I Told My Kids I Ate All Their Halloween Candy

Has anyone seen these youtube clips from the Jimmy Kimmel show?

Basically, for the last 3 years, Jimmy Kimmel (US tv presenter) has requested that parents pretend to their children that they ate all their Halloween candy, and record it to see the children's reactions. Parents then upload the clips to youtube, and the show picks the best clips to be broadcasted.

It has come under fire this year though, people are complaining that its exploiting the kids and its not fair to mess with their emotions. Others think its a fine example of how bratty modern children have become.

    What does AH think? :pac:

For reference, here is the 2012 edition, and the 2011 edition.

Good training for when the wife takes the house
    and half his wages.

I think people are idiots and shouldn't be so sensitive and learn to laugh at someone else's expense :P

The kids need to get used to it for when they're working and get their payslip. 'Daddy why are the government taking half of my wages?'

I'm looking forward to the 2050 edition of the Jimmy Kimmel show where the kids tell their parents they are sending them to the most horrid nursing home they can find.

These videos are absolute gold, I don't know how you could possibly watch them and not have a good chuckle. People will really find anything to get their knickers in a twist about.

I love the last three kids in the 2012 video. If I ever have kids, I hope they're like that. Must email the parents and get the recipe.

I watched it but didn't laugh. I don't find making children cry funny.

That's fecking brilliant! Some of those kids are wee brats though, some of the ones throwing the worst tantrums look older than the ones that are trying to hold it together. Love the little girl going "I spent two hours, walking around, getting candy..."

It;s true I'm evil I thought it was hilarious, I even cried a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,029 ✭✭✭SusieBlue

I thought it was pretty funny too, my heart melted for the ones who didn't get angry at the parents though :) Such sweet kids! Some of the reactions were hilarious even if they were really bratty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭looking_around

the over the top screaming reactions..meh, not funny, bratty.

The ones that just started crying, or looked shocked = funny.

The ones that didn't get angry... how many times have the parents actually ate all their kids sweets eh? :P
    __
I don't see whats there to get worked up about though. God, my mom has pulled far nastier pranks than that on me. :/
Think about it, the kids get all excited /happy again about their halloween plunder because it's actually not gone.
    It's just increasing their euphoria ;) ,........:P

    Adults teasing children on TV..

Not offended by it I'm the slightest but just think it's moron TV.

Provoke your kids into a tantrum or at least make them cry, then put it in the public domain for their public humiliation, where it stays forever, for the amusement of random strangers. And the kids are the ones who get judged.

    Yeah, hilarious.

This is like something the nazis might have done.

Unecessary psychological torture on children, why I don't know.

It's not funny it's a form of torture.

You should probably read up on the kinds of things the Nazis might have done.

Modern history would be a lot different if they had just spent their time making whimsical YouTube clips.

I can't believe parents pretending to eat their kids sweets for a joke is being compared to the genocide of millions of people.

    The mind boggles

I prefer the joke of when you get a baseball bat and smash all their toys in front of them chanting praise to satan, you finish off with a decapitation of all their teddies and a long burial in the mountains involving more satanic chanting. There really isn't enough satanic chanting done around children these days if you ask me.

    Halloween Candy ?

This is the 2nd 'Haloween Candy' thread within two weeks!

    Here's the 1st one > http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057073402

Since when did we start calling SWEETS "candy"

    We in Ireland/Britain trick or Treat for sweets/chocolate/nuts etc . . . .

    Candy is for the Americans.

    Rant over, and relax :D

It's the name of the flipping clip, which is american

Also I don't find it funny
The child is right, it's not very kind

What this is at core is finding amusement in causing a child deliberate distress. That's not a great thing to do. Its also not great to be teaching kids its OK to deliberately cause distress for amusement.

Growing up we knew to hide our sweets from my dad if we wanted to keep all of them. He has a bit of a track record of nibbling at anything delightful left on display somewhere. But he would never, ever have eaten our trick r treat haul (maybe dipped into... but it's mostly crap) or our easter eggs or anything like that.

    Ya know why?

    It's mean.

Imagine a 4 year old goes into school and the 5 year old in the seat next to him tells him that he took all the contents from their lunchbox and hid the box as well. Or took all their new colouring pencils, or crayons, or whatever else the kid gets delight from. Kid would be understandably upset and would consider it to be true. As adults we'd think the other kid was mean and that kind of behaviour is verging on (if not is) bullying.

But for an adult to do it? Sick.

For the adult to take pleasure in seeing their own child in distress that THEY have caused?

Ranting about Americanisation and the use of the word candy in place of sweets while also talking about "trick or treat"

Trick or treating is an Americanism too buddy!

You do know they PRETENDED to eat all the sweets yeah?
After freaking out the kids, it was all "just kidding you still have your sweets".
The kids aren't traumatised, most laughed and were back to all happy after finding out they still had their sweets.

Some kids these days must have such boring childhoods if they're being wrapped in cotton wool and pranks are off the menu.

Yeah I known that. I still think its very mean to deliberately upset a kid. Funny that. They're kids, no powers of rationalization. Sure, they look happy immediately afterwards, but I'm sure that some of them still stayed unhappy trying to figure out why their parents would do that to them.

"But daddy, if you didn't eat them why were you telling lies?"

"Mommy, why would you pretend to eat all my candy?"

Yeah, it won't lifelong traumatise them but its still mean and I still think its really odd to take pleasure out of being mean to your kid.

I love the kid that says good job dad and gives the thumbs up. Teaching your kids not to take themselves too seriously is a difficult job but someones got to do it.

Yeah I loved that kid! Seems like a quick and awesome way to find out if you're doing a good job as a parent to be honest.

Or maybe they know what pranks are, and understand it was just for fun?

Gosh, people do go to far in "oh won't you think of the children" . The children are fine.
I doubt they even try to rationalize it, just glad they still have their sweets.
In fact most of the parents told the kids why they did it.

You really are looking to hard to be offended by this. The kids aren't being harmed.
In fact, I think you can tell the best parents from the bunch too, (The kids that reacted by "it's ok..." ...and were forgiving).

Did your parents never play pranks on you?
Are you against April Fools day pranks too?

It's not permanent harm, it's ok to have a bit of fun at the expense of others, so long as its not hurtful.
And the fact is, the kids are fine.

Kids will find it funny when they grow older. It doesn't hurt them in the long run now.

    I think it's funny.

Some kids these days must have such boring childhoods if they're being wrapped in cotton wool and pranks are off the menu.
It's the filming of it for a TV show. And it really depends on the age of the child - if they were eight or nine maybe, but at four or five something like that is devastating.
It is funny to tell someone something that will piss them off or freak them out before telling the truth, but that kinda humour doesn't work on a small child - it upsets them too much. Not seeing anything funny there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,691 ✭✭✭michellie

I did this last year, recorded it, it was funny. She's 5 now and hid her sweets Halloween night so daddy couldn't eat them haha
