I've recently learned to wread and right and wrote these winner$$$$$

Prince of Burma 1.25 Lingfield 14/1

I have somewhat missed the boat here regarding this colt’s chances but I still think he is a decent each way price at 14s and I’m fairly confident he will show much better form than his recent form figures suggest. A three time winner on polytrack, he clearly prefers the surface and won a Kempton maiden over this trip second time out back in November 2010, and ran some credible races in defeat before finally getting his head in front again a little over a year later over a mile at Kempton, winning a class 4 handicap off a mark of 75 by a comfortable length, before following up over the same distance next time out at Lingfield under a penalty (effectively a mark of 81) and he couldn’t have won any easier, beating a smart horse 2 ½ lengths.

Was raised to a mark of 88 after that and didn’t run badly off it at times, particularly so when 5th of 22 in the 40k William Hill Spring Handicap at Doncaster on Lincoln day, beaten over 2 ½ lengths. Gradually came down the handicap after that, and he really caught the eye in January in a handicap over this C&D when behind Al’s Memory off a mark of 78, trading 2 on in the run and was badly hampered as well as being well backed. Looked like he was ready to strike soon and was beaten over a length into third by Mubtabi earlier this year off a mark of 75 on the turf at Bath in a race that has worked out really well, he gave the winner 2lbs that day who was last seen comfortably winning a decent handicap off 4lbs higher.

He was beaten in to second next time out around here off 75, beaten by a horse who has won twice since and was beaten a length off a 10 lb higher mark last time out. He has looked like he has been a bit of a plot horse in the last two months, having been run over sprint distances which he clearly isn’t, and as a result his mark has come right down to a career low of 62, with the handicapper looking very generous dropping him 3lbs from his last run. He’s well drawn and back up in trip tomorrow and the money appears to be down for him, hopefully he can bounce back to form, though he will need a bit of luck in running (breaks slowly, races late).

    Saint Are 3.35 Haydock 14/1

A talented but frustrating gelding who should have more wins to his name than he does, but he is smart on his day and I think he has a big handicap chase in him this season and I think tomorrow represents a fair chance for him. A lightly raced hurdler, he caused a bit of a shock by breaking his maiden in the Grade 1 3 mile novices’ at the Grand National meeting in April 2011, staying on strongly to beat Cantlow by 4 lengths. A smart chaser, he showed plenty of ability first time out over fences, finishing a good second to the talented Champion Court (rated in the high 150s), though it was disappointing that he couldn’t beat Harry the Viking in what looked a winnable novice at Doncaster over three miles two starts after.

He put a couple of lacklustre runs at Cheltenham behind him (not sure he likes the stiff track or tricky fences) when coming good at the Aintree meeting yet again, landing his first win over fences when landing a competitive extended three mile handicap chase off 1 lb higher mark than he runs off tomorrow, beating a good horse in Battle Group (a three time winner since), with the pair a mile clear of the remainder. He has been more hit than miss subsequently, though he didn’t run badly last December when an 11 lengths 4th at Cheltenham off a mark of 145 behind a subsequent winner, and ran well over this C&D off a five pound higher mark when an 8 lengths third behind Vino Griego, with the winner running second in a good handicap at the Festival next time out off 7lbs higher.

He has run poorly in all of his starts since, though he had previously ran poorly at Cheltenham, and it was madness to run him in the Grand National as he has never looked as if he wants a really marathon trip, whilst it may have been a case of one run too many when disappointing at Sandown in April. He ran over a trip probably too short for him last time out, though even allowing for that he ran woeful, never travelling. That said he is the kind of horse to pop up at a price, and this is one of the best openings he has had for a while. A risky proposition, but looks a fair each way bet.

Race of the day is at 1:50 at Haydock tomorrow. Clondaw Kaempfer is a horse I have been following since it first ran and scored a highly impressive win over The Liquidator. Won its next two races easily while up against weaker opposition than this time admittedly. Last time out it stumbled at the third last while travelling well, hurt itself and had to be pulled up. I think but for that, it would have either won or came second to a very good horse in Taquin Du Seuil. Distance should be no problem, neither should the soft ground be either.

4/1 with various bookies at the moment. I reckon it'll be more like 3/1 at the off tomorrow.

    Haydock

1.50: Clondaw Kaempher (Backed @ 9/2 earlier) - Good bumper form from Ireland, beating The Liquidator. Done little wrong over hurdles last season bar last start when something was amiss, 'hopefully', and pulled up. Looks to be off a very reasonable mark and has winning course form. Trainer is a worry, as ever.

2.25: Gullinbursti ew @ 8/1 - Hacked up against trees on season opener lto but could still be well treated here on his chase mark and given that he's likely to be open to further improvement with the yard clear of the bug which affected them all last season. Lto chasers have a good record in this race, yard is in form and ground and trip should be fine.

3.00: Bobs Worth @ 5/2 (Stan James) - Regardless of Haydock not suiting Bobs Worth best, every 3m+ race comes down to staying power. Bobs Worth will have to be coming from a different parish if the likes of SC, CC & Dynaste are to beat him. Going his preferred direction, can't see them stretching him enough for that to happen. Tidal Bay (backed him ew @ 10/1) to follow him home for the forecast.

    Ascot

2.05: Captain Chris @ 6/4 - Won this race last year and has done nothing since to suggest he isn't as good this time round. Al Ferof seems to be priced on the impression he left on final run before injury and the fact that Captain Chris concedes 4lb. He was poor on his one Ascot run. Captain Chris' run behind Cue Card here last season is the best form in the book and Dickie will hopefully ride a similar race to the one he did in last years small field, keeping him to the rail and getting him into a nice rhythm.

Treble: Bobs Worth, Annie Power & Captain Chris @ 12/1.

Kris kross looks interesting for lucinda Russell. Travelling a good 500k there and back and only horse in the travelling party

Annie Power is my main bet!

Treble of Annie Power, Oscars Well and Al Ferof too.

Lie Ferit at Haydock e/w also.

    Captain Chris a non runner

My lay on Al Ferof now reverts to 1.11 after deduction. Pity I didn't just back CC instead!

Nicholls quite cautious about Al Ferof on his Betfair column but seems very happy with Zarkandar

    14:05 Ascot - Al Ferof

First things first, this is a prep race for the King George and I have left plenty to work on. So I wouldn't be that disappointed by defeat. But he has still done plenty, including a racecourse gallop, so he is fit enough to do himself justice. He just isn't fully tuned up, and that could be the difference between victory and defeat against the likes of Captain Chris.

We really thought that we had a Kempton horse on our hands after his sparkling win in the Paddy Power, and it was not the best day I have ever had when we discovered his injury at the same time as that of Big Buck's back in December. I was at the Sports Personality Of The Year Awards with John Hales, and I was probably the most miserable person in there! But his was only a minor leg injury that required rest, so we obviously took the patient route with him and put him away for the season.

He has come back looking great, big and well, and I just hope that this race sets us up nicely for bigger challenges ahead. I hate these small fields though, as you often get a falsely-run race.

Fanny Power is very short now. I've only just noticed she's only 14 for the champion hurdle on Betfair

    Let's hope so!

I remember backing Stormez in the Scottish National a few years back at 40/1. Punted into around 10/1, first horse beaten!

Pity Captain Chris was pulled. Really think he had the beating of Al Ferof round Ascot today

Carraig Mor didn't jump that well first time, I was thinking to myself he'd jumped much better today just before that crashing mistake.

Not a fan of Choc but that was hardly his fault.

Shocking mistake alright. He should have left the horse alone, he was going well enough and he needlessly started bustling him up just before that hurdle.

Notwithstanding the mistake, King is flying at the moment and Thornton can't even win on by far and away the best horse in the race.

I never rated him but he is absolutely dire the last number of years, must be the whip rules he was very fond of using it back in the day.

Serious burned fingers on Carraig Mor. Was 1/3 on Betfair last night, just saw the SP was 1/8

That was always going to be a race to dodge with Rolling Star too bad to be true last season, impossible to tell how good he was.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,564 ✭✭✭kiers47

Ya I don't get it? Didn't think he did much wrong horse wasn't good enough today. Would also be surprised if they don't step him up soon to.
Rolling star had his conditions and also goes really well first time out. Was alway gonna be tough to beat.

    Why?

Did you watch the race, the horse is going as well as anything at the last and half a length down and wasn't even asked to pick up.

He was never beating rolling star tbh, whether Schofield rode the horse to its best placing I don't know, but no way was he winning the race.

Good man Urban. After you flagged it up I looked into it myself and it indeed looked like a right old plot. Had a very, very nice bet on at 11s.

Utter shambles of a race! Evans 'lucky' the stalls got vandalised for his occasional slow starter!
