    Hi

I heard from my friend WIT will change Technological University with IT Carlow. Is it myth or ture? I really love my WIT life and my course(friends, lecturers and campus service etc.) If WIT will change, how college will operate their course? Some course will move Waterford to Carlow? Could anybody let me know how will be change?

    Thank you :D

If it does happen it won't be until at least 2015 I'd imagine. Only then the new first years will be discussed where courses will be so don't worry about it.

It's such a shítty idea though.

    1) The fact that this college could potentially have the word 'University' in it is laughable really. Parking, quality of some rooms etc is pathetic.

    2) Instead of being in the top ITs in Ireland we will be the worst University.

    3) Imagine going to London with a potential future employer seeing Waterford Technological University on your CV. They'd prob laugh at you.

Eliminating basic grammatical errors and bad spelling from course handouts (all courses) should be the Beecher's Brook for WIT.

epic fail, I think is the term

    May i add to this.

Some very poor course lecturers .
Course material that has nothing to do with the related Industry
Some facilities in need of upgrading

Yes, I have noticed that the quality of teaching by some of the lecturers is very bad. Saying that though there is some real gems that would do anything to help and are really good at their job.

I don't think it is near university status I dont think the facilities are up to scratch some of the computers take an hour to turn on nearly.

It is in the programme for government that WIT will become part of a technological university of the south east and this will hopefully be an improvement for the people who it serves. WIT is underfunded and its facilities overcrowded and the hope is that over time as a technological university that it will be properly funded by the state. At the moment, and very unfairly WIT students do not get the same resources per head that a university student gets and this is very visible in things like buildings, IT systems, library and research supports. The amazing thing is, that despite the disparity in funding WIT punches well above its weight- by many metrics if it was made a university today it would be one or two rankings ahead of the existing universities. This is a long term evolutionary change- so do not expect much to change overnight.

What is the story with new computers within the college though? Some of them are so old they must at least be ten years old. I have never been to a university but I am assuming Universities would have a lot better I.T. systems. It's not so bad once you have your own laptop but its a nightmare when the laptop is dying.

A university isn't a university because of it's its computers and wifi. All over Europe and the US, IT's are ranked higher than universities. There is nothing better about a university than an IT anywhere else except in Ireland where for some reason they are less funded. Only Irish people fetishise Universities.

If WIT is considered a good college, I would hate to see the bad ones.

The level of knowledge in subject areas that are being thought is disgraceful. There is lecturers teaching subjects where they are just reading slides and can't answer any questions. Then when it comes to assignments they take marks away for the sake of it.

I'm speaking about IT subjects, no idea if it's the same outside of that.

Yeah I think I might know what lecturers you are talking about, what course are you doing out if interest?

    Don't answer that, neilk32.

You don't need to know what course he's doing.

I went to wit back in the day, they've been on about this for ages, I don't think it will happen. Everybody wants to able to put down that they studied in a university and that it will make their CV look better as opposed to an IT, sure they may aswell turn every IT into a university while there at it.

I'm not quizzing him or arguing with him or anything, I just asked out of curiosity. Calm down and stop with the paranoia.

After a brief look through some of your past posts you seem to just like to argue, so I think I will just leave you alone and let you get your attention elsewhere.

Only people who seem to say WIT will be a Uni are people who dont go there.

Anyone who has actually seen the inner workings know it wont be anytime soon.

Yeah, I would be surprised if it became a University within the next ten years.

10 years isnt a long time. Recession is nearly 10 years now.

    Not gonna happen.

Yeah unfortunately it is very badly under funded, just go in and look at the computers in the Walton building. They must be about 10 years old at least :O

For all the bad things said it is a good place to come and learn, I would recommend it.

Age actually doesnt make the big difference. The problem is the Internet connection and sometimes Ram.

Doesnt help when 1000s download torrents etc on the college network. If they blocked Trackers they would boost the speeds instantly.

Ya this is essentially the problem with the internet there at the mo anyway, hence why it's so much better in the W building than others since there is hardly any computers in use there. Changes should be made into what can and can't be done but it's very tough to do.

Just block the trackers with Firewall. 99% of the problem sorted. Even through Pirateproxy or other proxies the trackers are the same.

i have studied in WIT, other ITs and Unis in Ireland. Obviously the facilities of UCD and Trinity are on another level but all in all, it aint far off the standard and is in general a very good college. Some investment wouldnt go astray in some new college buildings/facilities but by and large compares well.

Up in the library there other day, to plug a laptop in you need to slide out the desk to get at the plugs under it. Poor girl did at and yoke came straight down on her foot. Its the little things in there I dont get, why cant plugs and ethernet ports be on to of the desk, why cant we have working wifi the blankets the grounds and not have to switch when I move to a new building, really annoying.
The place needs alot more funding and some people who know what their doing before it will be a real uni of any description

The funding and it's allocation is something that needs fixing.

not surprised plugs are under desk, have them up top and they will be filled with chewing gum by some ignorant pig.
