You have to go wherever the path leads, whether you like it or not. You can't go back.

You can go around in circles though.

    I'm good at that :)

I took a wrong turn many years ago. No idea how I ended up here; but it's not where I want to be.

Only problem is, I'm not sure what direction I'm facing.

Yeah, but every circle is a new circle, even if the direction is the same.:)

I've never thought it necessary to have "a path".

Wandering off on side roads is what makes life fun and interesting.:)

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
    To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

First they came for the socialists...

Bloody deep, boggy, rutted road. Rocks everywhere. Fallen trees. Deep muddy floods Me car is covered in dents. Some panels are missing altogether as is a door, its steaming and theres an almighty whine in the rear which wouldnt be so unnerving had I not lost drive in the front quite some time ago . The burned out shells I occasionally pass are beginning to make sense. F*ck this, Im taking the next turn off!:D

I always think of this poem whenever I feel unsure of the path I am taking :) and I've been coming back to it a lot recently. Thanks for posting it in this thread.

The question of the path I am taking has been plaguing my waking thoughts and haunting my dreams these past couple of months. I still have no answers.

my approach has always been one day at a time (or at best month) with the back of my mind thinking occasionally about where I'd like to be in a few years.

Doesn't answer your question. Very few people have a calling in life, in my experience.

I suppose everyday is a path in a journey that ends in death. Dwelling on the past and worrying about the future isn't really the way to go about it. Living in the present is how it should be done I guess. Harder done than said but I try to get to that way of living everyday. What gets in the way is the life that the world foists on me to survive. I would love to feel real freedom.

Every time I find a path, I walk it for a bit then get bored and head off down another. I think I've had more "careers" than pretty much anyone I know. I somtimes envy people who have a "path" they're happy to walk for a lifetime. Other times I'm glad I wandered so much. I got to do a lot and see a lot.

Is it where you want to go?

I don't know right these days where I want to go! I thought I did when I signed up for what I thought I'd do for life but it ended up almost destroying me in every way possible (literally) and for my own sake I have to close and end that chapter in my life. Gutting, Heart-Breaking, Hurting & has me in tears when I think back to the horrible situations I have fought through :(

I am working in a full-time job that I love as I meet so many people on a daily basis with their own life-stories & issues they are willing and longing to share and I love listening!

I am pondering 2014 big time lately and am currently making a plan to commence a new chapter in my life so changes will be a must for me. Kinda anxious and happy with that though :)

It only looks like a path when you reflect on life. We constantly evaluate our progress and make adjustments then re-evaluate etc. We live in a moment of feed back loops.

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don’t much care where--" said Alice.
"Then it doesn’t matter which way you go," said the Cat.
"--so long as I get SOMEWHERE," Alice added as an explanation.
"Oh, you’re sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."

I tend to get distracted by pretty things while I'm plodding along. Every time it happens I tell myself I won't do it again. Moving forward at a steady pace again though, and as ever a bit more determined about avoiding those dastardly distractions. I should probably get some blinkers.

Its like driving on a unfamilar country road at night. You can only see as far as the headlights allow but yet you still trust that there is a road around the next corner.

Of all the paths one could choose, the path to an honest lawyer is arguably comparable to running, blindfolded, through a minefield. Luck doesnt even come close to describing what itll take to see you navigate either!

I took a wrong path once, and stayed on it for nigh on 30 years, (foolish I know)
But, wasted years (and I don't use the word 'wasted' lightly) cannot be retrieved,.
So, for what it's worth, I would advise young folks to be careful about a choice of career before committing themselves.

Sometimes there is no map, sat nav, stars, and you end up on a road that you would never choose, but it's like a roundabout taking you back to the same spot over and over again. There are no junctions just the same old same old.

There's afew lines in Bazz Luhrmans The Sunscreen song about something similar. 22 yr olds not knowing what to do with their lives. Most interesting 40 yr olds still not knowing what to do with theirs. It's half chance. I'd love a holiday. In almost 20 years I've only been away from my job for 3 days for a family wedding. A 12 month holiday and a change from my current field when I return would be nice. Of course doing something like that in rural Ireland would have the gossip mongers on overtime. Apart from that things are fine.

I love the path I am on. Unexpected, I had tried a few. I don't regret the dead ends too much or the wasted time. Without those it would not be me. Make your own path, and remember to stop and enjoy the view on the path you are on. Life is too short not to live and love.

Many people are able to change career and the like, I suppose it is the fear of having to retrain, worrying about costs and the like, but it can be doable.

Is the the road I had planned HELL NO
Am I alright with being here, I have to be. Kids change life completely.

I'm fairly happy though. I am on a narrow little shaded path at the moment, finances are hard and we are really just keeping going, but I am hoping that it will be better soon. My partner is nearly qualified, so that should help us a lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

This is like that stupid interview question, "Where do you see yourself in five years time?"

Does anyone have a real answer to that? I've heard some people say it online, "Everyone has a five-year plan, right?". Um, no? I barely have a five-day plan.

I don't really take a path. I would liken it more to sailing on a river. Most of the time I'm just cruising along, going with the flow of the river. If I'm getting bored or I think I need to change, then I'll take the next fork onto the other river.

I have no idea where I want to be in the future, so long as my family and I are happy. Lack of ambition? Maybe. I find ambitious people boring and self-centered. At the end of the day all rivers lead to the sea, so you may as well chop and change as you go along rather than doggedly sticking to the same one.
