Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Santa Claus, and simply "Santa", is a figure with legendary, mythical, historical and folkloric origins who, in many western cultures.

According to a tradition which can be traced to the 1820s, Santa Claus lives at the North Pole, with a large number of magical elves, and nine (originally eight) flying reindeer. Since the 20th century, in an idea popularized by the 1934 song "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town", Santa Claus has been believed to make a list of children throughout the world, categorizing them according to their behavior ("naughty" or "nice") and to deliver presents, including toys, and sweets to all of the well-behaved children in the world, and sometimes coal to the naughty children, on the single night of Christmas Eve. He accomplishes this feat with the aid of the elves who make the toys in the workshop and the reindeer who pull his sleigh.

I'd say most people in the south pronounce it 'Santy' even it they spell it 'Santa'

I never hear 'Father Christmas' used here.

I switch between Santa and Father Christmas.
Everyone I know here calls him Santy and for some reason I find it really grating. It just sounds so...ugh.

I dont know what it is, the people I know that call him santy tend to be the type whos Christmas involves a new tracksuit and used to get a new games console but since dad was framed for armed robbery they stopped getting them and they now go visit dad in prison.

    Apt username!

Santy for me. Always associated Fr. Christmas with the UK and Santa with Coca-Cola and Americans. I think Santy is a nice hiberno-english compromise!

Anyone who makes judgement on the term people use with children for Santa Claus, is a tragic human being.

We call the figure that brings Christmas gifts Kerstman ("Christmas man"), though we link Christmas to the birth of Jesus only, so no gifts involved with that at home.
On the 5th of december we celebrate "Sinterklaas" , which involves a lot of gifts.

Would like to have been able to thank twice!!
I mean, seriously, do people really think that their ill judged preconceived and totally idiotic assumptions and their own snobbery translates to everyone who uses "Santy"?

    Christ on a bike

I use Santy and so do my children, not a skanger in sight ;)
