    Hi there,

It's a dongle that will connect Sky+ to your wifi, which in theory means you should be able to get all of the on-demand features, as well as select box office movies or events without having to call Sky. Handy little gizmo, got one myself.

I just called Sky to book a fight about 6 months ago. Told them I was connected to wi-fi, but pissed off that I have to call to book PPV events as I'd no phone line. The dongle gets you out of this particular scenario. They posted it the next day free of charge!

I got the card offering me a free gadget, ordered it on line and never heard, got an email confirmation and never heard another word. That was several weeks ago.

I got the card, and just rang the number.
    Item arrived 2 days later.

Ours arrived but I'm quite disappointed with what's on offer. We have a basic package plus sports and no HD channels.

They use the term "Box Sets" loosely. Grey's Anatomy and The Soprano's seem the only programmes I can see that has every episode of every season so far. My Dad loves Nikita so I thought it'd be great if he could watch it in order but they only have two episodes from Season 3 up.

Had a look at it myself the other day and I agree, it is an incredibly underwhelming selection. I imagine it is only any good if you have Sky Movies.

Got the card also got a separate letter saying my monthly bill is going up 1 euro a month!

I logged into to my sky tv account, on the website,
it says on demand unit, price 12.euro .
    nothing about a free offer.

I was the same - saying I didn't qualify for free connector on mysky. Rang them and they said that they were being done in batches - I could wait or they could send me one today for €12.99 and credit it back to my account straightaway. I did that.

I got one of these earlier this week but can't connect it to my broadband. No wps button on my router so using the connect with password option. My remote buttons won't scroll through the letters to let me enter the password.

For example the first character of my password is p but I can only get 7 on the remote button.

Any ideas? Asked on sky's forum but got no replies yet.

    Thanks!

You using the Sky remote? mine automatically came up with letters for the password.....you can also try the SSID instead, will type numbers

Press the 7 button a number of times in succession and it will go through the letters pqr

Thanks for the reply - I pressed the 7 button a number of times and all I get are 7s. The only buttons that give me the option of letters are 2 and 3 - and I only get capital letters.

Yes, using the sky remote. Do you mean I can enter my SSID instead of the password ?

    Yep...you should get 3 boxes for wps/password/SSID

    I did anyhow

Thanks, will take a closer look after Christmas and see what happens.

really need one of these, can it be used with the old white box??? i have the newer black box at home and it is unreal in comparison to the girlfriends mams one which is pretty useless.

    Thanks for the reply

I had another go at connecting - the 3 options I'm given on screen are
Connect using WPS button (router doesn't have one so this is out)
    Connect using password
Connect using WPS pin (it's looking for an 8-digit code)

I got a reply on the Sky help forum which said that passwords may need to be converted to hexadecimal before entering - quite a few users had the same problem as me, and this solved it for them.

Didn't solve it for me however, so it's back to the drawing board! My router is several years old (I got it when I got broadband from bt about 8 years ago), might I need a new one?

    jamesbondings,
There are only a couple of boxes the connector works with - don't think the older white sky boxes are included. If you can find the system details on the menu, it will show the model and version numbers. The version number has to start with 4f30 or 4f31.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭gipi

OK, I finally sorted the connection by doing the following:

    - convert my network password to hexadecimal
    - switch off all other items that use wireless (phone, laptop).
    - use the "connect with password" option on the sky box
    - enter the hexadecimal password

The connector found the network when there were no other connections.

    Hope this might help others.

Thanks to boardsies for the replies to my query.

Thanks. I see it still €12.99 for me even though I have sky hd plus broadband :(

Is it delivered via An Post or courier.

I got mine a couple of days after ringing them. Handy for the kids programmes that they save on the hard drive after download and not just streamed but even with a 25mb UPC connection it's quite slow to download.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,011 ✭✭✭Storm 10

I got mine free by post, its tiny no bigger than a box of matches, I have Eircom broadband and the download is almost instant, picked two Fr Ted programmes to from the box sets to watch last night, clicked on them and they played straight away.

Mine came within a couple of days too but I can't get it to connect to Wifi. Had the problem with the Sky remote not allowing lower case -- seems the character set available on the Remote varies depending on the Network security setting. Tried manual wireless set up which did allow the lower case password but it still didn't connect. Plugged the Wireless Connector into the laptop and tried http://skywirelessconnector/ which is suggested on some forums. Was able to log in that way and to select the right Network security/password settings but still couldn't get it to connect. It might be settings on the router but since everything else is connecting to the Wifi okay, I'm going to live with Sky on demand rather than risk losing access on some of the stuff I use more often -- like a first generation iPad and an Internet radio.

Have a read of my post in this thread from about a week ago - had the same problems with the remote and the connection but sorted it witbout needing to change any settings on the router.

Careful you'll be giving Eircom a good name...

you can stream the programme after a few seconds of dl starting, doesn't mean it's an instant DL

Yes, which means you can then dispense with your ethernet cable

Sky offered some customers a Free On Demand Connector to soften the blow of the December price increase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,883 ✭✭✭jeffk

Wouldn't be using them instead of Ethernet.

Not sure on speed, but surely wired is faster than wireless.
