I don't think it's free shipping to Ireland. They have promotions often, and say"Free Shipping when you spend xx", but in the past it hasn't included outside the U.S. - Saying that, it still often works out at great prices.

American Eagle also having sale - 50% off everything and another secton with further 50% off everything - http://www.ae.com/web/international/index.jsp

    And so are Forever21 - http://www.forever21.com/EU/Product/Main.aspx?br=f21&lang=en-US

I've 76 euro in my basket and it's charging me 17.14 for shipping. Did anyone get free shipping?

No. They never do Free shipping. That only applies in the U.S. and they leave it on to suck us in. (Still works out okay though.)

Thanks op, got a pile of stuff last year in this sale, quality and fit is excellent and everything's still going strong! T shirts in particular are fantastic, for only slightly more than the price of a penneys t shirt!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 136 ✭✭nostrils

The clothes look like clothes you could buy from dunnes or penny's for the same price am i missing something here?

I made up a sample basket for EUR 80 and including all postage , customs etc. charges it adds approx. 40% to the.basic price at checkout. But at least you know the full cost before u place ur order.

Just browsing on American Eagle - some good deals to be had but unfortunately, unless buying a good few items, shipping charges are a bit crazy. Had 2 items in basket and shipping working out at €36ish

Shipping is €36, but the the 50% off is a great deal. What's the story with the Tax & Duty? It said it's to be paid on delivery, anyone know how much customs or whatever will charge? Also seeing as it's an American website, would their medium sizes be the same as our medium? Or should i go with a small? Thanks.

There are conversion charts on the aeropostale website which shows european vs american sizes. Not sure about american eagle though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 652 ✭✭✭Hayezer

So around how much would you be paying for shipping? Still seems worth it unless its crazy price, would be worried for sizing though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34 subzero10

Not sure on the AE website...its the Aeropostale one which I ordered from and shipping was free once the order is over €70.

    You're missing something.

Their clothing is pretty high standard I can assure you. Can be quite expensive in some places too. Bare in mind they've slashed prices on that site.

Shipping was Free? Are you sure?

AE shipping drops when you add items to basket, also choice of paying taxes on site or at door. There's more information on an American Eagle Thread, but i'm not sure which one..

Forever21 deliver from Europe so no charges, they also allow you change items in store (Jervis SC etc..)

EDIT - Shipping is not Free
    PROMOTIONS & POLICIES

International orders are not eligible for:

For AE, Shipping is €36. The thing was it doesn't say how much Duties/Taxes will be, I was looking at stuff on Aeropostale, and when you checkout it adds the Duties tax to your checkout. On AE, it says to payed on delivery so that's why i'm not sure to order anything.

It is a good deal if you are buying a good bit of stuff. I have already ordered loads from Aeropostale (I think about €12 delivery there) tho so not buying enough to make it pay with the shipping charge!!
In relation to customs, I bought last year and had to pay courier on delivery - wasn't huge amount as far as I can remember. Aero are adding the customs to final checkout charge this year so there should be nothing left to pay on delivery....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

Just spent €76, total ended up at €112 including customs and shipping etc...

TOTALLY worth it though. I bought stuff from here last year, quality is excellent.

For the money I spent, I got:

    3 x boxers (super comfy)
    3 x polo shirts
    1 x pair of jeans
    1 x hoodie

Eldest daughter will be raging, a huge box arrived here yesterday from Aeropostale for her. Thanks OP, will get her to have another look tonight.
One of her hoodies was a very tight fit for a medium but the rest was fine.

Prefer to wait for the Hollister/Abercrombie sales after Xmas. Flat shipping fee of €15 even for a big order.

Just checking - if I buy items (around €120), will I definitely not be charged for customs whem they arrive? I see a charge for taxes and duties and very temted to buy as long as I don't have to pay any extra at all.
What does the package say with regards to customs?

Including taxes and charges at checkout, means you WONT be stung on delivery.

Sorry....just noticed there's only a fiver in the difference - Will go DHL

DHL, USPS or its local country affiliates will charge the recipient all applicable duty, taxes, and/or brokerage fees C.O.D. in the local currency at the time of delivery.
All taxes, duties and customs fees are the responsibility of the customer. Any tax and duty information presented in checkout are estimates for informational purposes only. Actual tax and duty is presented during delivery. Your local post office or carrier can give you information on the methods of payment accepted for the duties, taxes, and other fees collected upon delivery.

This is from there site..is there a cancel option option on orders cant seem to find it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 621 ✭✭✭Bebo stunnah

Surely you'd be better off paying for the customs here? It's only 23% of the cost & postage plus €5 handling fee. They seem to charge 40% at checkout?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭Rojiblancos

So if your spend is under €150 you don't have any duty to pay just the vat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,345 ✭✭✭jamescd

Ordered two weeks ago and picked DHL. It was held by customs for 5 days, they finally delivered it last Saturday and the driver asked me for another €28. Told him I already paid almost €40 during checkout for customs/VAT but he kept insisting it was US customs/VAT I paid for and the €28 is for Irish customs/VAT. Told him that doesn't make sense but he said the usual "Listen, I'm just the driver", etc.. So I told him to hold onto it.

Anyway, I just e-mailed Aeropostale and they sorted it out. Your man delivered it again the following Tuesday. So anybode else gets asked for more money, don't accept the delivery and just e-mail Aeropostale (or call if you want).

Is that still possible ? I ordered last year and the option to not pay in advance was there. But when I ordered 2 weeks ago as I said, I couldn't find it. Would have saved me €12.

Bought some of this gear on hols 2 years ago and the quality in the stuff is excellent as people have already said and it washes really well.

Looking to order from this site and noticed that if you select delivery to the UK (Parcel Motel) and keep the currency in USD you save about 20% on the prices being charged if you select Ireland & Euro.

Obviously they are creaming the exchange rate if you select anything other than USD which is common for a LOT of retailers (nice to see its not just the brits who do this) and the duty/vat is obviously cheaper to import to the UK.

The transfer from Parcel Motel to Ireland is strictly in inter EU movement so doesn't fall into the Vat/Duty net so its a nice little sneaky way to circumvent the current system legally!

Was going to mention the exchange rate earlier, but didn't they do something last year? I think they checked IP, and if you were in EU, they upped the price and charged you EU prices anyway, even if you paid in $. Well worth trying anyway.

But worth mentioning, is if you use Parcel Motel make sure you have opted to pay Duty/tax at checkout, not on delivery. Parcel Motel will not pay it, and why would they? Just in case anyone tries that.

Be wary though as the boxes they put the stuff in is huge so it will not fit in the locker. You'll be charged the Oversized rate and will have to be collected from one of their depots (or delivered for an extra charge).

And even if you pay Duties/VAT in advance, there's no guarantee DHL will not be looking for more money as I said in my earlier post. In that case, they will refuse it and you'll be none the wiser as it's not you dealing with the delivery driver.

Folks, Just to mention. I received my order from Aeropostale...THERE WAS NOT SHIPPING CHARGE...That is only on the AE.COM website.

I paid 96 Euro for the items...and that was it...no shipping charge and customers charge as its included.

    Happy with my purchase

At that price ($130) Shipping = $10, and DHL is $23.64.

It also says on their website, that outside the U.S. you pay shipping, no matter if there is promotion or not. Also last year and any other time, everyone pays shipping. So you must be an anomally.

All items in my basket came to $167.30, and when i changed Country to Ireland, and kept currency as U.S.D. It jumped to $190. - So shipping/TAX is also already included in item price.

But, even with all extra charges included, they are still great prices.

Hopefully somone will open a European Version or similar store.

ah I went onto Aeropostale there and yep extra charges are added. The discounts are gone that were there last week. Sorry about that, still half price on most items is good.

I decided to look something up as I was curious.
It seems that Borderfree (Fiftyone.com) Just randomly choose the Duty and Taxes that they decide to take.
(They are the checkout system on Aeropostale)

    EU VAT RATES

    Ireland VAT is 23%
    Items Subtotal: EUR 99.87
    Shipping: EUR 7.79
    Duties & Taxes: EUR 32.71
    Order Total: EUR 140.37

    Finland VAT is 24%
    Items Subtotal: EUR 99.87
    Shipping: EUR 23.17
    Duties & Taxes: EUR 22.62
    Order Total: EUR 145.66

    Hungary VAT is 27%
    Items Subtotal: EUR 99.87
    Shipping: EUR 36.90
    Duties & Taxes: EUR 29.08
    Order Total: EUR 165.85

    UK VAT is 20%
    Items Subtotal: EUR 99.87
    Shipping: EUR 7.79
    Duties & Taxes: EUR 20.27
    Order Total: EUR 127.93

So is it just random? Just curious. As they already raise the price per item when you choose outside the U.S.
I bet if i had chosen €100 worth of Childrens clothing i would have still been charged the same.

Is there not somebody that is supposed to be watching stuff like this?

I'm not complaining (much), Just curious as to how it is worked out.

    EDIT.

    It is bizarre.
I was buying 4 items for my nephew, and it worked out CHEAPER to add an item and get reduced postage and tax
So i tried to add another item, and it was too much. When i removed a $6 T-shirt it reduced €8.50

It still works out a great price, but i'd love to know how it's priced/taxed.

    I don't think you can. - http://www.aeropostale.com/helpdesk/index.jsp?display=ordering&subdisplay=tax

What people are referring to is the American Eagle website, that gives you the choice.

Apparently (After reading it there) the Aeropostale tax is 'estimated', so they should be refunding a fair amount of people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭5littleangels

Has anyone ever got their pre-payed taxes refunded? They are defs overcharging compared to what an post / dhl would charge on a €100 order.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 621 ✭✭✭Bebo stunnah

It seems to be done through Borderfree. They charge you the customs and pay it themselves.

    In the T&Cs:
If you choose to prepay the Import Fees, you agree and acknowledge that (a) the actual Import Fees may be more or less than the Estimate and (b) you will NOT be asked to pay more money OR receive any refund in the case that the actual Import Fees differ than the Estimate.

Pretty much by overcharging you customs they're covering themselves a loss. It does seem to be a rip off, but Revenue could well, I believe they would, look for the RRP of the clothes. That would be a lot more than the 40% extra you pay on the clothes at their current discount price!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,381 ✭✭✭✭Allyall

I don't think so. The price of the clothes coming from the manufacturer/label/designer is the value.

They sell in U.S. much lower than here. We do get stung, but it still is pretty cheap. 3 x Jeans, 4 x T-Shirts, 1 x Jacket, 2 x Tops = €110 delivered.

Can't complain. But i don't like, that they charge us extra and then add on extra VAT and the shipping goes up and down when you add items.

It's a business, we're customers, but to be so blatant, when they advertise at one price and charge a different price which isn't the Currency exhange rate (nothing like it), and, make up Taxes. It's a niggle that'll annoy if you let it, when it still works out good.

I'd love to see some European companies come back, or take over.

I deal with customs, dhl, fedex and ups everyday. My advice is don't prepay customs, they will either guess it if its not marked and dhl in my experience undervalue the items.

What should we do if DHL call to deliver the items ordered, and ask for further customs charges?
    Thanks
