ifs it the one im thinking of was just a matter of time and it will in some marts

I have no sympathy for any mart that is caught by the balls, it was only a matter of time. Posters on here signing this crowds praise and kissing their ass when its was always a smoke and mirrors operation they were running, which was a plain as day to see. It was even well alluded to on here that people were playing with fire dealing with them. They have finished allot of other prudent and decent guys who just couldnt compete with the crap that these were carrying on with price wise.

I have a fair idea of amounts in local marts and some may not come from it, unfortunately. Maybe the dealers that pay arent so bad after all. Its absolutely no loss to the industry if they arent seen again, as there isnt much good in a high price if the amount is never going to be paid over. Just doing a google and for the last 2 yrs turnover was 33m and profit was 200k per annum, fishy ah?

hope no one on here is caught

Take above what I said with a pinch of salt as it just really pisses me off when trying to buy cattle against bidders that in the end werent going to pay up. Its tough enough for the hard workers in the industry to try and keep the wheels turning, and not having people laughing at you as they can constantly take you out on price. The worrying piece in the article is the mention that they are believed to be gone for many millions of quid

They didn't get credit in a few of the marts that I got to in recent years. One mart that I have a bone of contention with is a big one for them though - I assume they owe the mart lots.

They were great for gettiing stuck into an animal that they liked and never letting go till they had it. Not much good though if they don't pay for it!

I was in Italy last week on a sort of farming holiday to see soome of the weinlings that we sold in the last 12 months. The guys below are not well spoken of among farmers/dealers over there.

Not good news. I was talking to a mart guy recently and he reackoned very little cattle being exported. Credit issues and the new rules re holding periods seriously impacting plus lack of funds in the.countries we export to.

its the price the isnt making it competitive at the moment to export and nothing else, even people calling for a live export to UK, price of store cattle in UK is cheaper than here.

It doesnt take Einstein to work out the business model for this failed exporter. use the word failed, very very loosely

It was claimed that they owed a lot of money to contractors, unreliable with animal supplies and inconsistent with prices.

The factories will be rubbing their hands now, 60,000 more sheep for them to divide between them.
There was several attempts to do live exports this year, none really worked, stock too dear they said, now we see they were telling it as it was.

I was in the mart recently with a BB heifer, the only one I had. When she was in the chute ready to go in, one of the dealers asked me if I had more like her at home. He said he'd give me €1000 for her. I asked him if he was exporting, said no, but knew a man that was. He told me if I didnt sell her, to come talk to him afterwards. Well, she was making only €850. I let her off at that. As I said to someone afterwards, you'd want your wits about ya at the mart. I wouldnt have sold her without letting her through the books at the mart anyway, but have a feeling that he would try and convivnce me to just take a cheque and forget about the mart.

marts wont allow such to happen and rightly so, its not a shop window they are operating, if you want to buy or sell in the yard before or after the ring they will have no problem but animal goes through the mart books and commission is the same as buying in the ring

The mart i deal in is the same ... i remember one day at the sheep sale i was loading up and a feela that buys lambs for a factory not far from me comes to it every month we"d say just to fill an order now hes no gangster be veryly straight but he dealt for 20 lambs outside and paid the farmer via cheque there and then no going through the books,,, mart manager rang him two days later and was asked never to stand foot in it again!!! (i heard it from his mouth )
now i dont no but maybe harsh?

and this fact also at the weanling sale last year i went in to pay for sheep i got that day and a known buyer for TLT came in and asked for 100 euro petty cash ... now i said to myself that evening how in the name of god will that crack last!!

Reading between the lines here I reckon bob has a point regarding the "failed" bit!

Still one less buyer at the ring can't be good for trade .

true enough and dont get me wrong there great when your selling but what good is if a mart closes over them?! but in many cases its the marts fault were im based,, tbh id give them 1 weeks credit there buy a load monday come back next monday and pay before you buy for the next load i know ya might say that wouldnt work but lads there were making money of the backs of marts and farmers we all could that if got a big loan starting out!!

80% of my weanlings were bought by this company and only for them i would not have lasted in suckling for as long,it comes at a time when milk was on my mind again and you will see leg waxs herd up for sale next year on the back of this news,i will go with the flow and take it in my stride.pity the marts who are caught by the :rolleyes:

What's the story behind it all, were they caught by a large feedlot failing in Europe or were they running a joke of a business, always chasing their tail with credit, digging a deeper and deeper hole for themselves?

think of one of the most famous Italian movies and what was their main problem always

And if your local mart folds because of their actions, does it not worry you. How many Irish farmers did they put out of business or stop them bidding in marts as they couldn't buy anything against them. personally I dont want to deal with people who pay no one or are crooks. Im far from whiter than white but I do my level best to pay everyone on time, and I expect everyone else to do likewise

Think is there room for someone new or is it just cheaper to source the cattle elsewhere at the minute ?
I presume the price will drop from irish factories as a result or will there be a market elswhere for these cattle that were being exported ?

Ah my poor auld neightbours :o.

One of the buyers for TLT was in Delvin Mart on Friday week and he bought nothing. Him and his black curles, walking around like lord muck. Auctioneer asked him was he here to buy or drink tae. Honestly think he bought **** all if anything in 5 hours, woops apart from his tea :D.

Im new to the mart scene, and althought i know the TLT lorries years as i was only 3 mile away from there yard i havent heard 1 good thing about them. NOT 1. Even his agri contractor left him 3 years ago. But these lads have alot of equine also.

Was talking to a fella on Ballinasloe Mart committee today. They stopped giving him credit well over a year ago so he stopped buying there. Looks like a smart more now although I know the manager took a bit of slack at the time for losing a "good" customer.

What happens to the lad that's owed by the mart? Are the mart required to be insured or hold a bond to cover for this kind of thing?

Co-op marts are covered by icos so you would get your money
Privalty owned Mart you could be in trouble if it's enough to sink the guy that owns it

Be very wary about naming marts here. Some farmers could be liable to switch marts if they are worried about getting a cheque at the end of the week....

You don't want to have to be held accountable for your gossip online about marts being owed mini fortunes:eek:

yip, very true - but half of the marts i deal with are out sizable amounts. How come the same trick is played over and over again and farmers keep falling for it.

Sweet talk and incorrectly drawn business plans with widely inaccurate figures and too much left in the hands of lady luck with finishing prices.

most marts are made up of farmers on the boards. Mart managers love going down on one knee for the next john wayne into town

But they don't have the say if it's a co-op mart, it has to be brought up and discussed with all/majority of the committee. At least, in theory, that's what they're supposed to do....
