Valentia also moved back to 24 May. Still the first OWS but a couple of weeks later, this is a good move IMHO.

Number of NS races down from 22 to 16, I hear - 7 sprint, 7 olympic, 2 middle distance.

There a few of the smaller races missing that will pop up over the next couple of months I reckon. Happens like that every year.

Gah The Humbert Challenge is moved back to the 27th of July and the Shadowman a week later - there is no way I will be able to hold the wife off for holidays till after either of them

So its either Tri an Mhi or keep away from the desserts and wine and actually do some training on holiday this year and do the Lost Sheep the end of August.

The way I am going at the moment the later my season starts the better!

A round of applause to TI and race organizers for including a kids series in the calendar- weekend passes are much easier to come by if the kids can join in the fun! A series of 4 races catering for 8-15 year olds. (This might make for a tough descision; Valentia or Lough Cutra the next day?)

Some nice new "opportunities" here and well deserved and congrats to them and some its great to see some top notch races still in here but I am disappointed that some excellent races have not been included , Nenagh , Joey Hannon ,Lough Key , Loughrea ,Ballina , Rosses Point spring to mind.

Distribution makes the series a bit of a challenge for us out West .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 164 ✭✭Huff n Puff

It's probably for the best that they cut the amount of races in the National Series. Even though our own club race misses out it is still the right call and there are no hard feelings from us. Should make for a better quality entry field at each of those races and that has got to be applauded.

Great to see the Olympic distance national championships in Kilkee next year. Can't wait for that.
Great to see the Half Ironman distance national championships in Lost Sheep next year. Can't wait for that.

all n all pretty pleased with those lists.

Funny, I am thinking the same thing for the South-East!:D Reckon its a pretty fair spread around the country, yet again the midlands have things cushy.

Lough Cutra is open for early-bird (€53) entry now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,184 ✭✭✭El Director

I also welcome the reduction in the number of NS races. The spread ain't bad and there will always have to be races that will miss out, that's just the nature of the beast.

I was planning on building my season around the National Championship races. What I had been hoping for was:

    NC Sprint: Mullaghmore
    NC Olympic: HoTW
    NC Half: Kenmare or Humbert
    NC Aqua: Galway

So 3 out of 4 ain't bad at all! Glad Kenmare got the nod in the end because with them moving the bloody date for Humbert it means I cannot do it (wedding that day), I'm disappointed not to be able to do it but after a quick look at the course at Shaddowman which is the following week I will consider that. I am very familiar with the north and west part of the bike course.

The announcement of the calandar is something I always look forward to and it has excited me and has provides great motivation. I love planning the racing year :)

three triathlons in killaloe next year. Bloody hell. that'll keep me busy

i presume with HOTW and Lost Sheep being the NC it now means that two difficult to enter races now just got even harder?

first glance at that calendar would suggest a serious increase in the number of races from this year for me. Superb

Cut in number of NS races surely just makes NS races harder to get into. Are they trying to increase the standard in NS races? Less races = more competition for entry = the more competitive athletes will be quicker off the mark to enter?

NS icons are not showing on the list for me. Is that a chrome thing or did I break something?

Should pool sprints be in the National series with all the other options we have?
No offence but they are hardly real triathlons. You have to tap feet and hope the person ahead of you heeds the tap!

I imagine the reason is to start the season earlier, with a guaranteed swim. Agree with you though, tapping feet is no substitute for OW!

    yes.
    and they are real.
if people seed themselves correctly and you don't stupidly confuse being a faster swimmer than the person in front of you with the effect of drafting........

yet again the midlands have things cushy.

I don't think it's all that cushy for the midlanders.

9 National Championships races with only one in midlands (Para). The Cross Tri, Standard Tri, Aquathlon and both Childrens are in the west, with Sprint up north, Duathlon in east and Middle distance down south.

In National Series there are 4 of 16 races in the midlands. Thats not really an uneven spread.

Standard Distance - 3 in the West, 2 in the midlands (Athy and CK) and 1 in each of the east and north.

Sprint Distance - 2 in the midlands (TriAthlone and Two Provinces), 2 down south, 1 in each of the east, north and west

Middle Distance - 1 up north and 1 down south

The one race I was most looking forward to myself was the Middle Distance Championships and the only event I didn't want to host it was Lost Sheep. Just my luck. It's a great race and all but it's a long haul for me. I've travelled there before but really don't want to have to travel there again. Oh well.

The calender is fairly balanced but having no sprints after July is surprising.

There will be a few clubs out West annoyed this AM. The fact that TI award the marquee status of NS two non club races is confusing. I think TI will eventually move all the NS races to bigger status races nationwide. The criteria for selecting NS is so wide it means they can basically select who they want.

I don't really agree that Mullagmore should be on the calender as an NS race. It has every right to be a race on the calender. But the race is be organized by a sailing club for fundraising for the sailing club. Personally I think Triathlon Ireland should be supporting triathlon clubs who are trying to develop the sport and not really help out other sports.

Don't get me wrong its a very good course in an iconic venue/setting. However very averagely organised, drafting, transition crashes, crap prizes and a goddy bag and an hour of a wait for food afterwards. In other words being run to make as much money as possible for another sport.

If Mullagmore or any of these races are selected they should be made cough up a significant amount to help support TI objective. I mean a couple of grand as the I would expect they are not organising the races for the sake of Triathlon. I don't think their is a huge difference in registration costs between private/club.

If you look at the effort that Lough Key, Rosses Point or Loughrea went to last year in comparison to the Mullagmore event I would say those clubs will be disappointed.

Which two are you referring to? Mullaghmore and Athlone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 251 ✭✭P2C

Lough Cultra Castle series and Mullagmore.

In fairness the Athlone race has contributed massively to the development of the sport in Ireland with hosting international races, junior races, draft legal format and I am sure TI have received a lot of funding via one day licenses etc.

Lough Cultra getting NS status is surprising. Its a relatively new race. My understanding was you need to be running the event for 3 years. They had low numbers at last year and the previous years events. Early bird entry @ €53. Be interesting to see what the late bird gets caught for. Based on their uk pricing @ £80 after April entry for an Olympic race. Its an expensive sport.

My opinion and its always being the same. I will continue to support clubs and club races.

No Sprints after July! - get them in early.

Lost Sheep better for Mid Distance Champs as later in Year.

Reduction in Number of NS races - was this expected??. It will increase standard but will make difficult to get into races even more difficult with more people than ever trying to enter.

Pity to see Beast of East off the list. Thought that they may also include JH to get in an early season Pool Oly!

It'll be laptops at the ready on entry opening days!!

True, I have done this race in the past and have no problem with it at all - just assumed it was one of the non-club races that you were talking about. So that's 4 non club races then if you also include Athy?

    Athy
    Athlone
    Mallagmore
    Lough Cultra

AFAIK the issue hasn't been completely resolved, but progress has been made.

That was a good few weeks ago, so there may have been further progress. Listing a NS race and a NC race in the region, I would hope that TI are very confident that this issue will be put to bed long before any races are due to take place.

Now, as a Mod, I'm going to ask that this matter is left to TI, CI and everyone else involved to sort it out without starting a argumentative discussion on here about it. This has been the Boards.ie line on this all along both here and on the cycling forum. Thanks

Surprised that Lough Rea isn't on the list for NS, one of the most enjoyable races I done last year and my vote for race of the year after DCT. Other sprint I done was hook or by crook and for my money Lough Rea was a better race, I know Hook wasn't run in perfect circumstances but, in my opinion, was way behind Lough Rea.

Or that they haven't joined the dots and figured out that a NS and NC race won't be happening.

Anyways while I disagree with not discussing it (as I think we should be allowed to discuss something as important as this, or at least make people aware "don't target one of these races") I'll stop pointing out the elephant in the room.

    .

It is suprising to NS status going to races and organisation that are not putting anything back into clubs with coaching sessions, information eve's ,training opportunities ,promotion etc , lough Cultra is not partnering with any local Tri club based on their website , entry for 2014 to the Oly is £85 and £160 for half iron ....
MSC Tri a great club in Mullaghmore have to run their own Tri (Lakeside) in August as a fundraiser as the Mullagmore race is for the sailing club .
Curious as to whether the non club races have to provide Tech Officials to races as per TI clubs.

Looking at the calendar some big players are getting in on the Tri/Duathlon space with Delphi running a tri and duathlon . Fairplay to them if there is a market for it but it will push small clubs out as there are only so many competitors available and only limited local sponsorship available.

Great choice in races and most a worthty NS selection but it will be hard for a small club to survive and reinvest if we dont get numbers .
