Ive been doing a bit of shopping on tmart recently (this is the last post i swear!) My sister who is only 8 and has a mental disability and my dad thought it would be a good idea to get her a tablet for christmas. Not knowing if she would use it or not i decided to buy a cheap android one at first

I eventually chose this one for €38 odd euro
    http://www.tmart.com/7-Capacitive-Touch-Screen-Android-4.0-4GB-Tablet-PC-with-Camera-Wifi-TF-Black_p157005.html
Mainly because it is a capacitive touch screen, has android 4.0, has a front camera so I can skype her. Along with microsd slot its a bargain imho.
Reviews suggest the camera is 1.3mp not .3 as described so thats a bonus

Bad points:No bluetooth, its cheap and chineese, fashion concious of us may be embarassed to show it around.

Another bad point is the extra charges the postman will ask you for at the door. the customs will put their value on it not the 38 euro you pay & charge you on that .

Not everyone gets stung, plus most of the chineese firms put a low value on the item on the customs declaration, i havent been stung yet

    customs will grab that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,908 ✭✭✭zom

Yes - it was sold in that price almost year ago and there were like hundreds of them ordered and delivered to Ireland at same time - customs they got a little harvesting as they added 15 euro to be paid to each of them (if I remember correctly).

Had a similar tablet, with similar spec from China and it's like pulling teeth trying to do anything with it. Apps force closing more often than working, battery gone in under an hour, random shut downs, phantom screen touches, unresponsive screen. Dire.

Maybe the OP's choice will be better though.

Yeah like I said its for my sister she wont be doing anything intensive with it plus I always have PayPal if things go wrong :)

Really? I have the same one, and get at least a movie's worth of battery. I also use Skype, Netflix, Plex and Spotify with pretty good degree of success. I guess their QA is not all that great. Still, it was decent for the kiddies.

Go for it, highly doubt you'll get stung as they declare a very low value on the custom declaration

Guys customs dont grab and put some arbitrary price on something, they contact you and ask for payment details, usually forward on a paypal receipt...Even if they do get it, at this price....they will add fuk all

    C. Consignments of Negligible Value
Consignments not exceeding an intrinsic value of €150 may be imported from outside the EU without payment of Customs Duty. Intrinsic value is the value of the goods alone and does not include insurance and freight). Consignments not exceeding a total customs value of €22 may be imported without payment of VAT. (Customs value is the value of the goods plus insurance and freight (which includes postage costs (CIF value). However, there is no relief (from Customs Duty, Excise Duty, other duties or VAT) under this negligible value provision for importations of tobacco, tobacco products, alcohol products, perfumes or toilet waters irrespective of their value.

Where the Customs Duty on a consignment of goods amounts to less than €10 it will not be collected. Similarly, VAT liability amounting to less than or equal to €6 will not be collected. No similar rule applies in the case of Excise Duty which will always be collected on products liable to it.

    €38 x 0.23 = €8.74 VAT

    An post handling fee €6

    Total €52.74

Better off using amazon is there is not too much money in the difference. I would say that these days you're more likely to get caught by customs which will just annoy more as it's a further delay and expense. Amazon direct to Ireland or through parcel motel will be a lot quicker than ordering from China or Hong Kong. Dx.com can take over a month easily. And easier and quicker to return something through Amazon.

It does seem cheaper to buy one from the UK.

My young fellow has 1, uses for browsing and some games.....ticks along grand. As expected for price the battery isnt great but for games is grand. Also has Kindle app on it so greta because I just download the free books for him and buy a couple and uses it mostly for this.

For the money it is great, I got one and another guy who uses it for browsing and just PP app etc. After he bought there must have been about 10-12 people in office have bought for kids and no complaints so far......buying off Amazon protects you from a lot of the crap other people will put you through!

It does take a bit to get in so would recommend ordering now if want for Xmas.....think it took about 3 weeks to get mine but then again some people only took a week.....they are coming from China/?? so if not in stock when you order it takes longer but ships to company and then to you so not caught from Amazon

Thinking about getting one of these for my mother for xmas. I notice alot of you have only bought them for your kids , is it very basic? She would just be using it for regular browsing. How would it compare to the more expensive ones.

Pretty cheap and crappy, to be honest. I bought one as an alternative to getting a portable DVD player from LIDL to keep my daughter occupied on long journeys. I was under no illusion that it was a 'real tablet'.

If you don't want to spend huge amounts of money, I have the Samsung Galaxy 2, 7inch for less than 100 yoyos. You won't get any 'real' usage from a tablet that you get for less that this.

When you say real usage what do you mean? What makes this one more 'crappy' to the other more expensive ones.

A lot of brand snobbery tbh

@Blue Crystal... not really... the main differentiators for me are:

512MB RAM vs. a current industry 'low bar' of 1GB
Slow, single core CPU, vs a baseline of slow quadcore or dualcore
4GB storage, with nearly half going to the OS
    No bluetooth

Spending another 60 or 70 euros would get a dual-core CPU + 1GB RAM, 16GB storage and Bluetooth. In other words, a real tablet.

IMO its because the Chinese stuff is usually underpowered and its so crap it ends up under a table somewhere or in a drawer.

On the other side my older model Nexus 7 sees use every day and is a pleasure to use.

Ive had cheap chinese tablets in the past and they were a scourge, have a samsung and nexus now and they are great, Id keep an eye out for reduced to clear galaxy tab 2 or old nexus if I was personally looking for a cheap tab..but this would be grand for young kids

    Hi

    Trying to avoid the "cheap chinese tablets are crap" argument, what I can add in my expereince having owned a couple of Allwinners is;

    1. At this price don't expect miracles, poor battery life is a given (2 hours if you're lucky)
    2. The pysical screens are prone to severe scratching - no gorrilla glas here!
    3. Android 4.0 is a little old but perfectly fine for the basiscs (Youtube, playstore etc...)
    4. But.. if you need to do a hard reset, and there is no physical reset button you could be in for a world of hurt - many of the processors use a vol switch/power combo to drop into reset mode which can be very tricky and doesn't always work - and believe me it is very easy to get to a state where you need to reset (e.g. google Pattern Locked on a tablet and you'll see what I mean.) I would urge anyone getting one of these to immediately activate USB Debugging as soon as you get it to give you some chance of resetting it.

For the price they are fine entry level machines for folks who don't have a couple of hundred euros for a "decent" tablet that the kids will probab;y break anyway. That said, there are plenty of tablets in the €100 range in bricks and mortar stores now that would be a better option (e.g. versus 7" @ €99 various places)

And finally ... good luck with getting anything before Christmas from China, if this is from Santa better have a backup - regardless of the shipping promises, 3 weeks can be very optimistic

Well thats my 2 cents for what it worth!

    JP

I got a DS from Hong kong in 4 days I was shocked, hopefully Tmart will deliver before Christmas:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,799 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

The very cheap tablets are not worth it
I had an allwinner A-13 tablet that was 70 euros delivered from china
    The wifi kept dropping
    the battery was rubbish
the screen got really badly scratched
    the power button broke
the screen developed dead spots where your touches didn't register which made the tablet unusable

It lasted a month or two and now it's dead

I have just taken delivery of another chinese tablet
the AINOL AX1. it has the same quad core processer used in other tablets which retail at 3 times the price over here.

it has 3G built in and the 3g works really well. I just popped in my 3 payg all you can eat data sim card and it worked straight away with a good reception.
This would be really handy if you plan on using this tablet to keep the kids happy on long journeys in the car.
To get a 3g tablet here, you're looking at minimum 200 euros for a lower spec model

it cost 105 euros (or 135 if you get caught for customs (VAT)
This one has a quad core processer and 1 gb of ram
    Immediately it feels more solid
the screen is bright but the viewing angle is narrow and the tablet is impressively responsive

Avoid the very bottom of the tablet market, but if you get a recognised brand and don't go for the cheapest possible option, you should be able to get a decent tablet for a lot cheaper than the name brands over here.
