You should have put neither down as an option on the poll.

I was talking to the oul fella about the IFA agm last night. I remarked about the number of people who came in and voted and just left, some of whom I was surprised were members. "Were you not thinking at all" he says when I said who had just come and gone. Then it struck me they were all related to one of the candidates:rolleyes:. Bloody expensive vote.

I thought about it but the reality is there will be a new president. Disaffection with politics and trade unions and lobby groups like the IFA is already plain to see.

Many at our AGM refused to vote because they were dissatisfied with the representation that they received over CAP. "Misrepresented" was the word used by some!!

I'm surprised because this was the option I ticked:

I thought it would be better if people voted blindly and only saw the result when it closed.

It's an issue isn't it, how best to register dissatisfaction. Stopping your sub would be a more powerful signal. I like how the Italians do it, they elected an ex-porn star to the parliament a few years ago in protest :)

I understand that but by not voting you are on the outside looking in.A bit like people whinging about government and they don't vote.its what I always ask did ya vote,if answer is no they didn't then there is no point in listening to them if they don't take part.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,761 ✭✭✭✭RobertKK

I was canvasssed a few times, didn't tell them I would refuse to vote over the CAP, where it was protect those on high payments, while making out those on lower payments were somehow inferior farmers.

As far as I could see, it would make no different to who I vote for, it was not a general election, local or MEP election.

The IFA top people are all the same, didn't want to waste petrol on them.

I met both candidates and told them what I thought. That there was a huge effort put into SFP while Pillar 2 was almost forgotten. That the pull out showing destocked hill farmers +327% in SFP was a F*CKING disgrace and something a lot of people are still angry over. That the problems hill farmers have brought to IFA in regards to the sector have been largely ignored & forgotten as soon as said. And a good deal more.

As JDI said, there will be a new president. I have a say so I'll have my say, while also directly telling them both the above.

I've been trying to figure out who is farthest away in policy from John Bryan, think I have that figured now and that candidate will get my vote anyway, who the branch will vote for I haven't a clue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,422 ✭✭✭just do it

Looks like the branch got over 25 votes last night (after plenty phoning around) but I don't know which way out went.

We had over 25 as well. Pretty certain which way it went as one of the candidates had 25%+ of the vote before it started based on family connections. I could be wrong about how they voted but I'd be surprised.

Go on, spill some juicy bits. Expecting a big turn out at our AGM, am going to sit well off to the side in case of missiles :D

Basically the IFA media report of a meeting up those parts on CAP during the negotiations didn't reflect what happened at the meeting.

Has anyone started a book on this yet? :D

Heard one of the candidates has been in this area twice in the last week.

I hate politics, but I love elections

I don't know, none of them called to my door anyway. One candidate was at the mart twice and was canvassing around the area today. The other candidate just came the once to a small group and gone again, AFAIK.

Exactly, if you didn't farm the premiums or buy higher entitlements, you were according to the IFA not a productive farmer, in their view the best farmers were premium and subsidy farmers, and they went out of their way to protect them.

Tomorrows farming Indepent should be interesting:

    From FI facebook page.

"Small farmer revolt against IFA leadership
Small farmers in the west are refusing to vote in IFA elections in protest over the organisation’s leadership on CAP reform, writes Declan O’Brien"

We're about as West as it gets and I'm about as small a farmer as there is. Have got various texts and calls from the two candidates and we have the, I guess his title is Connacht VP at our AGM tonight. Have also met both candidates in person locally.

We must be a squeaky wheel.

Or just sick of the committee work side of things?

There is, I believe, a lack of fairness on much lower levels than national.

It's my belief every farmer should have a chance to earn a living from farming, every farmer, or indeed anyone with the wherewithal to acquire by whatever legal means the raw material necessary for the business of farming. That chance should be based on fairness as in based on what people own/rent.

I don't believe that belief is shared. I'm fed up to the back teeth of everything being based on historical aspects, which are what got certain farmers stuck in the bad positions they're now in.

The same few are looking out for no. 1.

Nationally, one figure offered to help me with a situation and did nothing. Did nothing for others also. Some in IFA stopped a rally being held in the West this week on 50-50 co funding.

    Now. With. All. That. Said.

There are still some good aspects to IFA. Maybe too much politics in it for me to stick it out.

I will probably cop flak for the above locally. Don't give a sh1t today to be honest.

    [MOD]

As voting in the 'real' election is ongoing, I've reset this poll to end AFTER the real one.

Existing votes still count, but it's still open to anyone else to vote if they wish.

I don't see the problem with this poll Rovi. With real elections such polls are run up to the day of voting by numerous different bodies e.g. redstar. The results of these are available to the voter on the day of voting. I'd be disappointed with anyone that might have their voting decision swayed by an internet poll such as this that is quite unscientific and wide open to rigging.

Are you going up to it?

Great night for John Bryan in Cillin Hill last night, between 1100 and 1200 were at it
There must have been huge support from his county to raise enough funds for his campaign plus have that celebration last night.
Enda Kenny was speaking and gave farmers and farming great praise, so hopefully he puts his money where his mouth is in relation to
    co-funding

I meant that the county raised funds in 2009 for the IFA election and had enough left over to pay for Saturdays party
