Help with arthritis

    Hi,

My dad is really suffering with arthritis and has done for several years now and it's getting worse and worse. He's on so much medication that he is constantly groggy and seems out of it and doesn't seem to have a good quality of life in my opinion. I'm really worried and the doctors just keep prescribing tablets but all these seem to do is make him groggy and the arthritis is getting worse and worse each year. He used to be really alert but now seems constantly tired and drained with no energy and sometimes slurred speech. He exercises and has seen a specialist but nothing works and the answer seems to be more meds, different meds, stronger meds....

I'm kind of at the stage now where I think he should come off all medication and try something different like maybe a natural remedy through nutrition or something but I don't know exactly what.

For starters, maybe I could get him to go see someone but not sure exactly.

Can anyone make a recommendation? A nutritionist or a dietitian or what exactly am I looking for?

    Any help much appreciated!!!!

    Thanks,
    JJ

As this is looking for medical advice it will probably get shut down, the condition is caused by either

    1 inflammation caused by diet
2 inflammation caused by immune disorders
    3 ware and tear
    4 any combination of 1,2 & 3

1 & 2 tend to effect several areas
3 tends to be more localised where there was previous trauma.

For 1 & 2 diet can play a major part. I would trial eliminating all forms of wheat for several weeks then dairy. Look into ways of making the body ph levels swing to alkaline. Research these points on pubmed.net.

I can really understand your frustration with the medical profession and your concerns on the pain killers.

Thanks for that. I'll do some research on the wheat and dairy free options.

Hopefully the thread won't be locked as I'm not specifically looking for medical advice but rather direction on the best place to seek a professional consultation with to get this advice. I'm hoping there is someone I can bring my dad to so he can list out everything he eats and does and get proper advice on what to eliminate.

I don't think that he will follow strictly something I research on the internet as he is an older generation and thinks his doctor knows best. That's why I want him to hear it from a professional!

Thanks again. Plenty to research there.

You could go see a few nutritionists and the might do allergy testing and stuff and you will end up trying a few different diets and spending a good few quid in the process.

If you going down that route do your research so you can discuss (challenge) them on what they are telling you to do. Being well prepared might help you reduce the number of sessions you need to attend to get to the point.

A very cheap and probably a faster route is process of elimination just suggest to take out certain food groups and see how things go. Start with wheat I have personally see people have remarkable results from this alone. It’s hard to do and wheat is a filler in so many things. Good book for you and your dad to read would be ‘Wheat Belly’.

Wish you the best and good luck.
