Sky TV Price Increase From Feb 1 2014

I noticed on a leaflet I got today for Sky that on the bottom it said "Sky TV will increase from Feb 1 2014 as per our standard terms" or something along those lines. It doesn't say how much but I'm guessing it's €2 as it was in 2013. So the standard package will now be €29 per month! Just thought I'd let you all know and apologies if there's already an existing thread.

Sky - Pay more for Less

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,672 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

yeah they seem to have moved the annual price increase to february from September for Ireland. really dosent make sense to be paying full price unless you are stuck in a 12 month contract these days with all the offers. on top of that they still havent brought in the equivalent of the £5 HD entertainment extra pack they have in the UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,201 ✭✭✭zg3409

I am paying zero per month for a 35 Euro pack, for 6 months ending in February, then it would, in theory, go up to full price.

I already have made a note to cancel in January. The true price is what you are willing to pay or haggle for. Those prices are just the maximum price. Even UPC have hidden discount prices not shown on the website.

What size of increase are they making? They need to be careful - they are an easy target for families looking to save money from their monthly outgoings. Any increases just makes them stick out.

Was just about to type the exact same thing here!!

can be up to 10% according to their terms and conditions but usually in the region of 1 to 3 euro depending on the package.

$ky is like fags for many now. A necessity rather than a luxury.

Bit of a pain in the hole being a customer since 2005 what with their yearly price hikes.

sooo glad we cancelled in August, have freesat & Humax PVR, dont miss it at all and glad to stick it too them as theyre becoming far too expensive( ok, you can get a deal off them if you cancel but still ).

Ignoring idiots who comment "far right" because they don't even know what it means

Cancelled my UK account 3 years ago, after being with them since the start.

Don't miss them one bit, and have saved £1650 so far (having said that, I dread to calculate how much they got off me since they launched:().

8 to 10k in my case

They make 100's of millions in the Republic each year for little cost,90% of which goes out of the country and millions to her majestys treasury as it's UK vat that's charged on your sub,not Irish vat.So that's 20% of subs going to Geoorge Osborne.

I noticed the letter they sent out about the increase mentioned catchup tv - does this mean the tv players will be coming?

There is a mention on other threads an Irish catchup service was meant to launch but now seems to be delayed with no new date. Someone in the UK reported seeing a TV3 player option until it dissapeared, so it looks like they are testing something and may launch it at some stage shortly.

I bet it is to compensate the revenue they are losing on the sports subs.
I bet Sports subs in Ireland are way down on last year.

They have 1 less football game to offer per weekend than last year - yet charge the same price.
And yeah - still they expect you to fork out €15 for your sports sub in HD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,672 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

its the same stuff with sky. in the uk you can get HD in the Entertainment Extra pack for £5 whereas here there is no option you have to pay €15. I guess they will milk it as long as people pay it.

on the basic one but paying 19 a month.
my broadband trial finishes in January. I called them today go get a date and was told I'll have to pay line rental.
told him I'll call in 2 weeks to cancel the lot and was told efibre is launching soon.

Only for I'm in contract with them for broadband I'd be well gone.
The TV I will always keep though.
I was told in September, October and November that they were launching "soon"
Was also told they'd launch in Late December, Early New Year, late January, February and now around May 2014.
    Really annoys me :(

really dosent make sense to be paying full price unless you are stuck in a 12 month contract

A "Contract" with sky is for a Term, not what's subscribe to. Customers are perfectly entitled to upgrade/downgrade at 30 day intervals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,987 ✭✭✭mikeym

Sky movies is a complete waste of money.

I have it half price and I dont even watch anything thats on Sky Movies.

As for the sports losing Espn means were paying more for less.

Drop the charge on HD and mulitroom to a fiver like UPC and they might well get more sports subs

my dissapointment over not giving irish viewers the new BBC HD channels was greeted by this one euro increase charge letter from sky this morning, cant get rid of sky as other family members wont live without it (sigh).

They might give us the new BBC HD channels to counteract the price increase.

This increase is the straw to break the camel's back for me.

I have been getting the family warmed up to a change in TV setup.

Can someone point me to a thread that would tell me what my options are and what type of box I need.

I want a box that can take input from satellite (free channels) and aerial (RTE etc) and functionality to record either/both inputs (Sky+ functionality).

    Thanks.

    Thanks.

That's a slight problem - there's no 'nice' single box answer! I did look into it a while back.

You can get a Walker PVR to record Saorview and a Humax to record Freesat. Two boxes, two remotes (unless you get a programmable one), two TV inputs. Cost about €170 for the Walker and another €200 odd for the Humax or similar Freesat PVR.

    or

Get a combi box to record both. But they are limited in EPG (normally now and next on satellite only - they may have changed a bit since mine came out a few years back) and some only have one tuner so can only record one thing at once (with limited options to view another channel).

I pay €21 a month for Sky on a deal and I got €50 credit to the account after ringing and saying I could not afford it any more. So that €202 per yr for TV. Half the price of getting two boxes and a whole lot less hassle for the family.

I'm by no means a big Sky fan and if there was one non-Sky box to rule them all.... I'd probably get it as I do watch mostly FTA channels and we do get a slightly rawer deal here than in the UK. However I find I do use some of the extra things now available with Sky as well such as remote record, on demand etc....

But then I also have a FTA box in the other room if I desperately need to watch BBC 3/4 in HD...

    Not sure if that helps...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭englander

    Thank you for that.

    It certainly does help.

Got a few options to look into there.

Going to get onto Sky first and see if they can do anything but need a backup if they go ahead with cancellation.

It all depends, I have the half price offer and I've probably watched a movie every day so far. Haven't been to the pics much recently so have a lot of catching up to do. And if you have kids it's great.

have to admit tho sky movies is a long way from what it used to be back in the early 90s, it was essential in the household in the days before the internet and even showed films which were sometimes as new as what was in the video libraries and newer than anything you could buy in the shops at the time, all for just 10 pounds per month.

Stopped subscribing to sky movies nearly 8 years ago when it started all the multi movie channels showing older movies and more repeats along with huge subscription increase charges. Now I take a look at what's on there and half the listings are still films from when I subscribed back in the early to mid 90s! They are still showing 'Who framed Roger Rabbit'!!!

Imo you should not have to pay €15 extra for HD if you have the complete Sky package.

Sky can hike up the prices whenever they want and we cant do anything about it.

Theres no decent competition out there unless you live in a cable tv area served by UPC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,074 ✭✭✭✭Johnboy1951

They have to charge ye all extra to make up what they have lost from those who quit paying them ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,672 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

got a phone call on saturday offering 75% off for 9 months and told em no bbc3 4 hd or rte+1 and he said well think of all the other great channels. I then said yeah like channel4 hd chan5 SD and UTVHD i now how on my Freesat EPG. He had no answer for that and gave up.. when you have gone a few months without it you dont really miss it unless you are into the soccer.

My bill has gone up €22 since last year, €20 for BT Sport and this €2 increase. This is bollix. I'm going to keep the basic package just for the recording function and have ordered a certain box that will give me everything else for €30 a year.

Yes it does. The extra prem games were being shown on ESPN last season which was free to Irish customers. BT now has these games and it costs €20. Sky are upping their prices while reducing their content.

Buy a skybox f5s off amazon which is perfectly legal. Just google that box and you should get a nice 'gift'.

BT or ESPN have nothing to do with Sky directly though, and I'm pretty sure ESPN wasn't a freebie in UK with Sky Sports. Just here in Ireland.

Of course, you have to subscribe to Setanta to get the BT Sport channels here. In UK, you subscribe to BT Sport seperately, unless you've BT Broadband whereby it's free (for the time being).

Used to have Sky in my own home and the place I rented on the western side of the country. Missed 2 months payments after 15 years and they send a debt collector after me. Now have Freeview. Sky are dirt
