Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Crikey, that's a very poor field for a European Tour event.

    But, it's Q school.

After day two all three Irish players are on the right side of the leaderboard as regards making the cut in two more days time. However, both Higgins and Phelan are on the cut mark and really need to post nice rounds to ensure they don't head home disappointed.

McGee is in the top 10 and is very impressive given that I think this is his first showing at final Q school qualifying.

Keeping the fingers crossed that all three continue to pick up birdies tomorrow. :)

Well, after day three it's mostly good news for the four Irish players involved.

Ruaidhri McGee, and Kevin Phelan are in T32 spot after digging in well. David Higgins is the right side of the cut mark but only just. He needs a solid day tomorrow.

Now, all we need is for young Dermot McElroy to pick up a few birdies tomorrow and not drop any shots and he too could be around for the last two days.

    Fingers crossed. :)

McGee and Higgins in on -2 which is currently the cut mark.

    Phelan safe on -5.

    A couple of questions:
    1. Is the cut 65 & ties?
    2. Everyone who makes the cut is guaranteed challenge tour at least right?

Lads - see the lad in last had an 88 day 3 and a 68 day 4.

Even the lad in last can shoot a 68.

    Jaysus Nick Dougherty T142.

Would have got them all except Vanscik - well done on that one

Cant believe Davies has missed out again. I thought he'd be a future Ryder with his touch on the greens.

So many good golfers and only a limited amount of cards. I know some moan about weak fields sometimes but in reality there is serious strength in dept in golf with the young lads coming through the whole time. Even being a +5 handicapper doesnt guarantee you will make it!

    Jaysus Nick Dougherty T142.

Nick has been in the doldrums for a while now. I remember working in a golf shop some years back and we got new Tommy Hillfiger clothing in and he was the face on the posters as the main Tommy golfer we put around the shop. How times have changed.

Still though he has a nice missus in Di, bet someone's going to say their going through a divorce or something to really kick the lad!

Wonder will any of the Irish lads make the top 25 to get a tour card. A lot can happen in the next two rounds but I reckon it's too much of an ask for Higgins and McGee while unlikely for Phelan... Optimism!

I see Markus Brier there aswell, he was always a very solid golfer and had a couple of wins in his time.

It is a tough job at that end of the business I don't doubt that but if you can get on tour and work hard, there are serious rewards to be reaped!

Ha ha ha...website error again !

Now, they have him down as Bogey, par, birdie....:pac:

What in the name of sweet Jebus is going on with the scoring system?

This one looked more like a system glitch, they had him with three 9's when no one else was on the course :pac:

To be fair the scoring is submitted by volunteers so must be hard to get that many volunteers around the course in the Tour school although I would gladly do it.

Surprised Sky hasn't arranged for television coverage of the finals. More stories and heartbreak from these 6 rounds than most other events all year.

They can get Geoff Shreeves in to do the post-round interviews after the big names miss the cut

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭Johnny_Fontane

Phelan one shot back of the top 25 going into the final round.

savage pressure. Best of luck to him. Mcgee/higgins not looking likely at this stage.

phelan makes nice early move, -3 through 4 and up to 17th

    Good man Kevin Phelan.

He's putting in a hell of a round. He's 3 under through 12 holes and is currently T14.

He needs to keep steady over the last 6 holes to make sure of his card.

Hopefully, he will keep his nerve. :)

Bogey on 13. Hopefully he takes advantage of upcoming par 5

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,648 ✭✭✭AGC

    Another bogey:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,336 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Any reason why he was one of the first to tee off today? (when he was in the Top 20 overnight)
He'll be in the clubhouse while most the field are still out there, I think he needs a couple of shots cushion when coming off 18..

  • Registered Users Posts: 40 waterfordal

Birdie on the 15th. Up to T20 now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,336 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

    Par 3, 4, 4 to finish...
    T20 on -9 with 4 others.
12 more lads on -8 but but with extra holes to play.

Hoping a level par finish will see him through.
5 off the 16 lads on -9 or -8 would have to get to -10 to see him miss out.

    Parred the 16th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,336 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Getting better for him now, 2 from above him have dropped down.
Still on -9 but T18th now.
Top 25 and tied get through

    serious cajónes!

    http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/qualifying/season=2013/tournamentid=2013995/leaderboard/index.html

First man in the house, and almost certainly with a European Tour card in his hand (barring any sporting disasters), is Irishman Kevin Phelan who just gave a shining example of the big things expected of this young pup by so many in the know. He's teetered on the brink for much of this final day, a real 'Will he / Won't he" scenario, but pleasingly so for everyone back on the Emerald Isle, he has finished up at ten under par thanks to a stunning birdie at the last. Faced with just a short iron to the green, he took dead aim knowing that nothing more than par would do, and he almost damn near holed it. A four footer for his birdie remained, and in she popped. Well played sir, well played indeed!

Delighted for Kevin Phelan and delighted that Ireland has a new golfing star coming on tour. Really have to feel for David Higgins who after that second place in Italy I really felt was going to keep his card. I guess though both he and Ruadhri McGee will have the consolidation of the Challenge Tour although their rankings will not be great starting the year.

I noticed earlier in the week aswell that Dermot McElroy will be considering turning pro even though he didn't get his card. They reckon ISM will sign him and get him invites to some events in the hope of making enough money to get into other events.

A great finish after the 2 bogies. Solid stuff not to lose it.

So happy for Kevin as long as nothing mad happens with the rest of the field.

Commiserations to David Higgins, Ruaidhri McGee and Dermot McElroy. You gave it a great go but you will get back there next season I'm sure.

Fantastic performance from Kevin Phelan. He appears to be the real deal.

    Very well done !

Delighted for the lad. Also nice for Waterford as it is a great golfing county.

Looking at it there - 6 rounds with that much pressure - it is a grueller of an event.

Hopefully we have a new lad with a big carrier ahead.

And Gavin Moynihan going the US college route.

14 rounds for Phelan as he came through all 3 stages.
Didn't have a shot to spare in the first 2 stages and was again on the mark playing the last hole of his 14th round. Great achievement!

    Just watched it on sky.

Nightmare of an event. Phelan played a great shot into last , to win card.

Lads who have been back 12 times - Ryder Cup player Ollie Wilson missing out to kids.

Hard life - as one lad said - "I'll be on tour, or back working in a bar".

The only thing is - it is only the start in a way - The European tour it is harder again. The courses are harder , other players are harder, making a cut every week is hard. The players around you are better again.

We are better off as amateurs, with a handicap :)

I would also guess that now the PGA Q school no longer provides a direct route to the PGA Tour (only the Web.com), there will be more and more Yanks coming to the European Q School.

Also am I right in saying that Phelan is the only European Walker cup player to make the grade???
I assume the best the US team could do would be to make the Web.com tour
