When I was about 12, I went to a Whist Drive in the town hall run by the Woman's Institute. I got top prize. It was meant to be a Christmas Hamper, but when they seen who had won it, they gave me a candle in a tin holder instead.

A sh1t prize, and a sh1t thing to do, but the lesson was invaluable.

My brother got me one of those LOTTO keyrings, the one with the little balls that move around inside and help you pick your lotto numbers. I was 14, I couldnt even do the lotto.

He also got me the Guinness Book of Records 1998. It was 2001.

2 of the worst Birthday presents I have ever got.

Won EUR200 in a work draw, gave it to charity.

Bought a ticket for a GAA club draw to win a car with 2 work colleagues (think it cost EUR 50 or EUR 100 for the ticket). The ticket before ours won the car, it was another work colleague, he got 20k for the car I think.

I was forgotten about one Xmas, the family were opening gifts for each other when it was realised that nobody actually got me anything :(

Didn't matter, I guess, all anyone ever bought me was just those toiletry bags with shower gels in them anyways. I must have about 6 or 7 of those bags lying about. :pac:

I wish they had some photos of you that day. You must have been disappointed. Priceless.

Worst present. A visiting relation gave me a bottle of water as a present. It wasn't even anything fancy, it was a bottle of water they took from the hotel on their breakfast table.

A mad aunt gave me a pair of socks for Christmas once, they were the most gaudy looking pieces of shít I ever seen. The worst was I was making fun of them on Christmas day in front of the family and put them on. I felt something sharp at the bottom. It was a toenail  :(

They were promptly burned and I spent the rest of the day with my feet soaking in a basin of Dettol.

Last Christmas my ex's mother gave me all nicely wrapped up a rubber squeaky pig. The tag on it said toys for dogs  evil

When I was a child, my school had a table quiz and raffle to raise money.
I got one of the winning tickets in the raffle but it was quite late into the raffle so everything good was already taken.
    I got a uniform......

    A school uniform.

I got a key finder (you whistle, it beeps) for my birthday recently. I'm kinda torn because I was shocked I got anything but jeez, what an uninspired present. I'm not know for losing my keys either, they're always in my pocket...

    Bird feeder balls...
2 massive cans of shaving cream (2 for 1.49) tag left on and 3 pack of jocks (Small) I'll have that shaving cream til I die, could shave a family of gorillas with plenty left over for next generations...

    Generally get pretty decent ones,
Hand out a few novelties but always with a main one as well...
If I'm going to a last minute party and decide to pick up a card, have to buy a pen as well and usually leave that in the card as well and buy them a drink in there... :)

Brother last year got Weightwatchers Flavoured Water (After Sell By) keyring and neon socks off other brother... Eventful Xmas morn.. :)

My uncle was coming home from living in South Africa around Christmas lastyear, gave me a present of a pack of 5 pairs of socks, I got more use out of them than any other present I've gotten in a while...

When I was about 16 my dad bought me a skipping rope for my birthday. That Christmas he bought me an electric nose hair trimmer.

I was pretty confused and dissapointed with both presents but several years later I still use them which is more than I can say for the other more entertaining presents I've received in the past.

My sister came to visit me a few years ago and the only thing she brought with her was a bar of After eight chocolate (not a box).

She handed it to me , I then realised that it was already open and about 2/3rds of the bar was gone.. "I got hungry on the drive down" was her response to my WTF expression....

BTW - At the time , she owned a newsagents...

When I was sixteen I did a FAS carpentry course. We all got a bottle of aftershave and a pair of socks which seemed to have been purchased from a pound shop.

Was on a training course in San Francisco many years ago, and afterwards we were given a gift bag. In the bag were a pair of boxer shorts with the companies name and logo repeated all over, even the women on the course got them.

This happened to me too. Sure the game looked interesting but I had nobody to play it with!

As someone with a beard, for the past 2 years I have been expecting someone to give me shaving related stuff. Thankfully it hasn't happened yet.

The first thing I ever won was probably the worst.

I was around 11 and we had an art competition in class which I won. Second and third place both received a religious icon but standing in line I was sure that as first I was going to get something fantastic.

Turned out first place was to say a prayer of the faithful at upcoming school mass.

Being ridiculously shy at the time this "prize" plunged me into a week of horror filled anticipation, not able to sleep etc. Turned out my prayer was in thanks for the gift of siblings.
    I'm an only child.
    Enough said.

A "Best of Gloria Estefan" video right about the time DVD were becoming common-place. After slogging around in a damp pitch and putt course and hitting the best score of my life up to then.

Seeing as we had a DVD player, couldn't even use it for w@nking material.

    Not me, but my brother.
This was about 40 years ago.
He used to be walking down town with my mother and everyday they used to walk past the toy shop.
Inside the window was a box with a picture of a train on it.
So he kept telling my mother he wanted it for Christmas.
So Christmas morning comes and low and behold, when he unwraps his present,he's delighted to see the box with the train on it.
Whoo hoo, a train! He yells.
Tears the box open and inside is just a piece of track and a box.
It was just the section for changing tracks!

I won an alarm clock at a table quiz :(

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,180 ✭✭✭Sunglasses Ron

I can't recall the worst I received, but I do know the worst I gave. A few years ago we had a Kris Kindle in my old job. More than half the job was foreign folk, a great deal of whom were awfully tight fisted, and so after a vote the KK spend limit was agreed to be around the, I s'hit you not, five euro mark :pac: (and that was amongst those taking part- a few even regarded this price as too high and declined to take part at all).

Now, why anybody reckons five euro can buy anyone a remotely worthwhile present for an adult is anybody's guess, the limit should have been at least 15 to 20, but I picked up a five euro alarm clock for the German girl whose name I drew from the hat.

She comes in an hour late the next day complaining about how she slept in because her new alarm clock had already died :pac:

Slightly related, I remember seeing Noel Gallagher on (I think) Jonathan Ross, describing how his record label bought him a Rolls Royce and Liam a top end Rolex watch as a thank you for the success of their first album

"It weren't no good to either of us. I don't drive and our kid can't tell the time" :D

A few years ago at Christmas, I didnt get anything from my brothers. Even though I got them Christmas presents.

The year after I just wasnt going there and I wasnt going to put myself out Christmas shopping. I didnt plan or want to get them anything. But one day before Christmas my mother tells me that my brother asked her for advice what to get for myself and my sister. Went out and bought xmas presents. Roll on xmas and what did myself and my sister get? Nothing.

I learnt my lesson after that. Since then, I get my own presents myself. I treat myself at Christmas. Screw that crap, waiting for others to get you stuff. If you want it, you get it yourself.

To be honest, if they ever do produce a christmas present again. I wouldnt feel guilty not getting them anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭DMcL1971

I don't drink tea or coffee, never have. A few years ago for Xmas my sister bought me a tea set, cups, saucers, teapot, the lot.

The following year she bought me tulip bulbs to plant. I live in an apartment with no garden.

The next year she bought me a jumper, size small, I wear an XXL.

She's only known me all my life, you think by now a few things might have sunk in.

I won a free flight while on a Ryanair flight once (from a free in flight raffle or some sh!t). I read the t+cs while still on the plane. I had to pay the taxes + charges on the free flight and I had to apply by fax iirc. A load of balls. I handed it back when I was getting off the plane.
