Sky reporting that it was a Eurocopter EC-135 T2 - the same aircraft used by the Garda Air Support Unit if I'm not mistaken.

Judging by pictures I've seen it seems one, maybe two of the rotar blades aren't damaged and are still sitting as they should be with regards to the way the tail is sticking up out of the building. With almost all heli crashes the rotars are first to go? and according to witnesses they said it 'dropped from the sky like a stone' which may suggest engine failure and the pilot used autorotation to land it quickly.. No choice but to land on the roof and it eventually gave way?

Time will tell, but it doesn't seem to be a high impact crash so hopefully all survived.

At least 6 people dead. With the rotors relatively intact, could this be a controlled ditching on the roof and it gave way?

    Gearbox failure?

they could have run out of fuel because there was no fire.

Not saying this post is related to the accident in Scotland, but this model had some issues in the past with the autotrim disengaging automatically. The company were asked to look into this and improve the design.

AAIU from the CAA in 2007 - Here

"The helicopter’s autotrim in the Automatic Flight System disengaged and the helicopter pitched nose-down. The pilot, believing he had a double engine
    failure, entered autorotation"

"It is recommended that Eurocopter review the design of the Stability Augmentation System (SAS) DCPL switch on the EC135 helicopter to reduce the likelihood of inadvertent de-activation of the SAS".

they could have run out of fuel because there was no fire.

Not necessarily Scotty. The EC135 was specifically designed with crash worthy fuel tanks, incorporating rubber bladder inserts. Same with the 145 and other Eurocopter types. They have proved their effectiveness on several occasions!

Oh and another question . How much is all this rescue effort costing and who is paying for it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 686 ✭✭✭DieselPowered

There is possible potential for a lot of police air support units who use this type to be grounded until they discover what happened with this heli.
Its not a good record for the Scottish police, this is the 3rd heli down in 20 years?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 10 salthilljouno

Anyone got any names and addresses of the 3 on the heli? , I want to post them up on some aviation forums

I would imagine the Scotish taxpayer is paying for it! And I doubt people are going to start complaining about emergency services doing their jobs.

Still want to know if they had ejection seats on the Heli .

Salthill, give it a rest. You know as well as anybody that Helicopters don't have ejection seats due to the rotor system!

Do these types of aircraft carry flight recorders?

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,575 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

    I don't think so

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 570 ✭✭✭EI-DOR

No the EC135 is not equipped with an FDR. The FADECs will provide limited information I believe!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,575 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

I took a photo of the helicopter last year flying over my house, looks like it is the same pilot who died RIP

That's a great shot. I seen Dave display the Chinook at the Air Tattoo a few years back. Phenomenal flying. Best helicopter display I ever seen. 20 years in the RAF and two wars under his belt!

My first posting on this and most important my sincere condolences to all those involved in this tragic incident .

On a previous post it was stated that the 135 may not have been fitted with a FDR .

Perhaps not, but as a police aircraft it would have been fitted with its own fitted for purpose police recording equipment anyway .ie Day-night camera and audio recording .

The FDR would only be of use to the investigators purpose of preventing further crashes in preparing a report on this anyway .

IF the UK authorities operate in the same manner as the regulations here , any fault or any negligence of behalf of the pilot or the operator, if there was any would be removed from the transcript of the CVR that would NOT be available to the public or the innocent victims of the crash and their families .
As here they will only get an incomplete transcript of the CVR IF there is any culpability on behalf of the crew or the operator .

Hopefully there will be a speedy and transparent investigation for the sake of all involved and they wont be left for years trying to find out why their loved ones were killed, not how.

Fivesixtwo, you make a good point and already there seems to be an attempt by the police to control the release of information judging by the lack of detail in their news conferences. One relative of a missing man is reportedly angry at lack of information. I'm not surprised. There is something odd about the way this is being handled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭fivesixtwo

Yes nothing new in that , same situation exists here .well proven at this stage .
