Just sold my car to pay the rent

As title says.. just sold my car to pay the rent. Pretty much everything I own is also up for sale to pay for other little luxuries, like food.

I work for a couple of different companies on zero hour contracts, or what used to be known as casual labour. I've gotten 3 days work in the last two months.

Anyone else think that things are getting worse? I feel a little like a serf in the old feudal system.. things have never been better for those who are in positions of power or wealth, and never, in modern society , been worse for the working man.

Am I right or am I wrong?

Pretty ****ty buzz, but at least your trying to get some work done. I suppose whether things are getting better is relative, for myself at the moment things are picking up, and as a country I'd say things are picking up, but someone could just as easily say the oppisite

Working 40 hours a week at an unpaid internship that I walk 3 miles to and from.

Sold a guitar last week for the same reason.

Couldn't buy lunch today and still have to pay my share of the esb.

    You're not alone chief! ;)

Before things got this bad you should have started claiming.
Its easier to get a few days labouring than it is to get casual retail work on zero hour contracts these days.

You're about as working now as the public sector. Dole, rent allowance? Until you can find something more suitable than zero hours.

Ah I guess I just felt like having a bit of a moan. It just seems to get tougher to get ahead.. the really ****ty thing is that it needed a little bit of work to pass the nct, work that I could do myself but I din't have 55 euro to put it back through the test.. I'd have got twice as much. Plus with this new tax rule I'm still going to have to pay the tax for the time it was off the road as I didn't get it declared off the road.

it's like déja vu, in this place we call home. i recall a certain minister for finance (r.i.p) telling us that we had turned the corner, back in........whenever. in the real world however, things continue on a downward spiral. whoever came up with the old adage that "time flies when you're having fun"!! the reverse seems to be happenin to me. since 2008, things have gotten progressively worse, but in a strange way, that time has flown. maybe i'm too busy being stressed out about financial matters to see the calendar fritting away, but where have the last five years gone......

I feel a little like a serf in the old feudal system..

I'd say you're in much better shape, what with improvements in health and diet and workers not being beaten and killed and all. That said, if you wanted to go a bit peasanty, growing vegetables and mending things is always handy.

    Society in what sense?

Well it seems to me that if you step back and look at things from a macro perspective, then society is slowly moving away from the ideals espoused over the last 100 years or so, of fairness and a modicum of equality..

i think there was some form of unspoken social contract where the wealthy maintained their status in general, in return for a somewhat fairer deal for those in the lower social echelons.

Now the bastards are giving up all pretense of fairness and grabbing as much as they can as fast as they can.. read somewhere recently that the richest 300 people in the world have as much wealth as the poorest 3 billion..

Have you investigated what support you might be eligible for from social welfare?

    If not, why not?

Moan away, it's a tough situation to be in, I know what it's like to have money being a constant worry and for things to be really tight. Things will get better, it just takes time. Plenty in the same boat as you and there will be for many years to come, it's just the way things are now, but that doesn't make it fair.

    No, you're absolutely right.

The financial sector has basically stripped away all the capital from people in countries like Ireland and we're now heading towards a neo-feudal system where more and more people will depend on the land in order to survive.

We see it happening in East European nations like Latvia and Poland.

The bankruptcy of Ireland was by design just like it's been in African, South American and Asian countries before.

The same people destroyed East Europe and Russia after the collapse of Soviet Union.

The financial sector is just full of criminals. In my opinion, they're largely narcissistic, lack empathy and reason.
Just sick in the fckin head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

This is exactly what the austerity agenda is about, zero hour contracts and citizenship rolled back to the status of indentured servant

and most people in Ireland think its a great idea, hopefully they'll get theirs in the end

I know how you feel OP. I know people can say it will get better but you need things to improve now not some way down the line. This country is gone to the dogs for a lot of people and they don't see it improving for a long time yet.

Sucks being broke OP. We had to do without the car for 6 months earlier this year, as it broke down and we just couldn't afford to repair it. When you're living hand to mouth, the necessities have to take priority.

Hope things improve for you soon. It can only really get better from here for you. Have a chat to your local SW office and see can they help you in the interim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,085 ✭✭✭meoklmrk91

Forgot to mention that if things get so bad you can't afford food, heating etc, contact SVP, they are there to help and you can alway volunteer or donate when you are back on your feet.

It might be time to get onto the SW as well 3 days work in 2 months is no good to you, you may be entitled to casual dole or something, but it's something you should def investigate if things have gotten this bad.

I know a guy who used to collect stuff that people were giving away for free. The likes of couches, beds and misc furniture. He then put them into a local auction house and used to make a fair bit of dosh.

Your right . Things not as tough for me but it does get to you . Got a job straight out of college , was in full time employment for 9 1/2 years and hung around for an involuntary redundancy back in '09 .
Took a kinda career break for 2 years & got bk into employment going from 1 **** , poorly paid job to the next . I'm down €500 a week from what I was on back then and am actually worse off now wages wise then been on the dole in my current part time job . But it has taught me some invaluable life lessons and my hope is things can only get better .
In an odd way I'm actually happier now but a better paying job would obviously improve things . Also I was thinking bout selling one of my guitars to buy something but I know I would regret it . Obviously not in the same position as you but I can definetly empathise ....

Ah **** it.. I just felt a little bit fed up in the immediate aftermath of selling the motor.. its a little sickening to sell something thats worth more just because you are stuck.. just got me thinking about how people get 'bet down' for want of a better way of putting it.

Just one of those things I guess, and I have to over ride the feeling of just wanting to lie down under it and put the head up and keep going..

As regards the comments from people saying to go to the SVp etc, I just feel that if it came to the point of needing to go to a charity to live I would have to opt of of the societal deal as it is no longer fair, and go and take what I need directly.

Go talk to people, you know more people than you think, get some cash in hand work. If you really want to work and do a good job, as in really put the effort in, you will be ok.

Making comments about his Internet is not really fair is it?

OP you know you can work a minimum hours and claim SW. Go down to your citizen advice office. Tell them your situation and see what they say. They can be pretty helpful.

And you're right it's not fair and it is wrong. Might be hard but try stay positive.

Fock the car it's meaningless in the grand scheme of thing. What ever you do, do not let it constantly get you down because that's when the shît could really hit the fan.

    Best of luck bro :)

For all you know OP could need the Internet for his work and even if he doesn't the Internet is fast becoming like electricity or running water, you may see it as a luxury but I personally don't. I mean you don't really need electricity do you? Not really? Still not something most people in the western world would even think about living without.
