Yesterday: plan called for a 3 mile recovery. Had to do some self flagellation to muster up any sort of enthusiasm to get out. Got a moaney, grumbling & bitchin 5 miles done @ 9.23.

Today: plan had me down to race the Athenry half. Have been feeling fairly crap the last few days but was a bit better last night so decided to give it a go. Was a bit windy and humid and I really didn't know what sort of shape I was in as I think 13 miles is the longest I've run in training in about 5 months. Given recent meltdowns I decided to adopt a conservative approach and try and stick with the sub 1.30 pacers. This is a bit off my PB but the course isn't a PB course and I'm not in that shape yet anyway. Started out with the two Pacers and about a dozen others into a decent breeze. Felt crappy for the first mile but settled into it, the pacers were rock solid holding a very steady pace. A couple of miles into it I was drenched with sweat and I had a serious wobble around mile 4/5 where I dropped off the pacers and really started to feel ****e. Considered stopping but dug in and slowly caught the pacers again. The group was starting to thin out at this stage and by mile 8 there was only about 3 or 4 of us left. I decided to try and up the pace and struck out on my own, reeling in a group ahead and then picking off single runners. Felt ok until the last mile where the incline really took it out of me, had just about enough left to pass a Tuam club runner in the last couple of hundred metres. Happy enough with it although a bit conflicted as I probably should have struck out ahead of the pacers earlier but the wobble at mile 4/5 knocked my confidence. Feels like I'm getting some of my strength back and that'll stand to me later in the season.

Time 1.29:21 and 15 miles for the day.

    Splits:

    6.49
    6.49
    6.45
    6.58
    6.52
    6.42
    6.49
    6.46
    6.38
    6.37
    6.41
    6.41
    6.55
    [6.38 pace]

Nice run today TBL. Having the young fella down your neck of the woods the last few weeks has been an eye opener & has explained a lot of what I read on this log. Sent him off for a bit of culture & guess what he's off to tonight ??? A cross-dressing ceilí

You're making steady progress my friend, keep up the good work...

Have been feeling a bit iffy in the legs over the last couple of weeks, gradually getting worse. I'd get the odd sharp pain in the calfs while doing nothing and I'd even see them 'pulsing' involuntarily??? Shins at me too... Last few days can feel PF starting to flair... pulled out of the half to try and be sensible but not enough...

Bit peed off looking at updates on Belfast 24hr and watching some of the challenge galway and I'm hobbling along trying to get 6 easy in today.. Its just highlighting the weaknesses I have been told about and ignored.... Sorry for the hijack ☺

Tang is fairly motoring isn't he :D

    Tnx Marty,

Have you been to see the physioterrorist Trish!

Could be one issue causing a knock on effect, my glute medius issue caused my hips, groin, knees and foot to start acting up!!

    Anyway hope you get sorted.

Monday: plan called for 4 miles easy, was going to London so got this done early in the morning at north of 9 min pace.

Tuesday: plan called for 10 miles easy. Was flying back into Shannon so checked my little black book to see if I could arrange a date with one of the faster lads. No faster lads available so I got Bulmers instead :)

My date was waiting patiently on the other side of passport control and we drove and parked up at the Shannon Oaks hotel. I did a very quick superman change in the car and we were ready to go. Asked J if I could leave my key in his car and he opened the door, a massive bar of chocolate (I've seen smaller bags of cement) fell out and nearly broke my toe!!! Those sly bars of chocolate won't help with the sub 3 :)

We headed off on our usual route, chatting the whole way (at least I was, Bulmers ears were starting to smoke). 10 miles done in what seemed like a flash, thanks J, would have seriously struggled to motivate myself to do after a long day.

    10 miles around 8.20 pace.

    Today: plan called for 3m wu/cd with 3 x 15 mins @ 6.45 pace off 4 mins recovery.

Headed to Dangan to do this and got 3.75 very easy mile warm up done. Hit the big double pitch for the tempo stuff. Knee was starting to niggle at this stage. After 2 of the reps I decided to finish the session as the knee was getting more uncomfortable. It was a tough session but there wasn't much point in damaging the knee for the sake of another 15 mins. Calfs are very tight so I stretched them out and iced the knee. Long hauling it again on Friday so I might take it handy for a few days. I'll try a short gentle trot in the morning to test it out.

    15 min rep paces:

    6.39 & 6.45

    9 miles for the day

Yep and I didn't hang around for any idle chit chat after the physical stuff either, said "don't call me, I'll call you" :)

Yesterday: plan called for a 4/5 mile easy double. Got a very easy 3 miles done locally with no watch. Knee was still aching but no sharp pain.

Travelled to Dublin yesterday evening, was staying near Santry and decided to do another easy mile or two in Santry demense. There seemed to be some sort of race or time trial on in the park as there was a fair few runners doing loops of the park on a marked course with lap splits been called out by a timer. Distracted me enough that I got 3.5 mile done @ 8.21. The knee ache is still noticeable but didn't seem to get any worse.

Today: plan called for 7 miles steady. Was only 50/50 whether I'd do this as I don't want to exacerbate the knee issue and I'd only a short window to get it done as I'm flying to Dubai today. I iced the knee again last night and it felt OK this morning so I decided to start and pull the plug if it flared up. Ended up doing this a bit on the quick side. Knee is a bit tender and I think there is something causing a pull on the patella. Travelling onwards again tomorrow so I'll have an enforced rest day, and hopefully more icing and stretching will sort it out.

    7 miles @ 6.55

If it was between 7pm and 9 or so it was probably just club training night for Clonliffe.
I'm very behind on the logs, but you seem to be going very well and very well done on the half. Mind that knee!

Saturday: plan called for 8 miles easy. As I'd only a hit and run meeting in Dubai before getting on the worlds longest commercial flight by distance, I got zero chance to run.

Sunday: well I think it's Sunday, after spending 16 hours on a Boeing 777-200er from Dubai to Auckland, my body clocks all outta sync. Staying in a hotel on Princes Wharf and got a lovely room with a balcony overlooking the water. The plan today had called for 12 miles but given the travel and the knee issue I decided to dial that back. Absolutely beautiful crisp and sunny winters day here today, with just a little bit of cold in the air, perfect running weather. Hoping to stay awake till later tonight so got the gear on and headed off for some easy miles. Headed up past the Vector Arena, the cargo container area, past Hobsons Bay and out along the little wooden pier just pack Okahu bay. Stopped on the pier for a bit watching them fishing, stretching the knee and soaking up some sun before retracing my steps back. Plenty of runners, walkers and cyclists out on what really was a cracking day. Heading off now to get a late fish lunch somewhere overlooking the harbour. Auckland is class!

    8 miles @ 8.19
