Anyone doing this next year? About 20 weeks to go so a good time to start.
Not sure whether to do the ultra or not. Only getting back into a routine. Going to just put down for the marathon and see how it goes for the next few months. Time will tell.
    €70 entry for any race.
Changes can be made up until 1st March.
Race date Sunday 6th April 2014.

Same again for me this year, getting through it last year gave me a much needed bit of confidence to face Comrades in June.

Any idea when this usually sells out? Would like to pick a half to aim for, but don't want to enter prematurely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭breffni blue

usually sells out early in January...

I'm a first timer for the ultra this year. Would like to hear opinions from previous ultra runners regarding nutrition during the race. What worked, what didn't. I realise food intake is quite an individual thing but I reckon now is a good time to start experimenting with different options.

I use gels and sports drink, same as for a marathon. Don't overcomplicate things. 39 miles are more a long marathon than a "real" ultra.

Signed up for this as my first half. Nervous but excited. Think training is going well did 12 miles yesterday, just gotta get some hill work into my training as I've heard it's a very tough course.

For me I mainly used it to save me carrying loads of gels,
So I dropped stuff at mile 13 (which I actually forgot about until I was half a mile past it), 26 which I was thankful for and 34.

Mine consisted of gels, a small amount of flat coke (mile 26) and some salty cracker type things.

I don't drink coffee and very rarely drink coke so it gave me a nice kick when i needed it. :)

I am doing the half as well. It will be my first. Only started running in August but enjoying it so far. Not part of a club.
Have done a 10k already and have signed up to do an 8k soon. Will probably do another 10k before the half.
Reading that it is a tough course so will probably need to get more hills into my running. Saying that a warm spell around April could make it a tough one.

Thanks TFB . Just gels and drink would be my first preference. Just concerned whether the stomach could take all those gels (7+?) so was looking at possible alternatives.

I normally wouldn't have anything other than gels/water in a marathon but added a couple of different power type bars in the Conn Ultra a couple of years back.... My stomach did not appreciate it. That said, it does take me a little longer than most to digest food.

The first couple of times I ran the Connemara Ultra I did try a few nutritional options that would have been more typical for ultra runners, but that generally backfired and using marathon-type gels or sports drinks just works for me. I guess the pace for 39 miles is still too fast for more solid food or protein drinks for me.

Last time I ran I had 4 gels and 3 bottles of whatever sorts drink I used, as far as I remember.

I mostly used gels and water too, but I did have other various things in my drop bags - a handful of pretzels, jelly beans, bottle of (unfizzed) coke and a half mars bar. Might depend on how long you estimate you will be out there. I used little if any of the items in my drop bag, but it gave me a boost thinking of what treats might be in the next bag! The taste of salt from pretzels (can be a little dry though) was a delightful feeling late on in the race after all the gels and lucozade sport earlier on.

(I have used all of those items in ultras and training previously so there were no digestive/ other surprises for me).

After the last couple of year's disasters, I've decided that my three drop off bags will contain the following

    Breakfast
    Lunch
    Dinner

    :o

Hi all, considering to enter this after Kildare cancellation...
I can see the course profile on the website: what's the gradient of those couple of mile long hill climbs? Any idea?

    thanks,
    Chris

I know you can't park near the start but can you be dropped off before the full marathon or are the roads closed early??

I wouldn't recommend it, you're far better off getting one of the many buses.

Getting to the start is very well organised bus wise, their really is no need to even attempt to drive.

Would the Connemarathon be seen as the hardest one in Ireland?

It wouldn't be the hardest. It's even all on road which helps getting. Through the hills.

For road marathons, Dingle is a tad harder in my opinion.
Off-road marathons are an entirely different altogether again.

Having said that, marathons are all hard and the difference between them is small. If you're fit enough to run one, you're fit enough to run any.

Hi Everyone, I was wondering if anyone could give me a real sense of how difficult the climbs/up hill sections are for this marathon? Infographics are not as good as real experience. For example would they be longer and steeper then say the two hills you encounter on the phoenix park half marathon? Would they be as hard/steep as the hills you encounter at the run the line events in the Dublin mountains? Any comments from experinced connemarathon runners would be greatly appreciated.

will there be a clock at the half way point?

will there be a clock at the half way point?

There is a timing mat at half-way on the outskirts of Leenane, but I can't for the life of me remember if there's also a clock. I think there is, but someone else might confirm.

No, I've never seen one. Why don't you bring your own watch?

No, I've never seen one. Why don't you bring your own watch?

Pretty sure there was a clock on half way point for marathon last year, it was beside the timing matt.
Regardless of which as you said its good idea to have your own watch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭breffni blue

I think there is 2 one at 13.1 and 26.2 when you run the ultra, so if yer running the marathon, Then YES there is one at half way.....

I must be blind then - I've never seen one! Even so, I'd still suggest bringing a watch!
