Thanks for the heads up, looking for some myself.

I never buy Aldi or Lidl stuff but this range looks good. Brand snob.

The bibs have Coolmax pads, the jackets look like they're tight & fitted. Not your usual Aldi / Lidl gear.

Lidl baselayers are always good. The material doesn't feel as nice between your fingers as the expensive option, but they're still comfortable and do the job fine. I imagine Aldi's will be similar.

Local Aldi has a bunch of stock leftover from their last cycling offer. Some of it half price like cycling jackets, leg & arm warmers. Few other odds & ends there like water bottles.

Thanks for the heads up. Need to buy bib tights at the moment and will check these out later in the week. I have bought some Aldi / Lidl items before and notice that their sizing is rather unpredictable. I wonder if anyone has any experience of buying bib shorts from the Prendas website?

Prendas sell good gear and excellent to deal with.

I bought two pairs of bib shorts in Feb and they were v good quality. Nalini.
I'm 5 11 with relatively short legs in relation to my torso and found the large snug.

+1 Prendas are great to deal with. I also agree regarding snug sizing - order a size above your normal.

I think the promo video for the Aldi stuff might belong on the Party Bus.

Could do with some new tights myself.

I find the Aldi and Lidl stuff good for commuting. They're warm and robust enough for 45-60 minutes of riding, and it means that you're not wearing your good gear out.

Thank you for your advice. Do you suggest ordering a size +1 on the manufacturer's guide sizing chart, in this instance, Santini? Unfortunately, I do not have any experience of bibtights and am not sure which of the following are the critical measurement areas for comfort and fit: waist;inseam;height and chest? Thanks again for your help.

There looks to be some great prices on the Prendas site, but what's the deal with quality on the Santini stuff, I'm assuming that the £19.95 Bib tights aren't the ones to get you through the winter?

Santini are ridiculously small. I suggest buying your first set from the shop, then once you have the size label to refer to, make future purchases online.

For bib shorts/tights, I often find that even if the fit is fine in the leg, the straps to the shoulder are tight to the point where I cannot stand upright and I have to go a size up.

I'm not sure what exactly you are looking at, but sometimes there are bargains in Prendas stuff limited by size as they close out lines, so price is not indicative of quality there.

    From the Prendas site

"Whilst many of our competitors still quote waist sizes, this dimension actually has no relevance when it comes to bib short sizing. This part of the garment will stretch almost indefinitely.

Your height and weight are the two most important dimensions. The size chart below gives you an indication, but exact sizes may vary depending on individual body shapes.

If you would like any further sizing advice we are here to help. Simply send us your height, weight, chest and waist (the final two dimensions will give us a feel for your overall build) and we will happily offer you some advice based on over twenty five years of working in the cycle clothing industry."

If you have no lbs which stocks Santini and allows you to try them yourself for size, then you can avail of their advice which certainly proved accurate for me.

Thanks for that advice No Pants - unfortunately, the local shops does not supply these. I am not a 'brand' slave by any stretch of the imagination, but think that the Santini 'Cult' bibtights are a good bargain @ €106.00. As I said earlier, I do not have any experience of these but, from reviews, they appear to be good bibtights? Same model available @ bobshop.de @ €5.00 cheaper, excluding p+p etc. I normally purchase cycling items from CRC but nothing available in that price range, ditto for Wiggle. Thanks again for advice.

I recently got the Santini 'Iro' TwistGel Intech Bibshorts SS12 from Prendas. I'm 5' 7", which makes me a M on their chart but weigh 78kgs (but I climb well for my weight!) which makes me a L! I went with the M and it's snug but fine.

Quality is decent but I haven't worn them enough to say for sure anything about their durability etc.

Bought the bib pants this morning. Seem nice and warm if a tiny bit big (long) in the leg for me with a decent pad in them.

How about the rest of the gear, did it look worth the cost?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 514 ✭✭✭lasair

Rest of the gear looked good! Be careful with the socks though last week I brought socks at half price for 1.49 and today they had the same at 4.49 and the others still half price ( in ballinasloe)

Bought the Aldi bibtights and just went for a spin in the freezing north wind.

    They're ok for the money.

Not the warmest and the fit isn't great.
I'm 5' 10" and 73kg and the smalls are baggy at the knees and crotch.

They also have a mesh bib which is not a great idea in tights imo. If the bib was made of the roubaix-esque material they would be warmer.

Seem well made but only time will tell as to durability.

Still-as I said- good value for 35 euros.
Saves wear and tear on your good gear.

If anyone got one. What are the jerseys aka shirts like in terms of quality and sizing i.e are say large more like an XL size

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,208 ✭✭✭HivemindXX

I usually go for XL unless I want something to be pretty tight. I got an XL shirt and it fit fine, a bit loose, like I expected. I think you would probably want to wear a base layer under it anyway.

Bought the jacket(more like a long sleeve jersey) in a medium and its very snug, might have got away with the large

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,396 ✭✭✭Frosty McSnowballs

I got the base layer top....a medium but a large would have been better.

I also got the trousers, padding is thin enough but they did the trick.

Got that too. It is snug but fits me better than the large. Seems very decent for the price.

I'm 5' 10" and 64kg and the medium is a bit baggy at the knees and crotch. There musn't be much of a difference between the sizes. I'll exchange for a small tomorrow and see how I get on.

I did 60k's today clad in nothing but the Aldi gear from yesterday. Despite the cold this morning I felt good and comfortable the whole spin. For the price I am happy and do not need to spend anymore to keep me toasty this winter. I had the jersey, jacket and bib tights on.

    Positives:

Do not feel yucky and sweaty at any time while riding like my other lidl/aldi gear
Regulated body temp well, did not over heat going up climbs and when the sun came out and warmed everything up
This is weird but I swear the bib tights helped with the peddling on the down stroke, like a spring assisting the straightening of my leg

    Neutral
Sweat wicking is ok but still very damp
The chamois is a vast improvement over the chaffing from other lidl/aldi gear but still has rough stitching which if I went for longer may have been a issue

    Negatives

Over 40kph the jacket leaked wind and cooled me down, lucky I do not breach 40 very often
    The pattern on the tights....YUK!
The stitching on the jacket is not as flexible as the material so each time I put it on or take it off I tear a stitch in the arm

I have only ever had lidl or aldi gear. What is the differnce between this and the brand names? Does it really justify the x10 price lifts.

For bibs/shorts....Yes, somewhat. I love santini shorts, the panels are cut well and the chamois is 1000% better and zero chaffing or rough spots and the material does not go out of shape as easy.

The items in this 'pro' range are pretty expensive for Aldi, a price difference of x10 is not really reasonable this time around. I have top of the range DHB winter bib tights which cost about €110. The Aldi tights do not really compare in my opinion. I'd gladly pay triple for DHB, they are warmer and fit a lot better (and this isn't a size issue, the Aldi ones are perfectly tight some places and saggy in others).

However I like the new 'jacket' just fine (it really is just a heavy jersey) it is nice and warm and fits great. I don't have a particularly expensive winter jersey to compare it to. I also have their previous long sleeve jersey and it's just as good, and I think it was a lot cheaper.

I have a ton of regular short sleeve jerseys and my cheap Lidl one is the one I wear 90% of the time. I doubt that the Lidl stuff is any nicer than the Aldi equivalent. The 'shirt' this time around is a slightly peculiar beast to my mind and it doesn't really compare with the other jerseys I have (meaning I would only wear it over a base layer).

I have a very nice merino wool base layer (actually it's hiking gear not cycling) and it does feel nicer than the Aldi base layer I bought yesterday. However it was five times the price and it is maybe 50% nicer so unless you are treating yourself the Aldi one is great value.

Surely they'll not take them back given that they're essentially underwear and you've worn them?

Medium jacket and upper base layer for me, but I changed the base layer for large today. Am impressed with the fit to be honest. Worth the extra cash. Rode for over 2 hours tonight in freezing cold and found both to be up to the job. Happy days. Good kit for small money.

They had them here in Celbridge for months, got the jacket for 12.99 but they were never reduced down to 6.99 here at all. They pulled them off the shop floor the other day completely though.

Same. They were doing the Winter top for 6.99 and the Jacket for 12.99.

Got myself a few of the tops as they were a bargain at that price.
The Jackets are quite warm and comfy too, handy for me as I had started wearing a hoodie under my rain jacket for my commute.

Worth noting that there is a bundle of the "new" & "good" "pro" cycling stuff in Aldi still. I have been popping in to see if they reduce the prices to shift it, as it has been since on sale since about the 21st November.
