Hi, im my friend is going breeding his Gordon setter and has promised me pick of the litter. Only problem is the pup will only be born before the next season 2014 so wont be ready for training til the next year. so this leaves me dog-less til 2115:(
I have seen a Brittany spaniel advertised working with all the bells and whistles only problem is he is 7 years old.

Is he 2 old?? or would he do me for the rest of this season and the next? and then would he help me train the Gordon? or should I keep them apart?
I can care for the Brittany after he is finished working. but I would like to get more than the rest of this season outta him..
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What would make you think 7 is too old?
(not taking into account why someone would part with a good 7 yr old dog)

Im always super wary of somebody selling an older dog unless I could get a trial of the dog for a few shooting days

dogs work hard it can take alot outta them! what age would a britt or a pointer work till??
Ya that's the other thing, why would someone sell a good dog?
although im sure some people are genuine!
    thanks for reply

Very valid point Jim. good idea getting him for a few days, even if they agreed to give him would be a good sign he would be legit!

I have a 11yo springer still good for an hours shooting that's all I allow her works away At her own pace probably the best ESS I ever had

She would never work for anybody else but me just be careful an older dog may look brilliant with the current owner but may not work for you

    Thanks

ive never shot under a springier, i would imagine they would be a bit fast for me:( I like the the setter/pointer cause they give me a chance to get ready. maybe when i get better with a dog i could try one.
    Thanks

    Go away really? :D:P

Seen a setter work well up to 13 for a few handy hours but if looked after I would be expecting 10 good years plus bar health issues.
I unless required have stopped working dogs beyond 3 hours a day & try to mind them diet & bedding wise to keep them in good order.

Lol! so they can work upto a ripe old age! good to know, many thanks

Have to agree 100% food and diet I always look after the dogs first after a days shooting even if drenched to the skin hot food and dry bed on shredded paper

Lad just wait for the Gordon or buy a pup now ,

If ya only get one season out of the spaniel what is the point in feeding a that someone else has had the work out of , including the medical issues u have with old dogs , it could become an expensive pet ,

If you had it for hunting all it life then I deserve to look after it but I think ur buying someone else problems

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭Martin1979

Another very valid point. Thank u. I probably should just buy a pup now!

I personally think it will be cheaper and more enjoyable in the long run , even if ya want to hold out for a pup of the dog your talking about it not the end of the world missing a season if you have the dog you want. .

Im gonna do that. I decided its best. Im going to look for a gordon pup now and get the other one when its ready. I have the room and lots of fields for them to exercise. The more I think about it its a no brainer!

here is my opinion on it , i think u should buy a springer/setter maybe 2 or 3 years old that is trained to a respectable standard i.e returning on the whistle, stopping on the whistle, walking to heel ,etc etc. the reason i say this is because the dog will probably teach u alot and at least u are starting as u mean to go on and u have a respectable standard of dog that u can train future dogs to reach. i bought a trained dog off of highduck here on boards and i never looked back ,he was a dream to hunt with and seldom put a foot wrong have some brilliant memories with him and he paved the way for my hunting ventures ,if i had not of bought him i would of prob made a bollix out of future pups ,.so basically buy good the first time and u will never settle for less

Thanks guys, im getting some great advice here. But im back where I started again. Was just talking to a guy last night that has gordon pups. But the semi trained dog seems like a great option at this moment! Just so hard to know if ide b getting a genuine one and that makes me nervous! Nobody wants a glugger!Charlie u have a great point. I like the setter as a posed to the springer. All my gang have setters or pointers and can u hunt the 2 I didn't think u could anyway? And I think the springer might b a little fast 4 me as I enjoy hunting at a little slower pace. But if you know of a semi trained genuine bitch anywhere pass me on a phone number.

As I said in pm bud a pup with that background and quality would set you back 4-5 hundred so for a 13 month trained dog it not Huge money
