more than likely resigned before he was convicted. He obviously would have been sacked otherwise

By being allowed to resign he may keep quiet about 'unusual' activity by the boys in blue.

According to the article "The GSOC said Jermyn is the fourth garda to go to prison following an investigation by the Ombudsman."

4 far too many considering their position in An Garda Siochána, abuse of position, abuse full-stop! Sick to the stomach with this organisation  Sorry to ever have any dealings with them in any capacity. Far too many on the negative side to trust them in full again.

like any other profession that gives individuals positions of great power or influence it will be abused and with that comes a very difficult challenge to not play along yourself as you'd be in a minority and ostricised for being an odd ball!

i wish i could counter your argument the whole force is damaged but in my mind i know it is due to my own past experiences. if they were worth their salt we'd be in a much better country with true justice being dealt out to those who deserve it and leave the rest of us alone. we the Irish people should be doing a lot more to force real change in this god forsaken country, for once and for all!!

he had sex with a 16 year old who in many countries could give and would give consent

So a Gardai gets done for having underage sex with a teenager... but that's not the key issue here for some. It's because in the op's opinion he thinks the person in question looks like a 'pedo' ...

So let me get this straight to those people, you took more of an issue to respond to the op's comments, than the subject matter at hand?

Wtf is wrong with you people?
Is it because he was a Gardai? and "no, no, cant have anyone slagging the gardai" - ffs! what if he was some skanger looking bloke. Would you have the same comments?

    ... answer is no.

If he drove hom over the border where the age or consent is 16 rather than 17 , would he still be a pedo?

I don't think many people understand the meaning of the word peadophile.

Should everyone brought to court be sacked from their job before they have been found guilty of a crime?

What happens if they'd sacked him then he was aquitted?

Apparently having sex with someone before 12 at night on the day before their 17th birthday qualifies you.

Just what age are we talking about tho?
I read the article and it just says teenage... I mean are we talking 16 here or 13?

The 9th paragraph says he was 16. He met him on a site for over 18s and told him he was 18 the first time theh met.

Ouch. How could he have known I guess.
I honestly thought we were talking 13 or something here. Doesn't make him a pedo upon hearing he was 16.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

predictable usual rabble rousing after hours response. This place has become a joke. He had sex with someone he met on a gay website, not knowing he was 16, believing him to be 18. Now, meeting him again knowing he was only 16, yes, that IS wrong, but really, hardly deserving of comments like:
    Fúcking bent bastárd.
Defilement of a child, ah sweet jesus!

It was wrong, he got sacked, but really, hardly a paedophile....someone even asked 'What age is the teenager'? It's explained EXTREMELY clearly in the article, if some people would bother to read it before frantically hammering out your frenzied response.

who said anything about being sacked before conviction? why was he allowed to resign after conviction ?

    pension?
    sympathetic superiors?

In all fairness to An Garda Síochána, there are good & bad in all facets of society...corruption is rife wherever there is power...

Not all Gardaí are corrupt, the majority of them are honest, decent citizens with a demanding job that most people wouldn't have the stones or the stomach for...

You can't tar a whole organization with the same brush because of a minority of bad apples.

You're wrong. Many Catholic priests tried to play the "hey, I'm not a paedophile, I'm an ephebophile" card and lost. There's no difference between a paedo and and ephebo when you're in general population.

I hope he gets his head kicked in in jail.

I'm an apathetic agnostic, bordering on atheist, with no love for religious dogma, I think it's fair to say :D

But...I have met Catholic priests in war zones that I served in, who were true heroes & humanitarians & once again, I have to say, you cannot tar a whole organization with same brush etc., etc.

For having consensual sex with a 16 year old, who told him he was 18 and who he met on an over 18's website?

Ok, the guy went back for more after he found out. But there's still a huge difference between what he did and someone who rapes a 5 year old girl.

Indeed there's good and bad people in all organisations, however when the organisation in question is willing to cover up crimes and use it's vast resources to facilitate criminals to commit some of the most horrific crimes imaginable and then help them avoid justice,I think it's safe to condem the organisation despite the presence of a few good men.

This Garda bought and plied a 16 old boy with drink first then sexually abused the boy in a graveyard.

The Garda knew the boy was 16 as he was called out to the HSE residential unit
on official Garda duties on at least four occasions.
The Garda targeted a boy in a residential unit for vulnerable children
before any contact on an 18's website.

A huge cover up by the Gardai and HSE trying to deflect the truth
and protect the overall image of the Gardai and HSE in this case.

    Shame on them!

You should provide proof if you are going to make libelous allegations.

if the child in question had been a girl there would be no one defending this ex garda.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 Corcaigh101

What proof would satisfy you? what I have wrote above are facts not "libelous allegations"
The Gardai including the Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan are well aware of where the initial contact was.
Ask them yourself and while your at it ask them why in April of this year was the charge
of attempting to pervert the course
of Justice dropped, only then did this Garda plead guilty to the two other offences.
State bodies are involved here, their overall image was paramount at any cost.

If certain charges were withdrawn for a guilty plea then just so you know this is done in a lot cases throughout the country. It is done so as to avoid a costly hearing requiring all witnesses to give evidence and to save court time. Those charges that are withdrawn are charges of less seriousness than others.

Also to say the Garda attended the centre 4 times and knew the child was a residence there, the Garda's legal team could not say he didn't knew he was underage unless there was solid proof that he did.

I cannot see how any less damage was done to AGS without your alleged information you have provided being brought up in court

The bloke made his own choices and now he gets to go to prison as an ex Garda and a sex offender. He is in disgrace.

If he makes it out of prison his life will be very different. Chances are he will emigrate within the eu very quickly.

One day he may well read this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 Corcaigh101

"Those charges that are withdrawn are charges of less seriousness than others"

The charge of attempting to pervert the course of Justice would have revealed the true character
of this Garda and the levels of lies and deception he resorted to cover up his tracks.

A costly hearing would have revealed the true failing of the HSE to provide an environment that was both safe and secure
for the vulnerable children in that HSE residential unit.

A costly hearing would have revealed the Gardai recorded times and days that
they called to this HSE residential unit, that's if they could find them?
Like the HIQA report on this HSE residential unit that has disappeared and never gone public?

Sure it never existed like a lot of the hidden unrevealed facts in this case as it's nobody's child.
    Justice? Yeah right!

There is none more blind than those who refuse to see
