    Hillman Imp Californian was 875cc.

No standard Imp was 998cc,not even the Imp Sport or Sunbeam Stilletto although many got modified. 998cc may have been standard on the Clan Crusader or Ginetta G15.

edit...just re-read the title....you mean cars you once owned and never should have sold OP ?

    http://www.imps4ever.info/tech/engine.html#998
    Engines; 998cc
Early 998 cc blocks from the factory were of the dry liner type, i.e. they had liners fitted in a similar manner to the standard blocks. This block in 998 cc form was not too reliable and led to the development of a wet liner block. These liners should be fitted only to the later, stiffer, blocks.

In earlier years you could buy an 998cc performance engine, built to Imp Sport specification but with 998 block and pistons; complete with clutch, distributor, plugs, manifolds and carburettor. Power output: 65bhp @ 6000rpm.

Chrysler Comps and later Talbot Special Tuning sold 998cc Sport engines, both direct from the factory as well as via Rootes (later: Talbot) dealers.
In 1981 the outright price was £450.
They would also convert an existing engine into a 998 if you sent them the block.

Reboring of a 998 engine up to 20 thou oversize should be ok for road use. Getting pistons may be a problem. Sheepbridge Engineering used to make them.
For competition use it would be better to put in new liners.

    998cc Hepolite pistons

Correct. The "factory" dry-liner 998cc "Rallye" engine was a retro-fit from competition department.

A wet-liner 998cc from Reg Hartwell's in Bournemouth was a far better bet...

998cc engines are nearly always (popular) aftermarket conversions.

My engine was bought from the Chrysler Competitions Department and used Wills Rings, R21 camshaft, Sport head and block strengthener kit. To that was added twin 40 DCOE Webbers, a Janspeed full flow exhaust manifold, pre engaged starter and an alternator. It would rev quite happily to 8,000 rpm :D

Cooling was handled by a comps high capacity water pump to a front mounted Allegro 1750SS radiator and the brakes were Triumph Herald discs and calipers up front, RAC Comp springs and Dunlop D1 alloys with 175/70/12 Goodyears! Not bad for 1972!!!

    1989 E34 535i

I loved those cars, Had to sell the E30 to cover the repair bill on my W124. heartbreaking stuff, It was one of the most perfect runabouts ever, but I used the merc for longhaul driving and the missus couldnt see the point when she had a 'perfectly adequate' 05 Corsa, should have gotten rid of her first instead.

the 535 was sold when I moved home from Australia, I never really missed the merc but I do miss that car, absolute rocketship, I used to love how the suspension hunkerd down when you pressed the sports button, that thing could really get up and dance on the motorways

But they weren't pictured. :D They were only links to pictures (of similar cars), which is a relief as my mobile provider is stingy on internet allowance.

Don't take it personally Capri, but perhaps it might be an idea to calm down on the links and cut 'n' paste like. I think most of us know what a Renault 4 looks like. ;)

Just tryin to help out with pics of similar machines, other have just listed their cars - have old photos that I think I posted before, especially 686 CIK , the Shelby, but I'd have to find on the computer or rescan etc and I'm just too busy at the moment to start doing it all again. I've deleted the links, OK ?

Fair enough, I was just reading between the lines of a few posts.

I suppose it saves a bit of confusion leaving the pics out if they aren't the actual cars and if anyone isn't sure what something is, they can always ask or turn to Google themselves.

    Anyway, back on topic,

Reliant Kitten estate, with what turned out to be a tuned 848cc engine with Piper fast road cam...

I can't think of any others, as I haven't sold that many, the larger proportion has been regrettable scrapping of various vehicles.

The car I wish I still had was a '91 Toyota Soarer 2.5 twin turbo. Big heavy thing, not a sports car but a Grand Tourer. It could fairly shuffle along and I never once had a "moment" in it.

It was silver with nice 5 spoke split rims and the factory bib and tail spoilers.

You can't get the twin turbo in left hand drive which I'd want now, every so often I have a look on autoscout24 at US spec Lexus SC300's which can be picked up in Germany for around €2,500 but I had two 3.0 litre normally aspirated Supras around the time I had the Soarer and they felt very under powered. But now that I am old and sensible the 3.0 litre probably has more than enough power for me.

I also had a Mk 1 Isuzu Big Horn Lotus edition that I regret selling. For road use it was the best SUV I ever drove, lovely suspension and gearbox.

Financially sensible to sell them when I did as both plummeted in value afterwards but two vehicles I really enjoyed driving.

My one regret was a '88 Citroen AX GT Sportif which I was told by a previous owner had a 1.9BX carb on it. It could move (wheelspin in second in the dry, third in the wet) and it was lift-off oversteer central. But it also had a habit of sulking (Coil failure at 2 in the morning, burst water hose, very dodgy starter, etc) and the body was very rough cosmetically (I could stick my fingers out the gap between the door and the body!).

Despite all its moods I bloody loved it and it never left me stranded. I once drove it from Killarney to Cork, having to stop every 20 miles or so to pour Coke into the bellhousing (in the inspection plate) to clear the oil off the clutch as I burst the crankshaft oil seal. There was another time I walked back to the car in Mahon Point and spotted a pool of coolant under the car. There was a pin hole in the lower water hose and when the system pressurised it opened the hole. The cure was to top up the coolant, turn on the heater full blast (on the warmest day of the year) and drive it home fairly lively to get air through the rad to cool it. I had to turn it off at every traffic light to stop it getting warm (with the dodgy starter remember). I remember a fairly warm trip home and naturally the hole opened (pressure coolant system) when I parked it outside the parents back door.

The worst part was that I sold it in a fit of madness to someone three weeks before a night navigation trial. I was marshalling on the night navigation trial and the new owner blew the engine at the time point I was marshalling at. Bloody disgusted....

1979 Merc 300TD (W123 estate). My first real car, (had a Mini before that which disintegrated after 3 weeks). Was Milan Brown, had it resprayed Signal Red, sold it to a mates mother, glad to say she still has it, it's still alive somewhere near Marseille.

1968 Porsche 912 (4 cyl, 2.0l) . one of the most perfect hanling cars I've ever had, I had an 82 911 SC (3.0) at the same time and preferred to drive the 912.

1985 BMW E28 524td. Superb car, had 3 of them, incredibly economical, great handling.

1977 Merc 207 Camper. Fabulous memories and some great holidays, drove it to Mali, sold it there, last seen 10 years ago as a Bush Taxi, sad and horrible way for such a loyal friend to die. :(

1989 Pug 505 GRD estate. Utterly brilliant car in every way, the only car you'll ever need.

2001 Totota Hiace. Incredibly reliable, I regretted selling it when the new owner was driving down the street with it.

That's about it, lesson learnt, I own a 2001 SAAB 9-3, I know that I'll never sell it.

E28 is streets ahead, Ok it came on the market 5 years later but it's better than the W124 in many ways.

Both cars are very reliable, both are comfortable, Beemer is sportier in seating than the W123. Economy wise miles apart. W123 got 9.5 l/100 km, 524td did 6 l/100km, both of these on long motorway runs. If I had the choice I'd take the BMW any day of the week, as much as I love W123's .

Three cars that were never built but should have been:
E28 Touring (some people have done their own jobs)
    E28 Convertible
E28 Two Dr. Coupe (yes the 6 series is based on the E12 but I mean a coupe on the design of the E28)

    Thanks Kev.

Just checked my old records for the S123 300TD. I covered almost 44k km in it and the total overal fuel consumption was 7.15 l/100km. But the car had the 5-speed gearbox and that made the difference in comparison to your 300TD with only 4-speed. If your S123 was an automatic, then another 0.7 - 1l on top is normal.

For some time, I had my mind on the E28 Diesel and if I had the money and needed two cars, would buy one (should never sell it then :)).

Agree 100%, especially on the Touring Kombiwagen. It would have been a perfect car if they ever made one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,793 ✭✭✭Red Kev

5 speed makes a huge difference alright, the 9.5 l/100km figure I have would be 4 up plus baggage at 120-130 kmh on a motorway. Often did 1500 km trips with my then GF or some friends, and it was pretty constant at that.

Incidentally I'd rate the 505 GRD estate better than the W123.

E28 Touring is relatively easily done, take the rear off an E 30 touring and with a bit of fiddling it fits. Nice car if you want to make one.

But lads , this is the point , if you never sold them you couldn't buy the next one and the shortened list would be very short and boring.
"je ne regrette rien" and better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all .

Yeah, maybe some people are getting mixed up, but I'd keep an E28, 505 estate and a 912 as daily drivers if I had the space/need/cash to tax them (€2200 p.a for the 505 and E28 together!!!). I've had other cars that I've loved but wouldn't nedessarily keep for good such as an 88 Opel Senator 3.0 CD or a 90 Audi 200 Avant. I've also restored and modified a 62 VW T1, and a 68 VW Beetle Convertible but although they were nice to own I don't regret selling them a lot.

One car I had and would have loved to keep but forgot to mention is one of these, same colour as well:

Rare 6-cyl Landrover Series II - ex British Gas.
Failed MOT due to chassis rot and I was too poor to get it fixed - like the final scene from "Of mice and men" it was.:(

An absolutely mint, stock, white mk2 XR2 Fiesta I had when I was only about 18 and hadn't a hope of insuring. I swapped it for a 205 1.9 gti, again, I don't know what I was thinking looking back now.
The guy I swapped with wrote the Fiesta off not long after. I'll always mourn that car!
I sold the Pug on later for a decent profit so it wasn't all bad I suppose.

mk1 golf gti , had 2 but one i regret selling , have replaced it now though with a basket case resto lol

opel kadett C's had 4 altogether , but regret selling one of the irish saloons i had

datsun 100a ,wasnt anything special but i enjoyed using it as a daily driver

82 audi 80 turbo diesel , bought back when they were worth nothing and sold again for very little

audi 200 5t , again bought for humble money but lost interest and sold it on and it met a bad end

87 irish 3rd gen civic , was in good nick but just an old car at the time , and also a 4th gen vti civic back in 2000 that was mint and un messed with, had a couple of 2nd gen 1300s models but never regretted selling them on, way too rusty !!

fiat 131 , had 2 one was a sport and i regret selling it even though it needed work , the other was a bitsa and didnt bother me at the time

83 audi coupe gt , bought to raid for spares for the coupe stockcar i had at the time but was to good so sold on again , should have put it away at the time as it was mint and only 38k miles back in 97 , bought it for 150punts from the owners son after a bit of haggling

escorts , had a few mk1s WTI 173 was the first and the only one i regret selling the other 3 didnt bother me although 2 of them were early compression strut type cars and one was an original irish one too
had a few mk2s aswell probably the one i regret most is YZP 188 , sold it in 99 for 600 punts ,the others i never missed, only one of the others was an irish one the rest were uk cars

had loads of other machines too when we were younger , but they were nearly all used for the field and destroyed im embarassed to say , a lot id like to have today , datsuns , toyotas , renaults , fiats VWs etc , some of them rare now , but back then worth nothing and not even making big money for scrap , we normally had to wait til there was 4or 5 cars laying in the yard to lift before the lorry would come at the time,, as teenagers though it was great craic , not so nice thinking back now on them :o
