Irish Cities in 50 years time

    Any predictions?

If we hit gas or oil in a big way it could change things quite a bit (as long as we tax it of course)

What places are going to grow in relevance and which will decline?

I can also see a referendum to unite the country succeeding in the next 50 years.

Athlone would become a key border crossing between East & West Éire after the re-run of the civil war.

It will actually be a city. Athlone, 阿斯隆, will be the new capital.

Cork will be like Singapore, it succeeded when road bowling was banned, and does very well on investing Irish politicians gambling wins, and supplying arms to both East & West Eire

Hopefully skyscrapers will be allowed, and cities will actually start going upwards like most other countries instead of spreading outwards so much. I'd rather more wide open country space than some a better view of the sky in the middle of the city.

Not at all , Cork will be sold on to the highest bidder , probally a consortium of African pygmy's or maybe German businessmen as a holiday resort.

What ever happened to the huge development the Chinese were building in the mid-lands? Hotel, all sorts of business centres and a manufacturing plant?

If Ireland struck oil or gas I suspect another country would buy the rights and pay Ireland very little or whatever way it works. We'd get very little. Maybe a few traffic lights down the country.

Longford will be sunk in order to act as a drainage lake to cope with rising sea levels.

If Ireland ever strikes oil, we can assume that a certain willing country will come and "liberate" us.

Shannon City will have a million inhabitants, a thriving international airport and be twinned with Boston, USA (but they really wanted Shanghai..)
Tallagh and Ballymun will have 10-metre walls "peace for everyone else walls" surrounding them.
Galway will look pretty much like today, maybe one or two 10 storey "skyscrapers"
Newry and Dundalk will have merged into BT35.
The new capital will be Athlone after the Cork-Dublin conflict of 2023.

We will be goose stepping down Merkel Straase in jack boots buying sauerkraut in the two deutchmark shop.
We will obey all orders and any mention of GAA is strictly forbidden. Fusball will be the national game of the new annexe.

I would like to see a large city in Ireland, on the scale of NY or London. Dublin is a nice and realistically is it the only real city in Ireland along with maybe Cork. Waterford, Limerick and Galway are not cities, not even close.

Leitrim will have struck Garlic and have become the Garden of Europe - Drumshambo will experience a mini-boom due to its proximity and house prices there will rocket past the 50k mark, becoming a sort of "elite" amongst the back-
4rseholes of nowhere. Longford will be renamed Langfard and become the new capital, based on a boom in the demand for five-bar gates and generators. It'll be great.

    Irish Cities in 50 years time . . . .

    Pollution free air!
    Electric buses,
    Electric trains,
Electric cars, but no parking anywhere.
Crime free due to 100% CCTV coverage.
No money, just plastic/smart phone payments.
Dublin to have its own 'proper' Lord Mayor.
All pets banned on the City streets.
Beggars not allowed on the footpath.
    Water machines all over (chargeable).
Curfew in all Irish Cities after 11pm.

They'll probably just extend the perimeter wall of the prison to encompass the whole city and call it Limerick Gaol rather than Limerick City.

I've been to many cities in Europe and in the US that are smaller than Galway. Your definition of what constitutes a 'city' is a bit unrealistic. There are more small cities in the world than large ones.

A city does not have to be 'epic' in scale. Not every city can be New York. Besides Ireland does not have a large enough population to warrant many large cities at the moment.

Although in the 17th century, Dublin was the fifth largest city in Europe. It's growth was stunted by the Act of Union and later the famine. Ireland's population could've grown dramatically had we had industrialisation earlier.

Another? Sure We haven't even got the first one yet! All because of some endangered frogs, or bogs or something like that.

People will be living in dilapidated celtic tiger buildings - patched up and eventually retro-fitted with a thatched roof

Horses on the street being used for transport because nobody can afford cars anymore

People having lots of children again (like 9 or more)

The catholic church will have made a huge comeback and everyone goes to mass

    "Foreign stuff" utterly unaffordable

All the infrastructure falling apart. Moss growing on the motorway, broken powerlines everywhere, the cork to dublin train moving along slowly with paupers sitting on the roof, derailing at least once every journey

Lads selling petrol (or ethanol fuel) in 1 litre bottles to the rich who can still afford replacement parts for their falling apart Honda 50.

but at least global warming will bring some decent weather so it will be worth it mostly

Someone serial objector discovered some Limestone in the middle of a large Limestone area and some bog cotton in a bog. Amazing discovery.

All cities will be linked by monorail, powered by the incessant hot air coming from the mouths of politicians up and down the land.

Why monorail? Politicians produce enough hot air to power a standard two rail system. :pac:

Well done, you managed to find the question mark. Now what is your question? It always helps to put words in front of the question mark, it gives the recipient a clue as to what your asking.
