Xtravision new rental model: €10/7 days, €15/14 days, €20/30 days

I thought when they first came out with this last summer that they were trialing a new rental model, and now its official. For 7, 14 and 30 days you can rent two games/dvd's per night for €10, 15 and 20 respectively. Excellent offer in fairness.

This is not a time limited deal so this is in fact their new rental model.

Note: does not apply to vending machines.

It'd be a much better offer if Rental was for 2 day instead of 1 night only. So if I rented 14 dvd's in 7 days, as per the maximum, I'd have to go back 7 times in 7 days to bring them back.

I have taken advantage of the previous deal, and my store is happy to accept a phone call to let me keep the rents a extra day. I am not sure if this is nationwide, but a 1 minute phone call is enough - no need to make a trip back to the shop.

Essentially 20 quid a month, not really competing with the online services.

Essentially 20 quid a month, not really competing with the online services.

Their business model now appears to be 'competing' in areas with poor broadband. Meaning the Maynooth store is doomed now that UPC are fixing the black hole in the middle of the town.

I think you're right. I'm in Wicklow were the broadband on offer is pretty poor and any streaming of any decent quality is not really an option.

I find the new offers from XtraVision great for renting Blurays and watching in HD with 5.1 surround sound.

Agree it will be good for people lacking decent broadband. Some places which arent even remote have poor service where streaming or downloading isnt a practical option.

Netflix maybe only €7/month but in fairness you would tire of its catalogue pretty quickly - it really does not do new releases.

You still pay €4 for new releases on iTunes so it is really competitive against that which is really a better comparison.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

I think its not bad value for €20 is you want the best quality and sound on bluray.

But only if the store is near you.

To be honest, the whole one night policy seems ridiculous. They'd do far better with it on for at least two nights, especially for games. The only way I could ever see myself doing this would be if I lived really close to an XV and went in and took out the same game day after day until I was through with it. I guess that's what they want though. People coming in every day.

As for renting 2 movies per night for a month, there are only so many movies you can watch in a month really. The only reason this seems like an attractive deal is because XV prices have been extortionate for years... €5.95 to rent a new release for one night? No thanks!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

A 2 day policy would make more sense especially at the weekend and especially for games. Though I expect anyone would want a week with a game.

I'd prefer to watch older content than have to travel someplace to get a movie and only have the movie for one night. Essentially having travel costs on top of the subscription.

Most stuff on Netflix is 5.1 passthru in HD with a supported device.

Xtravision seem to be responding to customer demand. They are now advertising the €20 30 day Gold Pass as having 2 night rental validity.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

I think its moment has passed. They don't have enough of a back catalogue to make it worth while unless you haven't seen anything for like six months. It's too short for games. If you just want the latest movie the local kiosk is much more convenient. Though the kiosk would be better if it was two nights.

If you have good broadband get Netflix with a Smart DNS service like Overplay.net. Sign up to Netflix with a Canadian a\c for about €6/month and the DNS €3/month. The DNS service will allow you to switch Netflix regions. For example Netflix in Brazil has the Wolf of Wall street. Use a sites like moreflicks.com to check what region films are in and switch. Brazil tends to have the latest movies, the US for tv and Denmark for top list movies.
The reason I specify overplay is the if you are using a Samsung smart tv some of the other services will only enable you to watch US Netflix.
The DNS can be set on most devices but if you have access it is better to set it at the router.

For me to have to go to a shop and pick out a physical disk to watch a movie is out dated.

Oh how this model would have worked a few years ago. They missed the boat.

They were too busy looking for €5.50 for a new release for one night.

Also pretty sure posting how to bypass netflix restrictions with dns services is banned on boards

I stopped going into xtra-vision when they started charging €3 for a new release. And when their "new releases" were on the telly that very same week, they were that old. Long time ago now.

The only way i think its worthwhile is if u split the month with someone else. We got it on my dads account so we both could take out films and the new kidsvfilms well worth it. But its only really worth doing for a month on then 2 or 3 months off as not a massive range

Sometimes theres a movie that isn't on Netflix, and personally I like watching the bluray of some titles. So for those one off the kiosk is handy.

Not everyone has decent BB. Personally I find the parental system on netflix and how it customises what it shows you really annoying. I have it set for the kids most of the time. So if looking for other stuff it doesn't show up unless you search for it. They really need a better user profile system you can switch between. The NowTV is better as it shows everything, buy asks for a code for the age restricted stuff.

Netflix have introduced profile selection on the Web since Nov 13 but manufacturers are slow to update the app.

Its very poor. Which is why I said the need a better one.
I think its primarily aimed at different adults using the system not adults and kids.

Here we go again. Overplay is not illegal!! Just ask them..

I never said it was illegal, I said it's banned here. I think it's due to the copyright law that Sean Sherlock passed a while back.

Decided to opt for the €20 for Blu-ray's for a month. Had 6 out so far, and I think it is going alright. Happy to put down the €20 to get Blu-ray quality films for a month. Netflix or Sky cannot offer that via broadcast or streaming. Have a huge backlog of films to, so I think I will make use of it for the full month.

Frozen is an amazing film. 47 Ronin is not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,671 ✭✭✭GarIT

It's an alright film, Netflix offers most of their catalogue at the highest quality available so I don't see a problem there.

I'd never go back to xtra-vision though after they scammed loads of kids out of money and denied other kids access to consoles that they had paid for untill they paid an extra fee to keep xtra-vision in business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 198 ✭✭Admldj

I get an email most Saturday's from xtra vision, new releases etc ,about every 6 weeks they send me a 50% off a rental pass, I go for the bronze at €5 and go on a spree! 14 dvds catch me up on most new releases and sort the kids out too, sometimes rent a game out as well at €5 its well worth it, pays for itself on the first night!

I honestly do not see why anyone pays to rent films on physical discs anymore.

It is a million times more accessible and cheaper to just stream it off Netflix etc. Or download it. These are provably the same people who buy CDs still for €10 a pop.

Image Quality would be the core reason for it.

I am happy I watched Frozen on Blu Ray rather than stream a version bitrated to all hell

Its too little too late I think. I lived in Australia in 2005 and they had that model. It was something like $30 per month. You could rent as many movies as you wanted with something like a max of 4 out at a time. New releases had to be back within 2 days and old releases could be out for as long as you wanted.

So as long as you were paying the $30 a month you could take a movie out in Jan and return it in December. It started me off watching box sets. Realistically you'd only take out a few discs a month so you were paying more than you needed but it was a subscription model and they'd take the $30 out at the start of each month even if you'd taken nothing out for the month. And because it was cheapish you didn't bother cancelling it as it was handy being able to pop in whenever you wanted and grab a new movie.

Now 10 years later, after high speed internet, Netflix, great availability of movies on UPC and Sky, cheap movies in the bricks and mortar stores XtraVision try the same model. It was a great idea 10 years ago.

Bad Internet service. Outside of towns and cities you'll be lucky to get 1 meg.

And 1 euro per gig allowance is a steal.

    Thats who will use this.

I got one of these in march, my son was really sick so i rang them to renew over the phone and i was told i couldn't do that in any of there branches not just my local one, they gave me a fine too.I was in there yesterday and got the new pass because its now 2 days i can keep the dvds for.
our broadband here is really crap or else i wouldn't bother!

    A good deal.
The majority of the country is still unfamiliar with ****flix, let alone illegal downloading.

I volunteer teaching the elderly computers and most of them can't use a mouse so I think netflix is a bit advanced for them.

If it was 2 nights their income from the fines would plummet. I know a guy who gets this deal and he must be paying 50% more for fines.

Why would they want you in each day? If I owned a video shop I would be delighted if people paid up and took out 2 films for the month and never returned to bother me. But I expect the income from the fines with the single night trick far out weighs any extra staff & admin costs.

If they have poor internet connection would be one reason. Compatible devices another.

I use streaming services for movies and never go to xtravision but I also buy (digital) albums for a tenner a pop. Not sure what you're on about really. Some people like to have a physical disc and a tenner is around about the usual price for an album.

I would never go to xtravision again. When I did, I would always leave films back on time and never got fined. Then, xtravision decide to try and lure back customers by wiping clean all fines for persistent offenders but no offers for the loyal customers.

Used to stream movies but then moved to an area where I can not get a proper internet connection. 10 mins drive to the nearest xtra vision store so this is a great deal for me and people in similar circumstances.

In fairness the majority of the country maybe, but the majority of probable consumers no. If that was the case they wouldn't be struggling like they are, and they are struggling.

This sort of deal has come far, far too late for them. About 2008 was when they should have this, instead they continued to charge over €5 for rentals.

How do you mean? I think they knew very well how people would end up using it, get 2 items for one night, not bother returning and then having to pay 2 fines, very devious IMO.

Nobody is going in planning on getting fined, and I reckon when they do get fined they just shrug and blame themselves rather than see what xtravisions plan really is.

I know 2 people who get this monthly thing, 1 mentioned being fined, the other I know is frequently fined, but both keep going back.

Maybe they are copping on that people are copping on and so have changed it.

I think their Bronze pass is great value. If you went into the shop the odds are you would get 2 DVD's anyway, now you get the 2 plus 2 every night for a week.
