    Hi folks,

Does any one know of a butchers which sells cheap chicken breasts that are still of a reasonably high quality in the Dublin 9 or Dublin City Centre areas (or anywhere around Drumcondra)? I usually get my chicken from either Tesco or Aldi, where the cost is roughly 1c per 1g (in Aldi it's 4 chicken breasts weighing 690g for €6.99, and in Tesco it's 4 breasts weighing about 820g for about €8.20). Is this decent value? I've heard of certain butchers selling 10 breasts for 10 euro, but what weight are they?

The one near me is 130-140g, even says it on the packs that I see they come out of, I have weighed to confirm and it is correct. This is in sallynoggin near the church, 10 for 10.

I find most 10 for 10 butchers are about that size. so 1.35kg for 10, which is €7.40 per kilo.

I get frozen ones in aldi now

If you fancy a trip out to Coolmine, Dublin 15, try Dublin Meat Company (pretty much beside Animal Barbell). They do 25 chicken fillets for E20 - and they are good size and good quality. Also do a protein package - can't remember exactly what is in it but something like chicken fillets, eggs, turkey breast, lean mince, etc. I buy and then freeze in smaller portions.

    Thanks, folks.

I see that the Dublin Meat Company delivers for €5, which isn't too bad. The protein pack seems like decent value. I might give it a shot.

the whole idea of super cheap chicken is kind of revolting to me. Would wonder where its coming from and added to that the nutrition profile of beef or lamb would be far superior to chicken (high in omega 6's)

I get 4.8kgs of chicken breasts here for 30euro. http://www.branaganmeats.com I've also used the Dub meat company in Blanch. I do take Transforms point about chicken going so cheap but then again how do we know where other chicken breasts come from. Moved house recently and popped into the local butchers and there was a similar protein special as the meat company. There was only the extra large breast left so he offered me a different deal. I asked to see them first and he took out a similar box that are sold in the dub meat company. Local butchers could be buying in bulk from these larger places and offering a similar deal at higher prices so we could potentially be eating the same chicken at different prices.

Those chicken farm videos floating round Facebook and YouTube would turn ya off chicken though.

these are almost certainly Dutch ones, which have been pumped full of water and whatever else.
they're quick to point out their whole chickens, breasts on the bone, etc. are from Coothill Meats in Co. Cavan, but when it comes to the regular skinless fillets, they sudden omit where they are from.
seen them for the exact same price in The Meat Outlet in Bloomfields Centre, Dun Laoghaire. they were Dutch and looked horrible.

I use Courtney Foods, they have a few outlets so hopefully one is near you: http://www.courtneyfoodservice.com/

They do 5 fillets for €5. I usually call into their Kimmage shop so can't comment on delivery times etc

Thanks for this. I finally bought a mini freezer for my tiny apartment and went to the Cookstown one. I have been dying to try these places but you really need a freezer! I got 10 chicken breasts, 1kg mince, 5 cod, 2kg rashers, 1kg gougons for 36 euro! I had intended to buy more but underestimated the size of the packets.
