Twin Towers Costume causes storm in UK

    http://www.independent.co.uk/student/news/students-apologise-for-entering-halloween-costume-competition-dressed-as-burning-twin-towers-8924321.html

Basically, two Uni students in Chester won £150 in a Hallowe'en costume competition by dressing up as the Twin Towers, complete with fireballs, falling debris, falling people etc. Bit of uproar about it... One of the girl's father was a pilot in the US at the time of the attacks (albeit not o0n any of the affected planes!)

It does beg the bigger question, when is it likely to be okay to joke about these things, or to not have a full week of the same documentaries over and over and over every year, or will it never be okay? The reason I ask is, we often hear jokes about other sensitive subjects and people don't bat an eyelid (some might).

South Park reckons 22.3 years before something is finally allowed to be funny.

The costumes looked awful. Must have been very poor competition involved if they won.

North is much better looking than south

Ignore them, they're just plane crazy.

Nothing wrong with that imo, would my opinion be different if I lost family in the tragedy? Probably,I would think it was in bad taste, but I don't believe they should be sanctioned for it either. Is there some official list for what can and can't be parodied?

Poor show, they're not even twins !!!

Anyway over reaction imho, just a couple of students painting cardboard boxes for cheapest costume. Just a step up from cutting eye holes in a bin bag and going as a ghost (although a black Kasper would draw the racist outcry too).

Being honest, the only thing I care about is if those two were wearing underwear underneath their costumes or not. I'm going to say they weren't, thoughts?

On another note, why do we import extra sorrow and sadness from the USA about 9/11. Considering there is bombs killing large amounts of people almost daily why does this get put on such a pedestal? There is actually more talk, be it on the radio, tv, newspaper ect. about this atrocity then about anything else. I'd prefer if we concentrated more on Omagh, the children the British Army murdered in the north and stuff that happened here within pretty much all of our lifetimes then about craziness that has minimal impact to our lives.

I know people who dressed up as the Twin Towers the next year.

Besides these girls are sooooo behind the times, didn't 9/11 happen, like 5 years ago or something?

The thing that annoys me is that the paper can put the picture and a terrible pun on their front page and its ok. How many people saw the costumes before and after the paper got involved?

Same thing when they put a picture of Britney knickerless in the paper saying she was a bad influence on kids. How many kids would know she had no underwear if the paparazzi werent lying on the pavement taking photos?

To be honest I really don't see anything wrong with it. Yes it was terribly sand and it shouldn't have happened but I think they were just having the craic. It's the same with the whole blackface thing, it's only offensive if people are intending to be offensive. People need to relax, it's just gone over board. I just can't imagine why anyone would care what tow young ones dressed up as for Halloween.

Also this just goes to show what a rag the sun is, of all the stories that are newsworthy this is the one they chose to put on their front page, rediculous, this shouldn't have even made the student paper.

Because for a lot of people (including a lot of media people), the real world = Ireland, USA, UK. The rest is foreign-land

Remember the time when the Two Towers Lord of the Rings film was released in 2002 and people wanted the title changed as it was insensitive.

I'm sure Tolkien was intent on trolling Americans in the 21st Century when he wrote the book.

Seriously, how does this make the news, anywhere?

Typical from the Sun *spit*. If its not immigrants, benefit cheats or Jihad, its a bit of student bashing. Gives their 'readers' something else to complain about.

Pretty rich coming from the same paper which printed pictures of football fans being crushed and claiming they urinated on police and robbed the dying. In no position to discuss bad taste.

There costumes didn't go down too well, their idea seems to have really crashed and burned

Reading that article I really couldn't care, it is about as interesting in hearing a guy in dublin dressed up as a zombie. Surely something happened anywhere that is more news worthy, guy got a new car? Someone on the dole went on holidays?

Theres my plan for next year. Must see if I can get a friend to be an icebrg.

Maybe something is only offensive and shouldn't be joked about while relatives of those involved are alive.

Haven't seen anything about in the news where I am. Not so sure about it being global.

Over here the inappropriate costume news stories were Trayvon Martin and KKK related.

I heard it was an inside-job and they are just actors hired to play the twin towers.

Meh. Americans will happily go to a bar and order an Irish Car Bomb or a Black and Tan.

I've seen a Titanic bouncy castle/inflatable slide type thing.

Anything Titanic themed now seems to be a bit of a larf, an excuse to get dressed up as victims/survivors and put on that godawful warbling from Celine Dion as background music. Costa Concordia captain cossie anyone?

What a shoddy, lazy piece of journalism. Someone from The Independent read an article from The Sun and then put it on their site. They couldn't even be bothered finding a photo of the girls and instead used a picture of the front page of The Sun.

As for the costumes, they were in poor taste but it was hardly newsworthy. The chances are that if The Sun hadn't reported this the families of the people that died would never have known about it.

The Independent is a tabloid in broadsheet format. Every bit as much of a rag as the Sun or the Sunday Sport.

The girls’ costumes, which were labelled North Tower and South Tower, featured planes hanging from the buildings amid explosions. They wore hats that were meant to look like smoke billowing out, apparently also showing people jumping to their deaths from upper floors, and all of it topped with miniature American flags.

    I laughed :pac:

Friends of mine in the actual year of the Lockerbie Bombing went as the Co-Pilot and Pilot of Pan Am 103 complete with torn and burnt uniforms.

It was a "Bad Taste" party...not surprising they won, the judges thought it the most bad taste they had seen for some time.

I know a girl who went to a fancy dress party at Halloween wearing a white dress with ketchup stains on it, black wig and sunglasses. When asked she said she was Jackie Kennedy in Dallas. That's 50 years ago

Jackie Kennedy didn't wear sunglasses and wore a pink dress.

    Your friend fails.

Who dresses up as that anyways. I mean, a few thousand people died. Isnt it out of taste?

And from another aspect those two had to of sat around thinking "what is the most shocking thing to go as?" .... and they chose that famous image of the burning buildings. It's total shock value. Which is sad.

But I don't get where the line between acceptable and out of taste/offensive is? ... if this is acceptable. then surely every costume would be acceptable.

So if a mother dressed her 6 year old daughter up in zombie make-up with a tshirt that said "Madeliene Macaan's dead body" - that would be acceptable too. Because a costume is a costume, right?
