TV3 Soap Opera

Posted a few times about the possibility of a TV3 soap. With Coro St and Emmerdale going to UTV in 2015, a new Irish soap may appear on the channel.

It will be 2 nights a week and set in a Hospital or Garda Station or Fire Station from what I have read. Start either Sept 2014 or Jan 2015.

It will be interesting to see if TV3 take back EastEnders and also buy Home and Away and Neighbours, though no news of this.

I hope they get Neighbors and home and away because it would be interesting to see what RTE TWO would do to fill the gap.

Doubt that RTÉ would let Home and Away slip through their fingers. They've had it since day 1 and it's big ratings for them, so I can see them outbidding TV3 for it, which could mean having to let Neighbours slip through their fingers, but I reckon they try to keep both.
I can't imagine them giving up Eastenders very easily either.

Any more news on TV3 soap?

TBH I sometimes think TV3 do this to keep in the Newspapers.

    1. Coronation Street
    2. Emmerdale

Nah I reckon 4 is the norm for a lot of people.
When I was a kid Home and Away, Neighbours, Glenroe and Brookside were somewhat of an institution in my house, so I guess I got used to having 4 soaps on. Went through a few variations over the years, but currently I watch Emmerdale, Corrie, Hollyoaks and Fair City.

I haven't really watch a soap fully in the last 10 years. I might see either Ros Na Run or Fair City and occasionally Coro St they English ones have all kind of merged into one for me.

TV 3 have said they hope the series will have 2 eps a week or 100 eps per year in year one.

"Fire" is one of the shows in the running from One Productions.

Looks like it will air as Coro St and Emmerdale go in 2015.

They should try for a Sept launch.

Deal to be signed this week (or next) by TV3 and a production company.

Are Lime productions still the front-runner? Or is it still up in the air as to which production company gets it?

Captain why did you demote yourself? Is the positive electrons (tries to be funny in a nerdy engineering kind of way, and fails!)

I didn't think there was any forerunner really. TBH.

I'm too positive to be CaptainNegative any longer - I was living a lie. I was gonna go for Admiral Awesome but thought that was a bit pompous, and Also Starring LeVar Burton was literally the coolest username I could imagine. :D

Maybe they weren't the forerunner, just anything I read about the project Lime Productions was always mentioned, so I made an assumption.

After reading about it I hope lime pictures get it because I watch Hollyoaks and think they do a good job there. Some people might not agree.

I completely agree - I've been hoping they'd get it for the exact same reasons. While I don't have a lot of faith in TV3, my faith in Lime could make up for that.
    Fingers crossed. :D

lol. I can see that - you've a fair dose of the negativity when the mood takes you. Wasn't it yourself who had somewhat of a vendetta against the Big Bang Theory a few years back (or am I mistaken)?

    Please don't. ;)

I'd absolutely piss myself laughing if the new soap was set in a comic book store or something. I can already imagine your posts.

It is not imply, TBBT goes to great lengths to retain all stereotypes. :D

You won't be saying that when the show ends up being set in a comic book store.

In all seriousness though, I think it'll be set in a police station like The Bill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Yeah it is the cheapest setting.

Fire Station - Too many pyrotechnics, not even the Chroma-key of the VB set could handle.
Hospital - Too much prosthetics, not even an Xposé cosmetic surgery product placement could handle
Farm - Too much manure, not even Mark Cagney could handel

    But seriously :)

    Likely settings,

Media Offices, University, Police Station, School, Mechanics, Team Sports.

Not sure how interesting a show about mechanics would be, but I could see the rest being interesting.

Team Sports - the next Dream Team perhaps?

why not set it in a small village like other soaps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

why not set it in a small village like other soaps?

Because it's on TV3 and people will wonder what it has to offer that other soaps don't already give us.
It actually won't add anything extra, but by setting it somewhere slightly out of the norm for a soap opera, people will be more likely to have a look.

I reckon they will go for a young persons soap in the same mode as Hollyoaks. Hopefully without the weekly deaths though :) and OTT storylines

TV3 used to air Hollyoaks for awhile didn't they? Back in the day?
I wonder if they might try to aquire it again and pair it up with the new soap.
I'm assuming they dropped it because they couldn't afford Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and Corrie

They were a few weeks behind Channel 4, I think they might have kept it if it had been simulcast, but then E4 airs the following ep after C4. They replaced it with The Royal AFAIR.

RTÉ have the rights to Eastenders secure so far. http://cce.gno.ie/news/2014/02FEB/27rtebbc.php

Element Pictures and Company Pictures are to produce the new soap.

Company Pictures are known for E4's Skins
Element Pictures are known for RTÉ's Bachelor's Walk and Pure Mule

TV3 have sent a letter of intent to the company's, Corinne Hollingworth advised on the commission (EastEnders producer).

Cost between €5m and €10m, 104 episodes to be produced, with them broadcast twice a week. Starts early 2015.

Pity they don't try for Sept to allow audience to watch them between Coronation Street Monday and Friday Nights, until it goes to UTV in Jan 2015.

Is there any idea of where it will be set. What times can they put it on? Most time are filled with other soaps. Wednesday 8.30, I cannot see any other times unless they put it on at the same time as Ros na Rún.

I really hope that it won't be a young persons soap. I think it should be a soap for all ages to watch. I would like to see it set in a small to medium sized town, but close to a big city, eg, set in an hotel, an Irish version of Crossroads. Something similar to Glenroe, with the hotel at one end of the town, and a farm at the other end.

They could always put it on monad and Friday at 8 with a repeat on 3e at 9

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 491 ✭✭EdmondShiels3

They should start it while they have corrie because I don't watch much on TV3 apart from that. I think they could put it on wed/thur 8:30 because no other soap is on apart from Ros na Rún which I don't think many watch. They could repeat it at 10 or 10:30 on 3e like bbc3 do with Eastenders.

I don't think they should stack up against a similar Irish show TBH. Sunday and Wednesday at 8:30? Sunday to get the XFactor Audience.

They could put the soap on Wednesday at 8:30 and Sunday at 7:00 it would not be on at another soaps time. If they are stupid enough to put it up against a big program or soap they have no chance.
