Bellew vs Stevenson

On this weekend, I'm worried for Bellews safety in this one. Bellew has been down 4 or 5 times in his career from relatively light punchers he going to get KO'd badly here.

Mainly looking forward to Kovalev on the undercard!

I might have been generous predicting this to go 3 rounds.

It would be good to see Stevenson face Kovalev after he wins this.

Hope Bellew gets knocked out would cheer me up no end

Don't really know who I want to win.

Bellew is a bit of a mug but by all accounts Stevenson is (or was,at least) an out and out degenerate.

Having said that though I reckon Bellew is on a hiding to nothing here.

If Bellew is KO'd it will be another name to add to the list of the big British names who've struggled this year.

Burns was twice made look very ordinary, khan looks to be getting worse with every fight,Brook continuously flatters to deceive, the Cleverly bandwagon was derailed, Price was stopped twice,Macklin flattened by GGG(although no shame in that),even Froch looked worse for wear the other night.

Darren Barker's title win and even Martin Murray's effort against Martinez were highlights though.

I dont want anyone to get seriously hurt but I'd like bellew to get hammered. :-). If that makes sense

Brook flatters to deceive ???? he was in super form last time out and looked world class .

I can't see Bellew causing any bother here. Stevenson is a very good boxer, and hits quite heavy. It's bad news!

It took him 8 rounds to stop the walking punching bag that was Carson Jones, and this was his 2nd go at him aswell. Add the fact that he had him down in the 2nd, he should have had him out of there well before 8 rounds.

The Senchenko fight did little to convince me on him too. Senchenko was billed as a world class opponent, former world champion. The fact is Senchenko is one of the biggest paper champions you'll ever see. Look at his record, he was fighting guys with 0-1 and 7-2 records a couple of years ago. Talk about a padded record. The fact that Brook was hurt by this guy in the 4th round doesn't bode well for him either, he may have came back and stopped him, but this wasn't as impressive a victory as Sky would like you to believe.

King of the sky sports hypejobs checking in. Called most of these before they happened.

He got hit alright but i wouldn't say he got rocked ,
Anyway getting rid of Senchenko in 4 rounds is no joke,
Personally i think Kell is the best of all the brithis at the moment,

The thing that impresses me most about Brook is that he managed 30 fights without fighting anyone of note. His defence is poor and he is another sky hype job.

Paulie stopped Senchenko. That says it all about Senchenko.

Kell Brook is a charismatic elite level fighter who is not a Sky Sports hype job................ said nobody ever

As said i personally think he's a lot better than the other brits out there at the mintue and i wouldn't be surprise if he becomes a proper world Champion ,

I like Paulie but he really does have pillows for fists.

I honestly think if he had been born with KO power he could have been a hall of famer, great boxer just completely lacking in power.

I think Stevens is being a bit overrated here!

I don't think he will stop Bellew at all. It will be a close fight, Bellew trying to "box" and staying out of trouble. A close fight with a split decision for the more aggressive fighter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

Stevenson showed in his last fight that he is a good boxer as well but he will spark Bellew. Bellew doesn't have a great chin. The bet for me is Stevenson in rounds 1-6 at 6/4.

    That's a completely disingenuous post.
It was stopped cos Senchenko's eye was completely shut. He couldn't see a thing and hadn't been able to for quite some time. Nothing to do with being stopped genuinely.

Mind you Paulie had outboxed him very early before the first of a number of injuries occurred but he wasn't hurting him.

Fair point. But, he was never a threat to Paulie. That speaks volumes. Add in the fact that a completely shot Hatton did very well against Senchenko for many rds. Anyone half decent would have obliterated Hatton that night.

    This.

Stevens is just not that good, then again neither is Bellew. I think this will be a close fight.

I'm not really sure what to make of this fight. Initially when Stevenson beat Dawson, I thought the first half decent boxer he meets will beat him. I even thought someone like Cloud (who is very straightforward but strong) would take him, but he really surprised me in that fight with his movement and accuracy. Again, Cloud is very predictable, but Stevenson beat him very easily.

Bellew is not even close to being the hard puncher he says he is, but he has very underrated skills. Before the Cloud fight I would have given Bellew a very good chance of a points victory, now I'm not so sure. I also think Bellew's chin mightn't be good enough to take any flush punches, so it's a case of can Bellew last to the second half, if he can maybe his boxing skills can take him to a close points win, but that's a big 'if'.

I'd probably have it 65/35 to Stevenson, I don't like Bellew but hope he causes the upset as I would like bad things to happen Stevenson. Bellew would need to do better than he did against Miranda anyway.

Nobody likes Bellew but Stevenson is a different league of c*nt entirely. The man apparently imprisoned, beat and raped women in his capacity as a pimp. He's the lowest of the low like, he makes Tyson look like a feminist.

Well Bellew's trying the old tricks again.
Looking for a video of the weigh in and all I've found was this so far

Two idiots, a double KO would be brilliant! Bellew is going to be the one flattened though.

Haha Bellew pretending to go for him there.

Too late for me folks. Not good enough fights to warrant staying up that late, especially when you can get the fight straight away on a sunday morning these days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,368 ✭✭✭✭walshb

No way. I've stayed up too many times at ridiculous o'clock and regretted it. But staying up that late for Tony Bellew? That would be a whole new level of ridiculous.

Ya im not staying up . Sky plus and ill watch it at 7 in bed. Thanks for the replies cheers

That was a long time ago. He was never convicted of rape, otherwise he would still be in jail.

Obviously it was awful but he was 18. That was almost 20 years ago and he has clearly turned his life around

Skys coverage is over at 530am. Think it starts at 130. So that Would suggest it will start before 5am

I'm quite interested in the Kovalev fight.

I've seen Sillakh a few times and there's no doubt he is a very classy boxer who can also punch and he has one of the best jabs in the business, which IMO is one of the fundamentals required to beat Kovalev.

I've said it before that I think Kovalev is a bit overrated so this fight should tell a lot about him. Grachev outlasted Sillakh, who seemed to run out of steam, but he had the Russian hardman down early. I suspect Sillakh could well outbox Kovalev for the early parts but it's a matter of whether he has the stamina and chin to withstand the undoubted onslaught coming his way. He certainly has the skill and punch.

Derek Chisora with a 3rd round KO of Pala (not that anyone cares ;) )

The continuing theme of premature stoppages.

Just read that it was a 3rd round stoppage on a rabbit punch. What happened?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭megadodge

Very confusing. Chisora landed a few punches on the inside, then kinda sidestepped him and the opp walked into the ring cornerpost with his back to Chisora, who then threw two punches at him, one to the back of the head, the second round the side. The opp had made no attempt to move (but 'defend yourself at all times) as IMO he expected the ref. to just call 'stop' in order to let him right himself, but instead the ref stopped it!!

It was actually a good fight up to that point, with Chisora rocked twice with good left hooks.

Chisora landed 2/3 clubbing shots that spun Pala around and into the corner (under pressure, although he clearly wasn't too badly hurt or anything) and then with Pala's back turned Chisora lands a monster of a straight right to the back of the head and a good left hook on the side of the chin, and then the referee immediately waves off the fight with Pala's arms slumped on the ropes.

No recognition of the rabbit punch at all from the ref, and a stoppage would have been crazy before that as the only one who had been hurt in the fight was Chisora. Anyway once it was waved off Pala turned around and turns out he was fine, not even that shaky from the huge (illegal) combination Chisora landed to finish it.
Box Nation commentators called it a good stoppage, and this one will sink under the radar. The truth is stoppages far worse than Froch vs Groves happen all the time, but they just don't get the same exposure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭gene_tunney

That stoppage was an absolute joke. Way worse than Froch Groves.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 719 ✭✭✭Tobyglen

He stopped defending himself. He just slumped into the corner hoping to avoid more punches. I think it's a fair stoppage when a boxer does that because he was just hoping for the ref to break things up when he was under pressure.

The rabbit punch looked bad but what was Chisora going to do? The guy buried himself into the corner after taking some big shots, it was a chance to reinforce to the ref that he wasn't defending himself.

It often happens that you end up in a corner with your back facing out and you can't turn as you will get clocked. In that case the ref has to step in to let you turn and let the fight continue

A lot of the time the standing 8 count is not in effect. I'd say most juristictions don't have it. I don't actually know if it was in effect tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭megadodge

LeMieux reminds me of a young Nigel Benn - all out attack, every punch thrown to the max, don't worry a whole lot about defense. His technique is better but he has the wildness about him that you know will result in trouble when he meets opponents of a higher class. It already has.

    But boy can he punch!!

Really good welter scrap on now, between Dan and Bezier (sp). Constant two-way action the whole way.

In fairness, Sillak got up, didn't wobble, looked straight at the ref, answered him when he was spoken to, so IMO he deserved to go on.
