Lads, Just wondering about my general, everyday excercising. I'm not interested in body building but I like to keep fit.

I have about an hour walk everyday. My diet is all over the place but would an hours walk be enough to stay fit?

What does fit mean to you?

I suppose staying slim would be my main aim.

The majority of people can't outrun an unhealthy diet.

    Diet > exercise.

An hours walk a day will keep you fit enough to walk for an hour a day. If you want to be fitter than that, or stronger, or change how your body looks, you'll need to do something different.

You say being slim is your main aim, but if you are eating excessive calories, and not burning them off by your activity, you will put on weight. The simplest thing to do (but not necessarily the easiest) is to adjust your diet to match your activity levels.

Are we talking a leisurely stroll or a power-walk? In order to improve your fitness, you need to exert yourself to the point where you are running out of breath -- i.e. you can't carry on a conversation at the same time.

I'm not very active at all. My only fitness would be the hours walk. I'm 21 and about 11 stone 13 pounds on the scales.

How tall are you? Regardless, if you want to look healthy/slim, sort your diet out.

    Walking is good exercise:

Walking an hour will burn around 230 calories.

This says you need 1,900 cals or so to "live".

Multiply it by 1.2 if you're sedentary and you're at a calorie need of (1,900 x 1.2) + 230 per day if you want to maintain your current weight.
Don't include the 230 if you don't walk that day.

Now, you need to be able to measure what calories you're taking in. Use the MyFitnessPal app - it's free and very easy to use.

After you're conscious of what you're burning and what you're eating you can then start worrying about eating healthier or whatever.
You'll probably find yourself making healthier choices once you're watching what you're eating and the effect it has on your total for the day.
