I don't under stand why you need to do the letter. Is it private land or what.

When applying to NPWS there is a section that has to be attached to the application showing the land owner giving permission to shoot the land and the section I fill in the Rifle and calibre size, if I 'am wrong I am hoping someone can put this right.

Ye if your applying for a hunting license.

But from what I understand if you already have a license you can hunt deer under this license providing you have land owners permission.

As OSOK said if you already have a deer hunting license you only need verbal permission from landowner to shoot other land not on the license but if you are applying for the license you need the letter it would probably need to be over 100 acres in total

You'll need a letter from the landowner giving you permission to hunt deer on his land. Letter needs to contain his and your names and addresses (obviously;)), preferably his phone number and the folio number for the land (he will have that). Landowner needs to sign the letter. We're well into hunting season now, don't hold out too much hope of getting licensed before it's over.

Ye npws will send you out a form. Fill it in with the land owners details. Name if your rifle caliber and billet grain I think.

Then on a seperate peace if paper written from land owners. The letter is prity much the same as you'd use for your firearm except you need the folio number if the land. To obtain the license you need 100 acres with deer on the land.

Send that of to the npws they will get a ranger to inspect the land and once everything is ok they should issue the license then.

    Tawny Owl,

If you copied the above letter (good letter, by the way) just correct the misspelling acres instead of acers

Maybe a stupid question, but how do npws know if there are deer on the land?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭German pointer

They know areas where deer are and if folio number is in the area they know there will be deer there. They also check land for signs including droppings and prints

Are there limits to how many people can use the same folio number?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 853 ✭✭✭Tawny Owl

I am not too sure on that maybe someone with a bit more experience of the laws can say, But on this land I am the second Person, so only 2 of us shooting the same spot.

Yes there are it is usually eight per 100 or so. But it can also depend on the land etc....

It's gas, cos I have over three hundred acres of permissions I reckon, but I take all my deer from just two permissions of about 6 acres each.

Think it might be more to do with the population of deer. Then as said before other factors can play a role in the decision.

I got the permission forms back today, but when the Famer returned the form to me all is on it is 62 Acres, I was onto NPWS, and I must find the other amount to make up 100 Acres, just want to ask where in the application does it say you need 100 Acres or is it there policy that this amount is needed, this has just set me back, and I am now trying to secure more land elsewhere,If I was a Famer with this amount of land only 62 Acres and I wanted to hunt it myself where would I stand there would I be refused a licence to hunt my own land because all I have is under the amount the NPWS have set out in the eyes.

Have not seen 100 acers written down but when speaking to them on phone this is the figure they give. Not sure where a famer would stand if he only owned 62.

Even when you apply for a shot gun you need to have a certain amount of land.

And the problem is if the 60 odd acres is in the right place you will have to much to shoot. Ah well.

Just play ball and get your license anyway

The 62 Acres is alive with Deer, and as you said too much to cover, but on one post here, the hunter had masive amount of land and shot most of the Deer from about 2 Acres, sure I will keep going at it for the moment, ;)

    That was me :-)

It's about 12 hectares I reckon overall, but I have permissions for near 300 :-)

I've taken 12 deer over the last 2 seasons all from just two small landowners. Part of the reasons is they are quite near me and I tend to go to those places on the cuff if I find I've a few spare hours unplanned

I know two spots that new applicatants got their deer licence for and there is hardly a dosen deer between the two locations. Some rangers are unaware that the areas I'm speaking about is dried up. I also know another area that has a reasoable number of deer on it and the owners ground has a total of 150 acres and the ranger belives theres no deer on it even tho the farmer has awful issues with crop and property damage caused by them. Also I know a licenced shooter that has culled over a dosen of them last seaon on this ground

Over the moon got 100 acres today from my shooting relative and will travel tomorrow to collect the permission letter, then off to fill in the form for the licence delighted this evening, now the ball is rolling for next season to shoot Deer.:D:D:D

If you write down the folio numbers for next year, some farmers prefer to just sign their names instead of digging out all their information each time.

    So I got told :D
