First PC build case problem

Hi guys got my parts today and started the build. Noticed the left panel (One without the window) on my case, the Zalman Z9 Plus wouldn't open while the other did without a problem. I continued on with the build anyway and I'm at the point now where I realise I need to open it to screw in my drives. Anyone have any idea what's wrong?

So you removed the thumb screws but it's jammed or something?

Yes, anywhere I can check to see if it's caught on something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 tipp2k12

Did you look on YouTube and see someone else opening the case? Just copy exactly how they did it and make sure you are doing it correctly. After you take off the thumb screws it should just slide off with a little force.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 Vade

Seen a few videos saying it was a bit stiff, if the cables inside are moving freely then they likely aren't caught on it, it's probably scary but try a little bit of force.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭Scirpt

I noticed the first panel which I opened successfully was a bit stiff and I had to use force but this other one is just not budging, put all my strength into it.

Is there any give in it at all? With the thumbscrews off the back can you tease it off a little, like raise it a bit? Might indicate if it's caught somewhere around the edge. Could also try use a torch and your phone to have a look inside the panel, see if anything looks odd.

Only at the back when I pull it to the left of me but not towards me like it's supposed to be opened.

    Hiya

thanks for the PM,, Yeh its a pain to get off, Nearly managed to remove my finger trying to get the side panel off,, Rest assured it does come off, as above Remove the thumb screws and with a fair bit of leverage it will come off

It should slide off the Main Body as all PC cases should (and the same as the windowed side) so dont pull it out to the side , it will Slide off

Make sure also you have the front panel off...

Let me know how you get on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,101 ✭✭✭brianblaze

I have the same case, came off easy enough. the front panel is a pain to get off if I recall. If you're stuck and near Dun Laoghaire/ Blackrock I'll come help!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭Scirpt

Got it off in the end by forcing it out with a screwdriver
    Pretty poorly built case.

Important thing is that you got it off. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭Scirpt

    Indeed :)

Have another question. Have everything connected bar the "AC 67" 9 pin cable from the case. Its exactly the same as the "HD Audio" cable. But there was only 1 slot in the mobo as far as I can see. Is this cable important? Can I get away with leaving it out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 Vade

They are essentially the same thing, go with the HD Audio and leave the other disconnected. Both are for your front panel audio connections, HD audio is just the newer one.

Alright thanks a lot for the help. Have it all done now besides a bit of cable management, which I'm not sure how I'll face. Just need an adapter for the power supply and I'll let you know how it goes :)

Yeah not a fan of that case. The 200r is the better builder option for similar price. Wait I should not be saying this you already bought it now. My bad

What kind of adapter? Also when I was doing my cable management I found a great deal on cable-ties and compressed air in Dealz.

Got mine in Argos, was only a few Euro, works fine!

As Vade Says, I only connected the HD Audio, and Have been fine..

Shame you don like the Case much, I had then Same problems as you, but really like the case,,

    :-)

The PSU wall plug is for an EU socket. I like the look of the case it was just awkward to build, but have that done now thankfully.

Come visit Cork and I have spare psu cables, pretty sure they breed along with network cables :p

Or steal one from an electric kettle.

Oh god im an idiot. I can just use my old PSU's cable :P

By the way what does compressed air do in regards to cable management?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 Vade

Nothing, just good for clearing out any dust or bits that may have settled during the build and if you're clipping cable ties sometimes you get little bits flaking off.

Alright thanks. Just booted it up there and all the fans spinning but nothing coming up on the screen. Any ideas?

New Graphics Card installed? or on motherboard one?

Do the Drives Spin up? Depending on the Motherboard you are using, Any POST beeps? Do lights come on, on the motherboard?

So many things could be the issue, just check everything,, you may need to remove the Case and unplug and check everything is
connected correctly,, Is the CPU fan spinning up?

I had to connect it to the motherboard since I only have the really old cable (DVI?) at the moment. All the important fans spin and the dvd drive works. Dont see any mobo lights or hear a beep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 509 ✭✭✭dark_jedi_ire

Only connect it to the Motherboard DVI/HDMI/VGA slot if you dont have a Main GPU (Graphics Card) installed as a dedicated Graphics card disable the on board mainboard graphics ability,.

    Is the CPU fan on?

Is the Monitor working ok? have you checked the Montior buttons to change the source of the input?

Right I'll Be getting a new monitor in a few days so I'll see then. Just happy everything spins at the moment :D I suppose I'll have to face cable management til then!

Anyone recommend an affordable HDMI monitor?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 878 ✭✭✭Luck100

Even with no monitor, you should still be able to see if mobo is alive. You have a status light or display on your mobo? If you don't hear beep or see lights than it's not posting.

The Reason Im asking about the CPU fan is to see if the Motherboard is getting power,

Could be a Lot of things going on, for me when I just made my gaming rig, and thanks to the guys here I never would have guessed I Messed up putting the CPU in on the Pins and bend some of them, which ment It PC wouldnt start,, (Motherboards and CPU connections changed a lot since build my last Rig years ago) but so many possible things could be an issue, But fingers crossed your grand, and its just something simples :-)

I just connected it to my tv via HDMI in the GPU there. Same thing. The CPU fan is on but there are no lights or beep.

Check all the connections from the psu to the mobo. There should be a big 24-pin connector and probably another a 2x4 power connector.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 509 ✭✭✭dark_jedi_ire

If it was me, I would disconnect and check everything, and check again, and

Try it with just RAM and CPU and FAN and see, modern motherboards usually now show some kind of Light on the board

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭Scirpt

The temperature measure at the front of the case isn't working either, this have anything to do with it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 509 ✭✭✭dark_jedi_ire

if you check the Case and the cables coming from the front, make sure they are all connected to the motherboard , also one of the cables
has a little ball on the End , that is the case temp sensor, Open the Front of the Case and make sure the cables are plugged into the front of the case also, As when you take off the front panel they are disconnected at first(ships that way) so you dont just wreak it when you first take the front panel off.

Ok reconnected everything and same result :/

Is the mother board is the ASRock Z77 Extreme4 ? Whats the CPU ?

Remove the graphic card, remove the cmos battery for 30 second, replace it and reboot with the vga connection. Post results

Did you try a different monitor? Is your graphic card working? Like are the fans on it spinning when you turn on the computer?

Yeah I did, every fan is spinning that's connected to the motherboard. I haven't connected 2 case fans just to save room to work with stuff like this, I don't think they matter though?

Is it okay to use a HDMI cable and not VGA?

Once the graphic card is removed and the cmos battery removed/re-set it should boot fine with the motherboard onboard hdmi connection, I find vga better for trouble shooting....but that's just me

I leave the GPU out and boot without it right?

Looking at your mobo on the ASRock site your ram isn't listed as compatible, that could be an issue.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,579 ✭✭✭Mr McBoatface

Yeah first remove power plug, then take out the gpu, remove/reset the cmos battery for 30 second.

Would that really stop the motherboard lights etc. to not work? If it's not compatible I thought it just wouldn't show in your BIOS when you first boot it or whatever.

That did the trick! Well I didn't bother removing the battery but booting it without the GPU worked fine, still didn't see any lights or anything. Does this just mean the GPU isn't compatible with my monitor?

Sorry for the delay, What bios version is on the motherboard ? http://www.asrock.com/support/index.asp?cat=FindBIOS. I'd say the gpu is fine but you'll need to read the motherboard manual and find what setting to put in the bios.

Usually you need to find the primary video/graphic output option in the bios and set it to the pci-e card. Make sure the graphic card in the recommend pci-e slot, and the power connector from the psu is in correctly.

Version P1.60-15B. In the BIOS I couldn't find any setting I needed to change regarding the GPU, and in the manual it just said to make sure it's in PCIE1 (which it is).

Page 61 of the manual here - ftp://europe.asrock.com/manual/Z77 Extreme4-M.pdf . The graphic options are under the advanced -> northbridge configuration menu you'll find the graphic options. Set it to pci-e first. Make sure the 6 or 8 pin power connection from the power supply is connected to the graphic card securely.

If that doesn't work you could try updating to the latest bios version 1.8 - http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Extreme4-M/?cat=Download&os=BIOS. Others here could advise on other options before you attempt a bios update.

You can brick a mobo if a flash is done wrong so make sure that is correct bios for motherboard and that you understand what to do (Read the - How to Update). Again make sure you know what you are doing before you attempt a bios update!! I'd use the Instant flash/usb key option on the bios menu.....but thats just me.

Outside of that there is not much more I can advise on

Yeah it's already set on PCI-E first.. I'll wait til I get the new monitor before I go doing anything extreme just in case it's a problem with my TV. Thanks for the help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭Scirpt

Okay guys have an update. Completed the BIOS update without a problem. Booted up perfectly and then when I connected the GPU, it didn't work

I also tried a different PCIE slot and this didn't change anything. Clueless now as to what to do...
