭✭positron

Mixing letters I and O could get confusing with number 1 and 0, but I suppose it can be done with the right font.

PS: Although, even with Base16, you are talking some 4.29 billion individual license plates, which even if we register 1 million new vehicles a year, will keep going for 40 centuries... so... yeah, that's plenty right?

    corktina wrote: »

I never said you had to live in a city to get a single letter reg but I should have been clearer... Single letters were used for counties with cities only

    D Dublin
    G Galway
    W Waterford
    L Limerick
    C Cork

Killkenny didn't get a single letter registration in 87 because it didn't receive city status until much later

    So why the change?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

W and L were not used for counties with cities. They were used for the Cities. It isn't the neat system you think it is! (it's a mess in reality)

I think you are missing the point that they are trying to simplify the system

(seems too obvious to me that there are 26 Counties and 26 letters I suppose.... )

Waterford and Limerick city/county councils were given a choice to choose if they wanted to merge the registration plate the same as all other counties that have cities and decided against. I presume because it would have closed the county motor tax office

So you think they are trying to simplify the system :pac::pac::pac:

Like it not, technology is simplifying things like this and those Motor Tax Offices will close
