    Aim high, Bugatti Veyron.

Failing that, Micra or Clio or 206.

    Fiesta 1.25.
Small enough to have low insurance but powerful enough to get you up a hill, faster than walking

nissan or toyota, don't buy any euro scrap.

Budget? A 1.2 and 1.4 have same road tax. Punto or fiesta I'd recommend. Or corolla, astra in a 1.4. Should be no difference in your insurance really between a 1.2 and a 1.4 or very little

A little more info such as your budget and your requirements will give posters a better idea as to what car to recommend to you.

Holy god, what age are you? Licence type? Named driver experience?
    There's a lot of variables.

What will it be mainly used for? Will you need a big boot?

Well seeing as you've no experience, do not, for the love of god, spend €5000 on your first car. It's not a stab at you but most people end up damaging their first car, little bumps or big crashes, no point in throwing that kind of money at a first car.

Now, having said that, you obviously want something more modern, this is fine. You can spend €1.5-€2k and get a great car but to be honest I'd start looking at cars in the €750-€1000 range. Don't forget you'll have to pay ~€400 in tax a year and probably ~€1500 for insurance if you're lucky.

Look at 95-99 Nissan Almeras, Corollas, Mazda 323s, etc. You're looking at cheap to buy, cheap to run, reliable and not-so-important-if-you-crash cars.

Drive them for a year or two and then spend a bit of money on something a bit nicer. :)

    I had a '00 Micra starting out.

Rust was the biggest problem with them as far as I know. If you got one in good shape you're flying though, engine never failed to start and spare parts a plenty!

Out of the two the Corolla is the better car. A good example can be a bit on the expensive side though.

Grand cars. But check insurance. The higher value of the car will increase insurance.Don't mind that Cian lad saying you should only spend a grand on your first car due to scraping or crashes. That's just complete and utter bull.

Still haven't shown us any evidence of this so called jap reliability. Where is it? In the boot? In my sock?

Im going from personal experience, but to be honest it kind of shows you have absolutely no knowledge about cars if you are willing to recommend a fiesta over the likes of a toyota or early nissan.

The basis of you're whole argument will be i want proof! You go and do a survey and come back and let us know how you get on!

Look up cars on donedeal or carzone and enter the reg into the link above and will show you the rates. Make sure to ring up for quotes as well, over the internet they usually charge you more. I find Liberty the best especially for people starting out.

Astra 1.4 sounds reasonable. I've a Laguna 1.6 as my first and find it handy enough, I'd only driven a peugeot 106 and the instructors Micra before that.

I do agree with the sentiments Cian had earlier about not spending too much even if those numbers sound a bit low. As regards your own budget - personally I think 3k is a better upper limit than 5k. You should be able to get something in reasonable shape and the better side of the 10 year mark, maybe an 04 or 05. I'd say take some time to find a good deal if you can, not so much on price as much as a good condition example, reasonable mileage (maybe even nicer spec).

I'd recommend really researching the model of car you're thinking of, not so much to rule out particular cars, but being aware of the pitfalls up front, to help in checking over a car you're looking at, and knowing what to ask about given the age and mileage.

A car that age though, you might be best buying locally even if the car seems in good shape, just in case you've to go back with even small issues.

Obviously I'm only partly giving the advice from my own experience, some of it is going on what friends, family, work colleagues advised.

That was my thinking too, but I got quotes for cars some of which were 1.1 up to a 1.9, the cost of insurance never changed seemed in my instance anyway engine size had no real bearing on my quotes.

Lolling at getting flamed and DGT knowing nothing about cars.

I guess you're right though, Fiestas are rubbish cars. Let's disregard their nimble handling, great reliability and nippy 1.25 engines. Sure a 1.0 Yaris must be miles better.
And if course you're right, spending €5k on a first car is a great idea. It only makes sense to buy a clean car so you can make bollocks if the body work and burn out the clutch then sell the car for 10% of what you paused for it in a year or two.
No one wants cars owned by learners, it kills their value.

And as for DGT, well he's our resident Dr. Frankenstein.

I think your over emphasizing things here. Me or none of my friends never had any any problems learning to drive and never dented any body work or had scratches like most learner drivers have not as well. Also it is very very difficult to burn out the clutch on a decent car and you should be fine with the clutch after two or three weeks for driving. Also how will people know its a learner car if your planning to sell? All you have to put on the internet is planning on upgrading to a bigger car.You should be fine with the clutch after two weeks of driving and you have the instructors car anyway to burn the clutch out on ha

Just because a car's older or cheaper doesn't mean it'll break. I bought my first car for €200, if it hadn't crashed it'd been going strong for years.
Old simple Jap tech I hard to beat for reliability.

    Fair play!
I know when was driving first I was terrible for reversing into tree stumps and the lot. It's a learning curve, **** happens when you're getting used to it. Had I of payed €5k for a car I'd have been going mental but sure it was €200, no harm done. :)

The clutch depends totally on the driver, I know people driving for years that still ride the clutch and are afraid to go into 5th, revving the bullocks out of the engine.

And it's fairly easy to spot a learner car if you're into cars.
You can tell a lot about a cars history with a test drive and a torch. :D

What's a boy racer car? Anything 1.4 ain't gonna be fast enough to race anything. :p

I thought the same but I then I got bored of the car after a few months.
I wanted something with a bit more poke or a bit more comfort, I opted for the poke. :D

Everyone on the internet has a problem with every single car ever made. Fiesta, Astra, Micra, Corolla, Yaris are all good cars, and cheaper to fix than other cars if anything goes wrong with them which is the main thing for anyone starting out.
